Dear Stephen,
Happy New Year! Do you have any resolutions for 2011? Go for a majority? Will you step down if you don’t get it? I have made only modest, general resolutions: eat well, exercise a bit more, maybe try to get a doctor or at least see one, pay off more of my debts, work on some art projects, etc. How did you ring in the new year? We stayed home, watched Infoman and the Bye Bye on radio Canada, in our pyjamas. Then we watched Knocked Up on CBC, so it turned into a late night for us. Good thing we had sex early!
Horoscope: “You may feel as if others aren’t noticing you today, and it’s doubly frustrating because you have something important to say. However, your current feeling of invisibility may be due to your lack of assertion. Push through your fears of rejection, even if it seems like no one appreciates your extra effort. Sometimes taking care of everyone else can leave you exhausted. Don’t rely on getting approval for your actions; just listen to your instincts and do what feels natural.”
Trouble is, I don’t really feel like I have anything important at all to say. I might have had some interesting thoughts to myself while walking with Rose this afternoon, but they have all since evaporated. I could be more assertive, but to what end?
I did a quick interview with HERE magazine yesterday about the East goes East show, and while it went well it only served to make me realize how little research I have done and how little I actually know when it comes to Orientalism. I had best do some reading.
We had Sarah, Colin and Melissa over for supper tonight. They – Melissa and Colin – are getting married in just over a month. I made black bean soup, which was hearty, filling and delicious. We drank Coronas and vodka-tonics with the Bison Grass vodka Sarah had brought us for Christmas.
And what did Samuel Pepys write about on New Years Day in 1668? “Brisband said that no man was known to lose the first time, the devil being too cunning to discourage a gamester; but I did refuse.”

Dear Stephen,
Was up early with Rose this morning, she ate a hearty breakfast of cream of wheat, some Rice Krispies, and she played with her new egg toys while I tackled the mounds of dirty dishes. When Clo was up we had breakfast and then went to the MAC. It was the first time I’ve seen a show there three times (Sobey and Jon Pylypchuck), which was great as this time I was able to spend more time with the work. It was nice to watch Cooper and Emily’s video all the way through, for example. The collection show curated around the theme/colour blue was surprisingly good – especially the blue void by James Turrel – though I found the show curated by Manon de Pauw was a little less dynamic somehow. We walked up St. Laurent looking for a restaurant for brunch but our first couple choices were closed, so we ended up at Bagel Etc., which was surprisingly tasty. Sarah and Femke met us there and then we walked to their place to hang out a bit. Rose and Femke get along famously, they can play together, side bu side or ignore one another. We took the bus home, I fed Rose supper, gave her a bath, bottle and brushed her teeth, then Clo read her a story and put her to bed. Now we have more dishes to do and some leftovers to heat up for supper.

Instead of rushing the looming transition, return to your checklist and go over the details one last time before blasting ahead.”

Dear Stephen,
Spent the day working on East goes East writing, media releases, schedules, emails, etc. Was informed by one of the artists that the Globe and Mail listed the event as a “must see” in 2011. I finally located my shredded paper Timbits and water bottles (they were tucked into a trunk), so I packed them up and mailed them off to the gallery for the exhibition. It opens on the 14th. I am trying to brush up on my Orientalism and Edward Said.
Not much else to report. Yesterday I spent the day with Rose as we were unaware that it was a carryover holiday for our garderie. I roasted a chicken, vegetables and potatoes in the oven. Rose ate really well but became constipated. She still is. I, on the other hand, have not been for awhile and seem more balanced. I am obsessed with the fibre content of foods lately. Last night we watched Being There. A great film, fantastic acting, but perhaps a tad long.
Horoscope: “Sensuous Venus aspects both of your key planets, Jupiter and Neptune, today, increasing your optimism while tempting you to escape into a fantasy world. Meanwhile, the dutiful Capricorn Solar Eclipse in your 11th House of Future Goals requires a cautious and conservative approach to all social and professional interactions. Fortunately, you are flexible enough to maintain your composure in the middle of this dynamic time.”
My escape today consisted of reading a Tintin adventure, L’Oreille Casée. It was terrible! The plot was completely ridiculous.
A great quote from Samuel Pepys from January 4, 1668: “I to the office again, where all the afternoon till late busy and then home with my mind pleased at the pleasure of despatching my business.”
Tomorrow, off to work.

