Since I haven’t checked email until today, I just found the Christmas E-card you sent. Thanks! I haven’t watched the video yet. Just in case you didn’t actually write it, I’ve included it below:

Sorry for my lame letter yesterday. I was preoccupied, watching Titanic on TV in French while trying to write you. I completely forgot to mention the New Years News: Rich asked Kate to marry her! They haven’t yet set a date but it will most likely be sometime in the summer, on the Peninsula. Also: her dad, as you obviously know, was appointed to the Senate! Good choice, John is a nice guy, not a hard-core conservative at all. They’re heading to Ottawa next week for Senator Frosh Week, as they call it. After all, a record-breaking 18 appointments in one day seems more like a party than a job of “sober second thought”. One of the other NBers appointed, Percy Mockler, was the former MLA who handed us and the Third Space gallery our first cheque for $10,000. I still have the group photo. Let me know if you want a copy.
I’m slowly, slowly getting ready for my first day back at work. I spoke to James this morning and apparently there was a flood in our office just before everyone went away on holidays. A water pipe broke on the floor above, setting off the sprinkler system and drenching a bunch of our files and my work computer. It seems this week will be dedicated to cleanups and re-organizations. And then there is the ever-present Bunker to contend with.
On top of all that, I have less than 2 weeks to make final preparations for my residency in Chicoutimi, and this weekend we’re heading to Mont Tremblant to meet Trevor and Tamara and do some skiing. I must admit, I think I prefer the beach to winter sports.

Do you ever have days when you just don’t want to get out of bed? I’m finding it hard to get out of bed and get to work these days. Maybe it is because we aren’t really working on a big project at DHC at the moment, or Project Cleanup and Organization just doesn’t have a very sexy ring to it.
Last night I went out to watch the Canadian Junior Hockey Championship with James, Simone, David and Iliana at a half-empty pub on St. Laurent. Even though the weather hasn’t been half-bad the city seems empty. Maybe everyone is still on vacation.

subject Bathurst anniversary memorial held; Coalition: le Québec et les autres Canadiens divisés
Dear Stephen,
Sorry I haven’t written in awhile. The last week was busy, with work and then with art openings all over the place. They started Thursday with an opening at Dazibao of the late Bas Jan Ader’s work (you know he disappeared in 1974 in a sailboat off the coast of California). I didn’t go to that show but met Claudine later at Clark for Mathieu Latulipe and Marc-Antoine Paneuf’s shows. Marc-Antoine had collected and displayed found advertisements, things from the public bulletin boards at grocery stores and the like, and Mathieu had made photos and maquettes of small things made big, or vice versa.
Friday I worked a half-day and then actually spent some time in the studio. I didn’t do anything while I was there, but at least I was there. Afterwards went to SKOL to help with the bar for the opening of Dominique Sirois’ sugar factory. The show is actually called “Factory cubique”, she made tons of larger-than-life sugar cubes, and skulls, and other geometric forms into an installation that seems part Mayan ruin, part rock-band aesthetic, part critic of over-consumption and part performace. I found the performance a tad too long and the sound hard on the ears, but maybe that was part of the point. In any case, it was a conversation piece for Caro, François, Clo and I afterwards at Nyks.
Saturday Sarah R. and Clo went x-country skiing on the mountain. I drove them, then had breakfast at Dusty’s before spending the whole day at SKOL reveiwing exhibition proposals. I have less than a week now before leaving for Chicoutimi and am less than halfway through. We’ll have the final selection meeting when I get back. It’s more work than I had bargained for, but I committed to it and besides, it’s fun to read through proposals from other artists.
Stopped at VOX for quite a bit as Kristen Horton was there for the opening of his Dr. Strangelove Dr. Strangelove, and exhibit of photos he made by staging every scene from the classic movie from random articles in his apartment. If you remember, he worked with us on the Sophie Calle install. Afterwards I dragged James and Simon to Oboro for the opening of Glen Lewis’ work called Cezanne’s Hands. We met up with some of James’ friends from Toronto at Salla Rosa for supper. We had planned to catch the United Steel Workers of Montréal with Sarah R. and Michael but ended up eating, drinking, talking and watching hockey (the Canadiens had a splendid third period against the Capitals, coming from behind a couple times and finally winning with a dramatic goal with 20 seconds to go!).
Today was a sleep-in day, and we were going to meet Trevor and Tamara in Mont Tremblant but their baggage was delayed, which sort of threw all the timing out of wack. They are downhill skiing and snowboarding, while we are x-country, so in the end we made plans to meet next week, before they fly back to NS. Clo and I went to see Revolutionary Road, which isn’t exactly the most romantic film for a young thirtysomething couple to see together, but still very well-made and acted, lots of food for thought. Almost makes me want to move to Paris, if only I didn’t find the accents so annoying. Maybe we’ll up and move somewhere else.
Tonight Clo made fabulous soufflés and we started a movie but then stumbled across another on TV, Rechercher Victor Pellerin, about a fictional painter who burns all his art and disappears without a trace in 1990. We recognized a bunch of the “actors” in the film, as everyone plays him or herself in this faux documentary. Very well done.
Are you prepared for the re-opening of Parliament? How is the budget coming along? I have to say I’m not too impressed with the announcement of the trucks being bought for the military, the ones with the ridiculous name: MilCOTS, which stands for Militarized Commercial Off-The-Shelf vehicles. Supposedly these over-sized trucks couldn’t be built by one of Canada’s struggling auto plants, so now a pile of money goes to Navistar Defence in the ‘States while you ponder bailouts for suffering industries. Good grief!

