Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Slept through nine snooze alarms this morning. Karina had set the alarm for nine-thirty but she had only come home at seven, so it was hard to wake her.. She had a website project to continue to work on. I spent most of the day in the studio; almost finished another painting. I still feel quite ambiguous and unresolved as to how to judge these new paintings.
Spent some time on the Internet; have been engaged in a dialogue with someone from Saint John on the here forum regarding the arts centre article. They really have a chip on their shoulder about the Halifax arts scene.
Andrew came down from Wolfville for the weekend. He and Courtney and Karina and I headed out to the Michael Fernandes opening at the AGNS. We arrived late and all the food and drink was gone. The place was still packed and bustling with activity; didn1t actually get a chance to see all the work. There were five video projections in the main space and something on a smaller monitor, as well as audio pieces scattered around the hallways, coatroom and elevator. I especially liked the pine coffin with the head and feet missing; you can look right through. It is definitely worth another look.
I had planned on going to the CKDU fundraiser at the Khyber we all ended up going to the Fireside afterwards for a drink. I wasn1t in a very good mood; I think it is because I am out of money. I hate being broke. Swintak was great fun though, she has a great sense of humour. So does Stacey, who kept us enthralled with her stories after she got off work. Her and Spencer had been on the wagon all month; today was their day to cut loose. By the time Karina and I headed home everybody had something to say about my growing facial hair.
Just disconnected the cable from the TV so I can send this email; Mohanad and Karina were watching the Simpsons. It was a re-run. Am going to bed.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Spent most of yesterday in the studio‹finished another painting. Listened to
the radio reports of the shuttle. It reminded me of the flashbulb memory I
had of hearing about the Challenger. I was living in Saskatoon at the time;
I watched it on the news with my mom. I remember that we were both really
upset. Yesterday I found myself feeling more angry that the news reports
kept saying that they had “lost” the shuttle (as opposed to concrete
language like the shuttle had broken up and was destroyed) and kept
mentioning terrorist attacks. Why was there no assurances that aliens were
not responsible? Or voodoo? Or bad karma? Or ghosts?
Went to to the Khyber in mid-afternoon to fix the Plexiglas sign box on the
exterior of the building; people keep shoving the Plexi in. There isn’t
anything ove value in it; somepeople just need to be pricks. Also wanted to
read over some Charitable status information bulletins, as we have received
good news: the Khyber is now a registered charity! Want to donate some
money? We can issue you a tax receipt. We can really start planning the Buy
the Building campaign, and start hitting up corporations like to help fund
projects and staff positions.
Met with Tania at Steve-O’s to talk about the adult diversion process. She
has to do 50 hours of community service before the end of March. She is
still not sure in what capacity she wants to participate in the Art and
Censorship symposium in March; maybe if she gives a presentation it could
count as her community service.
Came home, made supper and retreated to the studio for a few more hours. At
nine o’clock Karina and I drove Mohanad and his friend Eleanor to a party,
as they had already been drinking. We then took his little Festiva to Sobeys
and loaded up on groceries. Drove to Video Difference but they didn’t have
either of the two movie I felt like watching (the original Solaris or
Advertising rules). It felt somewhat liberating to leave a video store with
no video.
Worked on a card for Sally when we got home; she is having a birthday tea
party this afternoon. Both Karina and I are going. It starts at one; I had
better go and get ready. Karina is still in bed; we were up quite late last
night.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
The Bloomfield Centre has finally caught up to me regarding my studio back
rent. Chuck called me this morning about it. He is sending an invoice in the
mail; it is for close to one thousand dollars! Yikes. Maybe they will accept
monthly payments.
Sally’s birthday tea party was fun and relaxing yesterday. Drank lots and
lots of tea. She baked a vegetarian Shepherds Pie. Lots of treats. Played a
“Dictionary Game”. Walked home in the evening after the rain had
stopped‹sort of. We had taken a cab their earlier when it was pouring. Made
fish chowder for supper for the first time. Rebecca and Karina agreed it was
good.
Felt listless for the rest of the evening; didn’t feel like working in the
studio or reading, so settled for watching Spider-man on the computer.