Dear Stephen,
Horoscope: “You appear a bit less stable than you actually are these days with Jupiter, your traditional ruling planet, conjunct outrageous Uranus. But your unorthodox behavior may only be superficial because down deep you know that the rules and regulations of Saturn must be acknowledged and obeyed. Nevertheless, you must be careful now; if you inadvertently step over the line of acceptability, you’ll need to make amends quickly.”
This is odd, because for the past couple days I’ve been energetic, efficient and super-happy at work, and seem to be stable. Is this unorthodox? I normally usually work hard, but maybe with James away I feel more hands-on. He’s on vacation until this weekend.
I’ve had some feedback on some of my East goes East ideas, but one thing they changed was the date for the show of burnable art, pushing it back from the 14th to the 24th. The Monday night opening might seem odd but then again the location is odd, too: on a stage in the middle of Market Square, a kind of large indoor atrium-mall. The artist-talks and workshop will take place at the Library, in the same building, and the burning outside, so it is all coming together.
Samuel Pepys: “Anon comes in Mrs. Turner and brings with her Mrs. Hollworthy, which pleased me. And so to dancing again, with extraordinary great pleasure.”
I’m off to keep reading, almost finished At home, will continue Orientalism, maybe listen to the third period of the Habs-Pens match tonight. Currently tied at 1.
BTW, what do you think happened with Team Canada last night during the gold medal match against Russia? Did they start to celebrate a period early? I didn’t watch or listen, but it sounds like it was a spectacular implosion.

Dear Stephen,
Busy at work today. Eric and I started assembling the plinths for Things, which requires wiring the speaker and insetting the speaker after gluing the four sides together but before gluing on the top. We went for beers with Stacy at the Victoria Pub after work. I still have the van from work, I’ll return it tomorrow.
Booked our flights to and from Saint John. It will be fun to travel alone with Rose, and my parents are super-keen about watching her while I am working on East goes East.
Started organizing my receipts for my taxes last night while listening to the hockey game. Amazing that the Habs managed to beat the Pens in a shootout. I’m going to work on my taxes a bit more tonight before hitting the hay. Another exciting Friday night! Claudine went out with some girlfriends. I could take the opportunity to work on some writing but I will procrastinate with taxes instead. Or with organizing all the 2010 letters together. It would be nice to load the book up to Lulu.

Why do you suppose there is such a real or perceived link between professional sports and the military? I decided to watch hockey tonight and was going to turn the TV off after Boston took a 2-0 lead, but kept it on while making a paté Chinois. I’m glad I did! What a dramatic comeback and win by the Habs.
I brought Rose into bed with us at 7:30 and we slept in as a family until 9:something. Had breakfast, then I returned the van for work, then we had lunch, then Clo went to Yoga, and Rose and I hung out and played and then walked to the Mile Ed to meet Clo. We ate a late lunch / early supper at a new diner called Comptoir 21, a fish ‘n chips place. Rose really liked the fish and the chips.

And from Samuel Pepys: “Took up my wife and Mercer and the girl, and so home, and there with Mercer to teach her more of “It is decreed,” and to sing other songs.”

Dear Stephen,
I am stressing out about the East goes East events, especially the round table discussion. I know hardly anything about Orientalism and even less how it might apply to Saint John. It does, as it intrinsically affects the development of Canada as a nation, and the rise of China as a superpower, but I can’t make the necessary leaps to tie it all into a series of disparate artists coming to a small east coast city.
Today we piled into the car and went to Mimi’s condo. She had asked me months ago to come back and help wire up her speakers. She fed us a most excellent lunch, an Italian soup with succulent meatballs, alongside a salad consisting of some veal and toast. Afterwards we went grocery shopping to stock up on some dry goods, though Clo did the shopping while Rose and I dozed in the car. Clo has a WWKA rehearsal tonight, I am making a “roti de palette”, and we ate leftover paté Chinois for supper. How does that meal fit into Orientalism? Probably something to do with the Chinese immigrants who helped build the railroad across the country.