That sounds like quite an honour, to be the first on Obama’s visit list. Please don’t try to place so much emphasis on the oilsands: they are a dirty, disgusting and environmental disaster. Let’s just face the fact that we’re fast approaching Global Peak Oil and find some new solutions already!
I’ve spent the past couple nights getting all my Dear PM letters ready for printing. I now have 7 volumes up on the Lulu publishing site and will have 2008 ready by next week. Just working out a few design kinks and getting ISBNs established on older volumes. They’ve changed the site a bit since when I first uploaded. Being able to print the volumes through Lulu is handy for exhibitions or just to have books on hand, but what I would really like to do is publish a more condensed volume, edited down but including marginalia, doodles, drawings and images from some of the links I’ve sent you and Paul and Jean. Something that contains broader material than just my diary rants.
For instance, we’re recently received an email from Pierrette who is upset that we skipped out of our Hotel Lark laundry bill from our stay in Mexico City. See, it was her brother that booked the reservations for us and apparently the hotel contacted him after we flew the coop. Why would we do such a thing? Because the hotel tried to charge us 956,80 $ Pesos for two small bags of laundry! That’s almost equivalent to $100 or better yet, three nights accommodation there. Besides, we didn’t exactly skip out; we complained, and asked them to look into reducing the price to something more reasonable, but they never got back to us about it.
How much have you ever paid to have your laundry washed? Did it ever come to $50/load?

But manged to stay responsible, helped shut tdown the party, clean up a little, and gather a dozen of the tardiest and drunkest into a couple cabs headed to the banquese. Only James, Ryan and I made it, with soem minor crises ont he way. No matter. Sudffice to say am too tired and a little bit stilltipsy to write properly, will try to touch base later int he day. Today, but ater, with probably no work happening. A good party it was. Met Thomas’ baby (as yet unnamed).

I’m heading off to Chicoutimi. The Weather Network this morning had wind chill warnings that put the temperature at -39, but it has since revised to -25. Not too bad.
Had a nice visit with trev and tamara yesterday afternoon and evening, then a complete communication breakdown and couldn’t for the life of me find the Art Birthday party, which I thought was at Oboro but turned out to be at a random studio space on Van Horne. I arrived late, left early and we watched Rocky 2 at home. Had breakfast this morning with Clo and Sarah R at a fancy place on Bernard. Managed to cause a slow leak to the front right tire on the way by skidding through an intersection and tapping the curb. Found a garage to pump it up, and will have my battery pack in the car for the journey in case it keeps letting out air. Am just finishing up my packing and then will hit the road. Have you ever been to Chicoutimi? I hear that the road through Parc Jacques Cartier can be tricky. Wish me luck!
Have you ever heard of The Story of Stuff? There is a nifty, simplistic animation on the website at thestoryofstuff.com. You should check it out; could give you some ideas for kick-starting the economy by using or even inventing new paradigms. Our current way of life certainly isn’t very sustainable.

subject Harper et Ignatieff ont eu un tête-à-tête; Admitted to supplying killer with a gun and a ride