Didn’t like it so much this time around. Too comic-bookish.
Am heading off to the Khyber to make some phone calls regarding the upcoming
meeting in Ottawa. Suppose I should also look into getting a ticket and
planning accommodations. Spencer said the Sanchez show is up and ready.
They drove in yesterday and installed their photographs last night. They are
staying at the Lord Nelson, so we won’t be having house guests this week. Am
also going to try some paper embossing techniques in preparation for my
class on Wednesday. Was supposed to meet Sarah for lunch but she called to
postpone; we will have coffee at the Bluenose later this afternoon instead.
There are three openings to attend this evening; the usual Anna openings,
plus Heather Anderson in the eyelevel windows and the Sanchez brothers at
the Khyber.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Woke up way to early this morning. Karina had lots of work to catch up on
and set the alarm for 6am. Spent most of the morning on the computer
planning out some of the meeting in Ottawa, and sending and checking email.
Spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon working on a painting, but
kept erasing my progress. I wasn’t happy with where things were going.
Kept trying to put thoughts of astronaut bodies out of my head. I am afraid
I may become obsessed with what the sound of a human leg or torso or skull
would sound like hitting the ground after hurtling out of a rocket sixty
kilometres up. What macabre fascination!
The openings went well last night. The Sanchez brothers‹who aren’t twins, by
the way‹showed up late and with multiple bottles of beer with them. They
were quite disgusted by our puritan liquor laws. Stayed at the Club until
almost midnight; Karina got drunk on Jagermeister. I tallied over a dozen
votes of approval for my new chopper-style moustache. Karina, however, does
not approve, and claims that her vote counts for double whatever total
approval votes I may acquire, so I think I am in a no-win situation. I am
hoping for an extended trial period to see if it will grow on her.
Went to the Khyber twice today. First, to return the digital camera, which I
had borrowed to document a few of the newer paintings. Unfortunately the
batteries were run down and I only managed to capture a few fleeting images..
That should be enough to circulate amongst a few people for impromptu crits..
I am really unsure about these works, though I do enjoy making them. Maybe
that’s all that should matter. Picked up a wider range of pencil crayons at
Loomis and Toles and they seemed to get me over the hurdle I had been facing with the current painting.
Had a nice supper with Karina, then headed back to the Khyber to help out
with the Sanchez brothers artist talk. There were lots of good questions and
audience participation; I don’t think the brothers expected such a tough
crowd. They seemed a little unsure of key elements in their work, notably
the difference, or lack of difference, between their “art” photography and
“commercial” photography.
Came back home and almost finished the current painting. Am going to have a
snack and maybe watch a brainless movie (Mohanad rented Rat Race earlier,
which I had never heard of and looks awful, yet features actors such as
Whoopie Goldberg and Kathy Bates. Must be cash flick for them).

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Was up early yesterday, and spent most of the morning in the studio.
Listened to Colin Powell’s report t the UN security council; sounded like a
lot of very circumstantial evidence. How come the news never plays telephone
conversations between Bush and Rumsfeld? Or shows us aerial images of the US
bomb and missile-making factories? Oh, right, because its OK for the US to
have lots of weapons of mass destruction so long as no one else does. Sorry,
I forgot.
Talk of warmongering aside, I headed out early in the afternoon to join the
student day of action but couldn’t find them. How hard can it be to find
hundreds of chanting protesters? They weren’t at Victoria Park when I
thought they were supposed to be, so I went to the Khyber and talked to
Spencer and Lucas about bills. Shortly the protest came down Barrington
Street and I joined in, though I didn’t see Karina anywhere.
Headed back home afterwards and prepared for my class. Karina called; she
had been busy at work on an assignment in the fashion department. A good
turnout for class tonight; eight students. I think I have realized why the
Dal students in the class are so consistent in their attendance: I think
they are drinking during the class. I could distinctly smell alcohol coming
from a so-called coke bottle. I find this somewhat disturbing as well as
amusing. No wonder they are so chatty. We worked on embossing techniques
tonight, Most everyone got right into it and some made some quite
extraordinary designs. I hope the colourless blender pens come in to Loomis
soon, though. The smell of oil of wintergreen is really getting to be too
much to handle.
