subject Le recensement accepte les formulaires longs facultatifs incomplets; Romeo Cormier found guilty in kidnap, sexual assault case

Dear Stephen,

Sorry about the long delay. We went to New York and before that was the opening at DHC and we were just busy, busy, busy.

Today Guy Turcotte was found not criminally responsible for his heinous acts of murder against his very own children. I know he has to live with his guilt and pain the rest of his life but I still don’t feel justice was served. I think he should be taken to a very far away place and left there. He should, in effect, be banished. How do we as a society expect to forgive him for what he has done? And what bad precedence, for basically paving the way for anyone who loses their mind to do whatever they can to whomever. “I was just so depressed and lost it, had no idea what I was doing, chopped up my own kids”. How does one do that? Of course he was (and possibly still is) crazy, one could argue that anyone who takes the life of another is a little off-kilter, no?

Are these the actions of someone not criminally responsible: “He refused to pay for the children’s funeral. He instructed his parents to withdraw the remaining $1,200 from the bank account he shared with Gaston. He drew up a detailed list of items he wanted retrieved from the Piedmont home, including a bag of potatoes. He removed Gaston as beneficiary of his life insurance and from his will.”

Sounds to me like he was more concerned about money and vindictiveness against his ex than worrying about his morally reprehensible crimes. He may not be criminally responsible, but he is responsible nonetheless.

I have to stop thinking about this.

Brooklyn was fun: we saw Greg’s sculpture on Randall’s Island, and also found time to see PS1, and even went to Long Beach. We found the drive there and back a tad too long, however. Especially the 2 hours we waited in line at the border on July 1. Did you hear if there were any terrorists caught that day? No? I’m so glad Homeland Security is scaring terrorists from using Canada as a gateway into the US. Keep up the good work and billions of $!

Dear Stephen,

I’m still waiting for a response from the Conservative Party re: that photograph. I tried calling them again today (fourth time) but the phones are down, so I sent a message. Here is the message:

Hi there! I have three questions / comments.

Firstly, I have left a series of messages with your receptionists (at least three) concerning a receipt and a photograph from the National Convention last month. I have yet to receive an invoice, as I was a paying delegate and I was told I would received confirmation via email, which never happened. I would still like to received this confirmation.

Secondly, there was a photograph taken of me and my 1 1/2-year old daughter with The Right Honourable Stephen Harper and it was used in the complementary poster given to delegates at the end of the convention. I would very much like to have a copy of this photograph (at a higher resolution), if you can supply me with the name of the company responsible for the poster and / or the photographer that would be greatly appreciated.

Thirdly, your phones are not working today.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Chris Lloyd

And I finally replied to Michel, the VP of the Papineau riding association:

Salut Michel,

MERCI

And what is it with child-killers going unpunished in this world? WTF? Casey Anthony?

I’m finishing up some office admin before heading to James’ family cottage in Ontario for the weekend. Am taking Rose with me. Should be fun!

Dear Stephen,

Currently, according to www.thefuckingweather.com, it’s fucking hot out. And it was all weekend, too. We had an absolutely fantastic time at Big Gull Lake, near Coxvale. Rose was excellent on the drive there and back, and only had 2 mishaps the whole time there. The first happened ten minutes after our arrival when she climbed up the back of a child’s plastic lawn chair, tipped it over and crashed mouth-first into the edge of the picnic table. She received four cuts and scratches as well as a massive puffed lip, but luckily no damage to the teeth. Sunday afternoon just before leaving she fell off another chair and landed mouth-first on the deck, opening up the old wound and creating a new cut on the inside of her lip. I treated her to a stop at McDonald’s on the way home. She loves the fries and ice cream and watching the kids in the Play Room. I still hate McDonald’s, but me going there once or twice isn’t going to change the world one way or another.

So we ate well, drank well, swam a lot, water skied once (even Stacy got up this time around), and there was a broken water pipe and minor flood in the basement, which we sopped up with towels and a carpet. Four guys and four kids, what a weekend!

Today it was back to the grind, though now that the shows are up and there isn’t a whole lot of AV maintenance the grind is pretty relaxed. I saved replacing burned light bulbs for tomorrow so Jon has something to do.

My annoyance with Bixi has grown. It always seems to happen that during the week all the bikes are gone in my neighbourhood by 8:30am. Then all the stations downtown are full by 9. WTF? The I tried peeling off the sticker ads and lo! and behold, with the hot and humid weather they peel off so easy! So my new project will be to liberate as many Bixis as I can from this ugly and pointless intrusion into public space.

I tried calling the Conservative Party headquarters again today but received the same technical message. Why would the phones still be down? In any case, I received a reply from my message last week, which I post below:

Mr. Lloyd,

Thank you for contacting the Conservative Party. I’m sorry to hear that you never received your confirmation of registration for Convention 2011.. I have attached a copy.

As for the photo of you, your daughter and the Prime Minister, the team that took the photo can be reached at photo@pmo-cpm.gc.ca. Best of luck.

And another message to and from Michel, regarding our follow-up meeting:

Salut Michel,

Also, I’m still annoyed about how the Government of Canada moved to oppose naming asbestos a hazardous material. You should just leave it in Parliament then.

subject John Baird en visite officielle en Chine; MS sufferers unfazed by second death after ‘liberation’ therapy

Dear Stephen,

I have a new project (to distract me from all the others currently on back burner): removing the ads from individual Bixi bikes. As you know, I often ride a Bixi too and from work, but what often happens is that the stations in my neighbourhood run out of bikes and the stations downtown are full. It drives me nuts! And for some reason my annoyance with this fact has turned on the new ads Bixi introduced this season. The ads are stickers placed on the fenders, and I,ve found that with the hot and muggy weather they peel right off! So I’ve been doing just that, and as ineffective and illegal as it may be, it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Dear Stephen,

The heatwave continues. Spent Saturday night in Elgin with Caro and François at their new summer place. I helped François solidify the ceiling beams and extend the wall panelling above the former drop ceiling. On Sunday we dismantled and re-built a bridge. On Saturday morning we drove up with Caro and Zöe, and in the afternoon we went to a nearby river and waded and swam. Rose loved it, especially just sitting in a shallow spot and picking up and dropping stones. Tonight I put the finishing touches on my front balcony screen door. We’re in final apartment cleanup and organization mode, as we prepare for our vacation departure and the arrival of our subletters. I have 2 more days of work during which I will try to plan some of our travel routes. The Bixi Liberation project continues but at a slower pace. Tonight I cycled home with wood and a saw so was not able to deface any, but I got a dozen in the morning on my way to work. I need to try to sell my U2-Moncton tickets. Do you want to go? I have 2 on the field and 2 side-by-sides in the rear grandstand, which will probably be decent seats for U2, if not entirely ideal for Arcade Fire. Off to have a cool shower and try to beat some of this heat. As sticky and uncomfortable as it is I still prefer it to the cold.

subject Ottawa veut blanchir la réputation des sables bitumineux; Chinese fugitive loses final bid to stay in Canada

Dear Stephen,

It. Is. So. Damned. HOT.

Cannot sit still, must have another shower. We are packing and cleaning the apartment. Tonight I also did part 2 of the interview with Stacy for the Khyber newsletter; he has a show in October. Mostly we are trying to beat the heat (pools!) and get ready for vacation. We leave tomorrow morning, so I might not be writing in a while. Plan to do some heavy relaxation on the South Shore of NS. There were crazy lightning storms and thunderstorms and heavy rainfall tonight in Montreal. Our apartment is still hot. Hot as Tar Sands. Hot as Hell. The Tar Sands will never seem clean to my eyes. Take care,

-chris