Je suis arrivé à Chicoutimi hier soir. La route etait difficile entre Trois Rivières et Québec grace a la neige, le vent et le froid. Mais l’acceuille que Pascale m’a donné etait chalerouse et generouse. On a vu la film Misery ensemble chez lui avec sa blonde Catherine, qui est enceinte. Après je suis allé me coucher dans l’apartment en haut. J’ai rencontré ma nouveau coloc se soir, après passer tout le journé au Lobe.
Le Lobe a celebré son quinzieme anniversaire en automne dernier. Il est situé dans un ancien école primaire, avec les ateliers et bureaus artistique. Ils ont en plus un super-bon atelier à ménusier, juste à coté de la galerie. J’ai commencé aujourd’hui avec les choses numerique. J’ai terminé l’année 2008 et mis en ligne les nouveaux révisions de toutes mes livres. Tu peux les trouver à “http://stores.lulu.com/dearpm”. J’ai essayer de les acheter moi même pour l’expo mais il y a une probleme avec ma carte ou la site Lulu et ce n’est marché pas.
Pour midi Jean-Marc a m’amené chez lui pour mangé. On a acheté les sandwhiches à un petit epicerie fine puis on a ecouté de la musique. À la fin de la journé Guillaume a m’offert une bierre puis avec ses amis me montrer un experiment du son sur un haut parleur. Il a peint un scene de Pac-Man sur un mur dans la galere puis je veux le garder pour faire un animation. Demain je vais commencer le video animation de mes lettres puis aussi commencer de faire le pâte.
Est-ce que tu vas assister au innauguration de Barack Obama demain? Je vais essayer de trouver un lieu pour le regarder au télévision. C’est un moment important, non? Plus que ton budget?

subject Stephen Harper félicite Barrack Obama; Charkaoui ‘meets’ sleeper agent profile: CSIS agent

Qu’est-ce que tu as pensé de l’investiture de Barrack Obama? Je l’ai vu un peu en ligne, sur CNN Live et Facebook, mais le connection n’etait pas bien. Mais j’ai regardé son discours avec Jean-Marc chez lui pendant dîner, et j’ai le trouver presque excéptionelle. Il parle dans un façon 180 degrées different que Monsieur Bush: avec intelligence. Ça semble que on est vraiment dans une nouveau ère. Penses-tu qu’il sera un vrai changement?
Après notre lunch on a vu le plus récent court-metrage de J-M, “Seeking Voivod”, un mockumentary mais super drôle et bien fait. Pendant le journé j’ai fait quel que commissions puis j’ai commencé l’animation. C’est un processus vraiment longue.
J-M as m’invité pour souper chez lui, un bon porc qu’il as cuit au four pendant l’après midi. Après j’ai revenu au Lobe, puis J-M et Guillame et les autres on fait quel ques scénes pour un faux bande-annonce, un histoire bizarre d’un prêtre qui imposer la religion dans un manière…special. Je vais faire le “voice-over” demain.
J’ai recommencé à fumer un peu. C’est ironique, parce-que à ce moment c’est le “semaine sans fumer au Québec”, et les gens se parlent sur la radio de leurs trucs pour quitter, le statistiques puis tout. Mais presque tout le monde que j’ai rencontré jusque’a maintenant, ils sont les fumeurs.
As-tu jamais fumer? Tabac, le pot, crack?

J’ai travaillé tout le jour sur mon video d’animation. La processus est plat puis la resultant sera probablement plat aussi. Mais c’est fait pas pour la télévision.
J-M a me conduit au l’imprimeur pour recuperer tout mes lettres, deux fois. Maintenant j”ai beaucoup de matérial pour faire la pâte puis les sculptures, puis un pinata de toi, il faut juste que je finisse l’osti video.
En plus, je pense que je vais faire un autre video d’animation sur le peinture que Guillame a fait sur le mur, dont le Pac-Man. Mais je vais utiliser toi comme Monsieur Pac-Man puis les fantôms seront Gilles Duceppe, Jack Layton puis Michael Ignatieff. J’ai imprimé leurs photos aujourd’hui chez Jean Coutu.
Pour lunch j’ai mangé encore chez J-M et lui aider avec le vocie-over pour son film. Ce soir j’ai mangé les restants en ecoutant le match de hockey au radio de les Canadiens contre les Devils. J’ai quitté Le Lobe quand le pointage etait 4-2. J’ai pas attendu le but dans le filet désert. Plus importe. Je me suis rentré à l’apartement, j’ai pris un bain/douche, puis j’ai regardé la fin des Les Invincibles avec Jessica, la chien puis le chat.
Il reste moins de cinq jours avant la rentrée parliamental. As-tu prêt?