Came home and watched TV; Mohanad had hooked up the cable. Powell looked
downright evil with his shiny slicked back wavy haircut. Went to bed early.
Am just now waiting for a phone call from NSCN to discuss cultural policy,
then Karina and I have our appointment with David. I think this will be our
last weekly appointment; the sense of emergency has passed.

dearv \\\\ Mr. Chrétien.
Sorry, am a bit drunk.
Had dinner with Sarah and Karina and then, later on, with Caroline (she was working late at the Anna). And it is a snowstorm outside.
I awoke mad at Karina this morning because she had not yet gone to bed. We had talked about this with David yesterday. She was up all night completing her website homework. I helped her with it for an hour or so and went to bed thinking it would only take her another half an hour. She gets too wrapped up in it.
Yesterday I had a crit with Rebecca and then we went to Value Village. The crit went well; she likes the new work. I didn’t find much at Value Village, just a T-shirt and a USA puzzle. After paying I found a Simply Accounting 8..5 handbook that I stole; Courtney and Rebecca were being bad influences on me.
Didn’t get any work done in the studio today. Was at the Khyber dealing with the Canada Council upcoming meeting. They needed confirmation from each individual centre about who was going to the meeting. Had to do payroll as well as some outstanding Club invoices. Got grumpy just from being there.
Went to the grocery store again tonight to get a few things for the dinner. Made a rice/veggie dish and a Tai salad and some fish. Sarah brought a couple bottles of wine and I bought one, then another later on. She was harder on me when it came down to a crit of the paintings but provided a good justification for the differences in style. Caroline came over after working a function at the Anna. It was fun having people over and being social. Mohanad drove them home after waking up to my snowballs outside the living room window; I was storing Caroline’s bike in the basement and needed the lights flicked on. They were going to just call a cab. Mohanad is so accommodating.
Am going to bed before I lose this buzz.
Rented Novocaine but will watch it some other time. Watched Super Troopers while high last night but it is an awful movie. The first ten minutes are actually OK and well-done but the rest is a pile of poo. Before going to bed am going to read from This magazine and a new student magazine Rebecca bought home.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Awoke with a bit of a foggy hangover yesterday. Lazed about for an hour watching Novocaine, then stopped it when Karina came downstairs, foggy and hungover. Made breakfast and then spent the day in the studio. Re-worked the Queen painting from the oil style to the acrylic. During the crit with Sarah we had come up with a justification for the two styles that work; oil paintings only of you alone, and the acrylic style for global statesman-like images. I’m not sure if the queen painting will work in this style, but am pushing ahead with it anyway. Time is running out; I’ll be back at work full time in three weeks. Have to get cracking on some of the oil paintings. I’ll leave the decisions about framing until March.
Didn’t do much in the evening. Attempted making fish cakes but my mashed potatoes were too gooey. They tasted OK. Had hoped we would be able to go the the play Copenhagen sometime this weekend but all the remaining shows are sold out. Watched Novocaine, which had its quirky moments but they were too few and the plot twists became dull and predictable. Read for a bit and went to bed.
Dreamed about work; that some yahoo performing in the Club was writing his bands name @ the Khyber in paint and marker all over downtown buildings. I freaked out on the guy in the Club and it felt good. Maybe the dream is telling me I need to express myself better. At least, that’s what I get from it. That, and I am already feeling anxious about going back to work full-time.

February 18, 2003
Dear Mr. Chrétien,
What a day. Came home from Sarah’s NSCAD Visitor’s Apartment party at 5:30am. Got a couple hours sleep and then it was off to the Khyber to meet the plumbers. Over half a dozen of them were in the building all day, replacing pieces of burst radiator pipes. Shana’s studio flooded and the water came through the ceiling and soaked the desk in the Heritage Trust office. I spent most of the day following the plumbers around with a mop. Also cleaned the front entrance of salt, mopped the downstairs hallway and shoveled the sidewalk. Was very hungover and not able to do much more.