Although tense situations sometimes require extreme reactions, losing your temper won’t solve anything now. Today was another big push on the plinths, we’re like a factory: Jon wiring the speakers, Dave and Eric assembling and gluing the pieces, Stacy and I sanding and filling holes and sanding and wiping and priming.
Fighter jets will help the economy? Is Canada building them?
Samuel Pepys: “Home to supper, and so by the fireside to have my head combed, as I do now often do, by Deb., whom I love should be fiddling about me.”

Today Stacy and I spent the morning re-levelling a massive shelving unit that had been installed in Phoebe and Penny’s office, but with more than a half-inch slope.

Last night we went to Caroline and François’ for supper; he had made an excellent lasagna. Rose napped in her tent. For the rest of the weekend, I mostly worked on the East goes East poster and my text, which is getting mildly better. Talking with Mike at the TJ on Sunday helped with my thoughts as well. Dear Stephen,
Our poor little Rose is not feeling well. Last night she was up with a fever of 40 at midnight, and an eye full of pus. She was better this morning, but Latifa still called me in the middle of the afternoon to come get her early from daycare. I was at Mel’s, in the TechnoParc, at the moment, buying a theatre lamp for Ceal Floyer’s piece Double Blind. Her gallery sent us a gobo that is too large for our own lamps. I had taken the car to work with an eye to running errands, so I left direct and picked up Rose. I gave her a bath when we got home and she had a 2-hour nap before Clo came home and we woke her fo supper. She ate a bit, but nothing like her healthy appetite of recent days. It is clear that she is teething on both sides as well. It must be exhausting for her.
I’m working on my EgE text, getting caught up now in Baudrillard, I should be reading more Deleuze, and I’ve tried to forget about Said. I’ll print it tonight for Clo to look at (and probably lacerate). In any case, it needs to be done and formatted for printing on Friday. The exhibition opens on Monday and the gallery needs the brochures with the text and outline of events printed by then.
Horoscope: “The tender Cancer Full Moon falls in your 5th House of Romance and Creativity, encouraging you to have fun while expressing yourself. Still, your friends could act quite judgmental, distorting your easygoing attitude and misinterpreting your true intentions. Don’t skip over any miscommunication today; take a few minutes and clear things up before moving on to what’s next.”
I hope no-one misinterpreted my goofiness or sing-songs today at work.

Dear Stephen,
How did I spend my 24-hours as a bachelor? I washed dishes, some laundry, got my haircut, then walked to the Mile End, ate supper at Comptoir 21, Stacy joined me and we went to an opening at the studio of an artist who was celebrating her 26th birthday by having a show of 26 artists. Kristiina and Adam are in the show so I went mostly to see them, drank numerous beers, then Stacy and I left to watch the Habs game and drink a few more beers at a bar on St. Viateur. After the game we drank more beer at Stacy’s place, then went back to the same building as the studio opening for a much busier (and smokier) opening or launch of some sort. By then I had had enough to drink and left, spent over a half hour waiting for the bus, refused to pay or swipe my card when I got on (because I was mad at the bus schedule?) then missed my stop. Ended up walking home from past Jarry.
Today, I worked mostly on that damn text for East goes East. Rebecca helped edit, and sent a couple versions throughout the day. Then Clo and Rose came back, I made supper (chicken with a pre-made mole sauce), and finished the formatting for the text and the brochure. Listened to the Habs game, the return of Saku Koivu, the big late-period comeback, the loss in shootout. Now off to wash dishes and start reading Galore. Our neighbours are having a party, and invited us but Clo has gone to bed (she isn’t feeling well) and I don’t feel much like socializing. Let’s check my horoscope for insights into why:
“The Moon in your 7th House of Partners can help to stabilize a relationship today, as long as you’re willing to narrow your focus. Although you may be thinking about how to improve your financial situation, it’s more important now to concentrate on creating common ground with someone else, rather than going off on your own. Things won’t change as quickly as you wish, so reduce the pressure by being less aggressive in your approach and allowing some time to pass before taking further action.”
In regards to improving my financial situation, I did make payments on the line of credit and the credit card today, still on track (hopefully) for Freedom 2012. Maybe Samuel Pepys has some good financial advice from 1668:

Dear Stephen,
Had a couple outings with Rose today. The first was brunch with Adam and Kristiina at Le vieux velo on Beaubien (I had the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, yum!), and then supper at Sarah’s. It was an apartment full of kids: six, to be precise. And six adults. We had chili and homemade mac and cheese. Amy and Braden brought hot apple cider, which was perfect as it was -21 when we left. Rose was exhausted by the end of it and so am I. Off to bottle my own chili (had the slow-cooker on it all afternoon) and then bed.
Horoscope: “Be sure that you’re very clear about what you’re doing now, or your good intentions could be pulled off track by a simple twist of fate. Solid preparation and consistent execution of your plan is mandatory, but still may not be enough to avoid an unexpected surprise. If you find yourself wandering off course, just make the necessary adjustments later on. Do the best you can, but don’t fight a battle that you cannot win.”
What does it mean? Is it about East goes East or Ceal Floyer? Or my own work, my letters to you? I am thinking of ditching the horoscopes and Samuel Pepys. Also I am thinking of just Tweeting you “I am still alive”. Seems like it makes more sense. At any rate, here’s Pepys:

Dear Stephen,
Sorry I didn’t write last night, the board meeting at SKOL went on longer than anticipated. On top of that, there was a situation with the metro, so Simon and I walked to St. Laurent to take the bus. I convinced him to join the boar. It was good he joined, too, as the Canada Council has been giving SKOL grief over a lack of “practicing visual artists” on the board. Since the 70s having a board made up of a majority of artists was the rule, but unfortunately the rule still stands, even though organizations have grown and developed beyond that narrow model. Even the Canada Council gives mixed messages: diversify, become more professional, engage other members of the community to take part, introduced expertise (i.e. lawyers, accountants, etc.) into the operating structures. So SKOL has done that, but now the Canada Council is holding fast to an antiquated notion of who and for what ARCs are. They don’t count people who studied art history or are cultural workers, or are even just enthusiasts. It’s a bureaucratic snafu it is.
But enough of that rant for now. The Ceal Floyer pre-installation continued today, with Jon and I tackling the 10-foot door makeover in G1. We managed to seamlessly introduce the telescopic slide, only to realize, when attempting to fasten the door to it, that the door (and wall, for that matter) are completely out of wack, not square, not straight, not level. So tomorrow I will make a new door panel from pieces of 1/4″ MDF glued together. This way it will be lighter, it won’t need the wheels, and it will be square. Or, at least square to the wall.
There were printing issues in Saint John to deal with today as well. Seems like the brochure was just getting done today, for some reason. I fear the poster are not ready yet and if they are, they have no sponsor logos on them. I have taken to dealing direct with the printers for Karen’s works, but there is less an issue there. Still need to find a way to print her placemats in that traditional paper placemat style.
Horoscope: “The Moon in your 9th House of Travel may be heating up your desire to go on an adventure, but your plans could crash into the reality of previous work commitments. Even if you believe that you can juggle your schedule and make everything fall into place, it’s becoming apparent that your path is blocked for some inexplicable reason. Don’t overcompensate by canceling your plans because the outlook could change quickly. Wait for the energy to shift before deciding what to do next.”
Wow, that sounds EXACTLY like what I was thinking today: that there is way too much work fro me at DHC at the moment and the trip to SJ is badly timed. Not that I was seriously considering not going, the team is able here, and there really is not rush. Maybe it is talking about the later trip, to Waterloo later in the month, helping Karen take supplies for an installation there?

Sorry I haven’t written in a few days. Rose and I flew in to Saint John on Friday. Air Canada had a belt malfunction and our large suitcase didn’t make it on the plane. They had it delivered to my parents’ house the next morning, with an external pocket ripped 85% off. I’ll keep you posted as to my requests to have it replaced. Saturday we drove to Timberlea, NS and hung out with my brother and Tamara and cousin Jordyn. Sunday we had a big family gathering: Brian and Grampy, plus Nanny, Vicki and Peter. It was a houseful, but nice to see everyone, even briefly. The cousins played well together, though at that age they kind of ignored one another and played with toys, or crawled around in circles chasing the dog. Rose was quite fascinated with the dog, as well as the two cats at my folks’ I don’t think neither she nor Kuan recognize one another. We drove back today. Now I’m to concentrate more on East goes East; a snowstorm is in the forecast, which makes me think of things that haven’t been thought of yet. Will the snow be cleared for the burning? Who will clear it?
How do you feel that Yann has stopped sending you books?