J’ai fini presque la majorité des lettres pour l’animation aujourd’hui. Je me suis rendu vers 1,400 frames/lettres. Ce soir j’ai parlé beucoup avec Guilluame, qui a trouvé une bouteille de vin pendant qu’il a fait le menage dans l’entrepot. C’est genial ça!
J’ai lu aujourd’hui que ton administration a les troubles avec l’accès à l’information. Puis j’ai decidé de faire un enquete sur moi-même. Premier chose: decider quel institution pour chercher. C’est difficile! Il y en a beucoup, comme 2875039 Canada Limitée (Société canadienne des postes), ou Administration canadienne de la sûreté du transport aérien, Administration portuaire de Saint John, Agence canadienne d’évaluation environnementale, Agence canadienne de contrôle de la procréation assistée, Agence du revenu du Canada (je suis certain qu’il existe un dossier sur moi dedans!), Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, Bureau du directeur des lobbyistes, Centre national des Arts, Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire, Conseil canadien des normes, Défense nationale, Environnement Canada, Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation, Office des terres et des eaux de la vallée du Mackenzie, PSPIB Deep South Inc. (Office d’investissement des régimes de pensions du secteur public), etc.
Et celles-les representent jusque un petit partie, il y en a beucoup. Comment choisier? Dans ma cas, il n y en a pas de choix “government féderal” ou “bureau de premier ministre”. Mais je vais essayer, comme même,au moins un fois. Ça couter $5 chaque fois; je serais prudent avec mes choix.
Sais-tu quel que chose pas génial? Un déficit de $64-milliards pour les deux prochain anées! Il y a juste huit semains que tu a dit que il n’aurais pas des déficits! Connard! Menteur!

Finallement, j’ai fini le film d’animation. Maintenant j’ai une probleme avec le fichier. J’espère que Jean-Marc peut le fixer. Vendredi j’ai découvert le gros centre des achats Royaume en cherchant une nouvelle déchirure de papier, parce-que la mienne a brisé après cinq minutes du travail. Or, ce que j’ai pensé. Quand on est revenu avec la nouvelle appareil, celle que j’ai acheté à Bureau en Gros, l’ancienne function encore. Comme même, je vais probablement besoin d’avoir une autre déchirure; j’ai encore presque 4 mille feuilles à détruir!
Aujourd’hui j’ai pensé de faire du ski de fond, mais avec le facteur vent ça fassait -39! No merci. Parc contre j’ai commencé la pinata de toi. Sera une grande tête de trois pieds.
Ce soir je vais aller au Bunker, un parti du bar Transit, pour voir un spectacle de 3REG, qui est un mouvement de création sous constrainte, dont le faux-bande annonce de Jean-Marc sera un part. La collectif faissent aussi des oeuvres sonore, visuel et littéraire. Je vais te recontrer tout demain. Maintenant il faut que je manges puis rejoindre Patrice avant partir.
Vas-tu voir le match des étoiles ce soir?

subject Recours à la force: l’agence frontalière n’a pas atteint son objectif; Flaherty’s tumultuous tenure leads to historic budget

J’ai continué travailler aujourd’hui sur la pinata. J’ai fait deux couches. La ballon est encore gonflé. J’ai repeinturé le mur avec la bonne coloure entre le dessin de Pacman, en preparation pour le nouveau animation que je vais faire. Je vais le commencer demain, avec les vrais gobelets de tim Hortons pour le pac-gommes spéciales. Je pense que je vais imprimer quelques munchkins pour faire le pac-gommes normal. Puis je doit re-imprimer les photos à toi, plus grand. C’est mieux d’être grand pour bien voir sur le video.
Ce soir j’ai attendu le Match des étoiles sur la radio pendant que j’ai préparé un paté chinois. Quel bon match! C’etait un bon souvenir pour Alex Kovalev, puis tout et tous le partisans au Centre Bell. Mois, je trouve ça spécial d’attendre le sport au radio. C’est plus intime, plus direct.
As-tu prêt pour demain? Penses-tu que la coalition vas essayer de te rénverser encore?

subject Discours du Trône: priorité à la relance de l’économie

Bonne nouvelle année Chinois! C’est mon année, en plus: le boeuf. Il sera bon pour la carière puis l’amour. J’espère. Quel signe es-tu?
Finalement, après 50 jours de conjé, aujourd’hui a marqué la rentré parliamentaire. Penses-tu que touts les autres chefs d’opposition vas appuyer le discours du trône? Je pense que Jack et Gilles sont prêt de voter contré. La question qui tue est toujours: Qu’est-ce que Michael vas faire?
Moi, personnellement, je n’ai pas une grande probleme avec les deficits, si l’argent est bien utilisé. Mais jusque’a maintenant, on a reçu seulement les gros chifres; pas des détails.
J’ai parlé hier soir avec Claudine. Je m’ennuie d’elle. il faut que je fasse plus de recherche pour notre st. valentin. On veut passer le fin de semaine après le vernissage à un spa ou auberge pour relaxer ensemble, faire de ski, l’amour, massage, etc. As-tu les conseils?