I had been called into the Khyber in mid-afternoon because one of the 100 amp fuses blew again. Mohanad lent me his car and I drove to Canadian Tire to buy a couple. I was in the middle of a good groove in the studio, despite the cold. Almost finished that oil. Haven’t been back into the groove yet. Spent the rest of the day at the Khyber in my studio clothes and three-day stubble. Had a board meeting in the evening and downed a few scotch before heading to the party with Karina, Dana, Mohanad, Spencer and Peter. The party was a grand spectacle of drunken debauchery. We all drank and toked too much and ended up in people sandwiches on the bed. Necked with Tashia for a long time, but Karina didn’t seem to mind. When we finally left Karina and I tried to go on a NSCAD studio tour but the guards rightly wouldn’t let us in. I’ve never been turned away before. Came home and our water pipes were frozen again. I almost set the kitchen floor insulation on fire with the heat gun trying to unfreeze the pipes. Eventually went to the source and it worked.
Spencer and I had the shock and surprise of teaching fifteen minutes of the Khyber Kids class this afternoon. Val was late; she thought the class started at 4:30. Children can smell uncertainty, and having the class in the larger Ballroom Gallery gave them more freedom to move about and exercise their little loud lungs. Luckily Val arrived soon; I don’t know how much longer Spencer and I would have lasted. He was far more hungover than I.
Went to the openings at Anna tonight. Ryan Vessey (fart shit the best! I never knew it was he who caused such an uproar with that awful tag that appeared all over the college in 1999) had abstract paintings that were OK, there were nice ceramic dishes and also nice ceramic wall hangings with Harlequin Romance illustrated covers and the best show was in gallery 3; A huge set of steel teeth chomped down hard and loud whenever anyone neared it; molded cocks spurted green liquid (Kool-Aid?) into a plastic wading pool; and a brass cock on the wall (at cock-height) emitted draught beer to anyone who wanted a swallow—just get on your knees and signal when you’ve had enough. Oh, and he (Andrew something) also had an instructional video: How to draw cock and balls. Cock art at its best.
Came home and watched a couple hours of TV; Mohanad had hooked up the cable again. Dana had made a tasty cauliflower-potato-leek-ginger soup. Yummy.
Am going to type up the minutes from last nights meeting; email invitations to our upcoming birthdays party, and maybe have a bath. Or go straight to bed.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Was at the Khyber early again yesterday morning, this time to meet the
electrician. Of course, he didn’t come by until one o’clock in the
afternoon. No matter; it gave me lots of time to do a deep clean of the
floors in the turret and on the stairs and in the front hallway. I must have
changed the mop bucket water two dozen times. Helped Spencer take bring up
the Sanchez brothers’ crate and load it up with their prints. When the
electrician did arrive it only took him a few minutes to fix the outlet,
simply by removing it. There are four other outlets on that same shelf; the
Heritage trust office used to be a hair salon.
I did manage to get a couple hours work in the studio before heading off to
teach my class. Only two students showed up again. I hope the low turnout
was due to reading week, and not an indication of my lame teaching
abilities. I finished a small book for Karina for Valentines Day (belated).
Worked in the studio for a couple more hours when I got home.
Karina and I are about to leave for our weekly appointment with David. I am
meeting joel Plaskett’s dad at noon to discuss the Khyber’s role within
HRM’s Capital District; he is on some task force or committee. I also
realized this morning that T-4 slips need to be prepared by months end. Fun
stuff. Will probably spend a good portion of the afternoon working on the

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Karina and I had a good session with David yesterday. Surprisingly, Karina
brought up the debauched party, but in a good way. We discussed the
distinctions between situations that occur in an environment of openness and
those that are illicit. We also talked a lot about Sarah.
Yesterday was another long day at the Khyber. Karina and I split a cab from
Dal to downtown as our session ran over time (it had started late). I was
scheduled to meet Bill Plaskett at noon to discuss Capital District. He is a
very pleasant man; a bit of a close-talker, but that’s OK. We talked for
over an hour about the Khyber’s history, its role in downtown Halifax, and
whether a “Khyber 2” or “Khyber Annex” would be in the works when NSCAD’s
second campus opens in Dartmouth.
Karina met me at the Khyber when she finished work and we had lunch at the
Med. Spent the rest of the afternoon and early evening working on the
newsletter design. Dean made a very interesting cover but it was deemed a
little too burlesque. Tom Scott called and we got into an argument over his
turret rent arrears. We are going to try to resolve it this morning.
Grabbed some groceries last night and made some soup and hummus. Worked on
my letter for the newsletter late into the night. Didn’t get into the
studio. Am hoping to get the house into party mode before tonight.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Our party Friday night was a success. We managed to book a keg of beer from
Propeller Brewery late in the day. Mohanad drove me to pick it up. More
people came than expected; the house got all hot and smoky, but everyone
seemed to have a good time. The dancing didn’t really take off; Courtney’s
sampling and organ were too out of step with danceable beats. His “kissing
closet” got a bit of use, but not much. There seemed to be an air of
expectation, given that a lot of people had already heard about the Monday
party. I think Graham has been telling everybody he can. I think for the
next party to work best we’ll have to set a theme. Maybe we’ll hold it near
the Gala; a pre or post burlesque show.
Most people had left by 3am or so. The keg ran out earlier but there was
still beer in the fridge. Somehow Sarah ended up staying over with Karina
and I. We were all up until about 6am. Quite the experience! I think we all
had quite a bit of fun. We woke up early; could here Mohanad cleaning up.
What a guy! The house was quite messy and stinky and he had it all
practically back in shape by the time we got up. We went for breakfast at
Smitty’s at 11. It was an awful breakfast; boring and generic, but that
fast-food family-restaurant atmosphere is oddly enticing when fending off a
hangover. Or when one is still a tad drunk. After breakfast Sarah went home,
Karina went back to bed and I went to the Khyber. Had a really good talk
with Andrea about work and relationships and the advantages of threesomes
over orgies. Had hoped to get a considerable amount of work completed on the
newsletter but only did a bit. Was too foggy. Came home at 8:30pm and spent
the rest of the night watching dull movies.
The newsletter production deadline has been bumped to Monday. I am meeting Rebecca at the Khyber shortly to do some editing. Jacob is probably there already as well. I feel the newsletter is in desperate need of some rescuing. May go to Mount later on and check out the exhibitions. Will
probably spend all day at the Khyber tomorrow as there is still major work
to be done on the mailout and media releases. Jason should be in Halifax
shortly and will begin loading sand into the gallery. Also have to meet with
Shana’s electrician on Monday. The power went out on Friday; another 100 amp
fluse blew. More than blew; it practically burst into flames. The city wants
us to solve the problem ASAP. The best solution may be to put both her kilns
on a new and separate meter. Hopefully that won’t cost too much; neither
Shana nor the Khyber can really afford high electrician rates at this time.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Sorry I didn’t write the other night. I’ve been drinking at the Club the past couple days. Have been at work the past few days as well. So much for the last week of my sabbatical. Haven’t worked on a painting for days. No matter. Karina and I had a really nice night together on Sunday, Very erotic, very fun. We talked a lot, until late.
Monday I spent the morning trying to finish the newsletter. Bad post-script errors. Not working. Jason showed up near the end of day. We went for a bite to eat and a beer at the Bitter End. Had a gala sponsorship meeting at the Med with Dan and Larissa. She was high on orange pop, it was hilarious. Lucas and Stephan had their installation for 10 TVs open at the eyelevel; good, slick yet gritty work, fun and interactive and playful. Hope that now their work is finished they will clean up the KDMC; the place looks like a pigsty. Had a beer with Dan in the Club; it turned into five. Ended up sitting with Gordon and Spencer and Greg and some out-of-town artist. I only realized at the end of the night that it was Daniel Olsen. He had a show opening at Anna on Monday. I had been carrying around an invitation in my pocket for 2 weeks and still managed to forget to go. He and Gordon talked mostly about the relationships of their old friends and how none of the NSCAD faculty made art anymore.