subject Le chef du PLC tranchera ce matin; November paycheques up 2.7 per cent

J’avais trôp fatigué pour t’écrire hier soir. En plus, mon ordinateur avaient functioné super lentement. C’est la merde. Je pensais d’acheter un autre, mais ça coute cher.
Tu auras ajouté les fonds pour les artistes d’acheter les nouveau equipements. C’est quel que chose difficile à faire même avec les bourses. Si j’avais une bourse…
Ce matin j’etais dans le merde avec le propriétaire d’un usine à coté de chez Patrice. J’ai stationé ma voiture dans son terrain de stationement pour la nuit parce que quand je suis revenir hier soir la ville etait en train de faire un gros deneigément dans la rue. Ce matin je me suis revéillé tôp pour tenir ma voiture mais encore une fois j’etais trôp tard et il y avait un camion qui me bloqué. Les gens qui travaille la bas sont gentile mais le propriétaire etait faché et forcement me hurler.
J’ai fini trois couches sur le pinata, puis le premier tournage de l’animation Pacman. Aujourd’hui j’ai quelques commissions à faire. Je vais te laisser avec les morceaux de les lettres que j’ai reçu de Culture Montréal, Le Parti Vert, Michael Ignatieff (pas lui-même mais les Libérals en général), et le NPD.
On attend avec les droits croisé pour savoir qu’est-ce qu’il vas faire, Michael.

Comme Culture Montréal en a fait état dans sa plate-forme culturelle lors des dernières élections fédérales, investir dans le CAC, c’est permettre à la communauté artistique de consolider ses acquis, d’accélérer son développement et de maximiser ses retombées économiques et sociales – trois priorités dans un contexte de crise économique.

La crise économique a provoqué un stampede politique pour redresser l’économie et, comme à son habitude, le gouvernement conservateur se sert de la crise comme prétexte. Cette fois, il prévoit démolir les dispositions législatives en matière de protection de l’environnement. Le ministre des Transports John Baird a annoncé récemment que le plan de son gouvernement pour accélérer les investissements en infrastructure était contrecarré par des règlements vieux de cent ans. C’est le même homme qui, alors qu’il était ministre de l’Environnement, nous a donné un plan sur les changements climatiques conçu pour ne rien faire du tout sinon épater les médias.
Il faisait notamment référence à la Loi sur la protection des eaux navigables, une loi qui a permis au gouvernement fédéral d’assurer pendant plus d’un siècle la protection des lacs et des rivières. Cette dernière, combinée à la Loi canadienne sur l’évaluation environnementale (LCEE) et à la Loi canadienne sur la protection de l’environnement (LCPE), donne au gouvernement fédéral le droit et la responsabilité de préserver le patrimoine naturel du Canada. Mardi dernier, des groupes écologistes ont publié des informations selon lesquelles le gouvernement prévoyait donner un grand coup de massue dans la LCEE.
Ces dispositions environnementales ont été conçues pour que les projets d’infrastructure tiennent compte des impacts sur l’environnement avant le début de la construction. Elles jouent un rôle crucial dans la protection de la faune et de la qualité de l’air et de l’eau.
Trop souvent par le passé, nous avons relégué l’environnement au second plan dans notre précipitation, pour découvrir après coup que nous avions causé des torts irréparables à l’environnement.

Lors de ma tournée d’écoute sur l’économie, en janvier, et par le biais de milliers de courriels, vous m’avez fait part de vos conditions pour le prochain budget et je les ai communiquées à M. Harper. Je lui ai dit que, pour que son budget obtienne l’appui du Parti libéral, il devrait 1) protéger les Canadiens les plus vulnérables – ceux qui sont les plus durement frappés en ces temps difficiles, 2) protéger les emplois d’aujourd’hui dans toutes les régions du pays et 3) créer les emplois de demain, renforcer la compétitivité et la productivité du Canada sans imposer à nos enfants le fardeau d’un déficit et d’une dette trop lourde.
Plus tard dans la journée, quand le gouvernement dévoilera son budget, nous l’évaluerons afin de déterminer si il répond à ces conditions et si Stephen Harper prend au sérieux les défis économiques auxquels nous faisons face, après avoir failli à la tâche pendant si longtemps.
Afin de prendre la bonne décision pour le Canada, je prendrai le temps d’étudier le contenu du budget et je reviendrai avec la décision de notre Parti mercredi. En attendant, j’aimerais avoir votre avis : Faites-moi savoir si le budget répond à vos demandes.