Today was more newsletter hell. It is still not done. Lisa from Allegra even came up to the Khyber on her lunch break to try to help us write a decent PDF to no avail; our equipment is fucked. We have no font management. On top of that Jason brought a small propane tank into the gallery to heat his stew pot and it started leaking. I am now paranoid that the building will burn down sometime in the next two weeks. He had 4 yards of sand (dirt) delivered today; it was dumped in front of the building on the sidewalk. He shoveled it into the alley beside the building so it is not blocking the sidewalk.
Had lunch with Karina at the new Italian Gourmet on Hollis Street where Rebecca works. Went back to the Khyber and worked on posters and Gala stuff. Had a meeting in the Club tonight that went well; Heather is very good at keeping the committee organized. Stayed for a bit afterwards and drank more beer. Am starting to feel like an alcoholic again.
Am going to try to get up really really early tomorrow and get work done before the day gets too crazy.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Was up early and at the Khyber by nine this morning. Fought with the scanner
for almost an hour trying to re-san Lucie’s image for the newsletter. Jason

Heard about a fire on Gottingen street before having lunch with Spencer and

and made an emergency appointment to set up a Disaster Relief bank account
and Craig planned a Superfriendz benefit concert to happen in the Club on
Tuesday. Because we have still not mailed out the invitations and newsletter
we will be able to add this fund as well. The newsletter will be ready
tomorrow morning but there is lots of folding and stapling to do.
Having a fire strike so close to home is nerve-wracking. I am more paranoid now about Jason’s propane tank in the gallery.
Had to re-schedule my meeting with Ray as I will now be at the bank setting up this fund.
Had a dismal turnout for my class tonight; only 2. I don’t think I am going to need the makeup. I don’t think I am cut out for teaching; my heart isn’t in it. Maybe if the course was something more specific, something I was really interested in busying myself with. Something a little more theoretical. Came home, made a nice salad and had a brief nap on the couch after listening to Mohanad, Rebecca and Karina bicker about the understanding of consciousness.
Mohanad and I are clearing out some of the Khyber basement tomorrow morning. I am going to try to get up really early and plan for my meeting with Ray. Karina is going to be up all night working on her essay.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,
Mohanad and I took a load of junk to the dump today. He borrowed Lyndon’s
truck and we managed to fit almost everything that had been in the emergency
exit hallway. The dump didn’t take the paint cans that still had paint in
them, but we dropped those off at Dave’s Bottle Exchange on our way back
into town. I managed to spill paint down the side of the truck and
subsequently over the front of my jacket while trying to clean it up. We
drove by the site of the fire a couple times. It is a frozen, barren,
icycle-ridden pile of twisted rubble. Larissa’s house was demolished as
well.
We finally got the newsletter printed today. There were a few more glitches
and delays but the whole lot of them were finished by 3:30. Most of the days
work went into prepping the mailout. Spencer and I met with a Royal Bank
official today and set up a disaster relief fund. It was a bustle of
activity in the office in the late afternoon; lots and lots of folding and
stapling. Jason fed us all with his stew. He also helped fold and stuff
envelopes. Managed to get the whole mailout in the boxes before 5:20pm. It
is always down to the wire with us.
Tashia came by a few times. Oddly enough, the invitation and media release
for the exhibition she is in at Gallery 44 came in the mail today. We have a
few of her images on file at the Khyber and she may be able to use those in
the show, now that everything else she has is gone.
Spencer and I continued to assemble newsletters while Karina sat in for the
KDMC board meeting. Talked with Sally about the recent dance performance. It
is always an interesting conversation when discussing dance, especially when
trying to explain how I think about it.
Karina and I walked home and made supper. Drank a bit of wine. I am meeting
Ray tomorrow and have a fair bit of prep to do. I also want to try to get an
application for a Quebec-based residency off in the mail tomorrow. And T-4s
are still due tomorrow. I don’t think I am going to get everything done. I
fly out to Ottawa on Saturday; I still have to review the agenda items and
do a bit of research. Yikes.
