subject Le Canada coupe sa contribution à l’UNESCO; Carney supports Greek referendum on eurozone bailout
Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived a day of working on plans, and grocery shopping with Rose. I wanted to pick up a few things to make pizza, and put to good use the baking stone Rebecca and Greg got for us this summer. Unfortunately I was in a rush and a bit frazzled – Rose kept trying to jump out of the shopping cart – and I bought regular pie crust dough instead of pizza dough. So the pizza’s are a bit ridiculous. I made three anyway, just so the stuff doesn’t go to waste, and we’ll eat them for lunch. Clo is out at her weekly choir practice.
I received some interesting mail from the Conservative Party today; an “urgent reply form” about the Omnibus Crime Bill (the Conservatives call it the “Safe Streets and Communities Act”. And of course they ask for money as well, and even include a petition. Looks like even with the majority they still want to convince the opposition parties to jump on board, and expect to spend $225,000 to do so. I will take the opportunity to use the business reply envelope and stuff it with plywood upon which I will write my disapproval of the flawed legislation. Getting tougher on crime will not make Canada safer, it will just put more people in jail, leading to a cycle of continued crime and poverty. Best to fix the problems early: invest in schools, public housing, parks, recreation centres, the arts, preventative medicine, health care, etc. and you will build a healthy community. Trying to convince us all that we currently “live in fear of crime in their neighbourhood” is ridiculous.
Off to clean up after the pizzas, wash and fold some laundry, and get ready for bed. Tomorrow is a studio day after work!
And what is with the suspension of payments to UNESCO? Because Palestine was accepted? What sour grapes! You can support peace in the middle east and even give preference to Israel and still allow Palestine its statehood, no?

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived a walk through the RESO all the way from the WTCC to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel to retrieve a package my mom had sent with friends staying there who left it with the concierge. It is an Elmo hat.
Thanks for the same old reply the other day. The first since December 2008, almost three years.
Last night I didn’t go to the studio, I helped Stacy man the bar in Dean Baldwin’s installation (Boat in a Bottle) at the MAC. Wednesdays are free nights and one of the only nights of the week that the installation is activated as a functioning bar. I mostly washed glasses but I gave Stacy a break and took my turn in the capsized vessel serving South Sea Te and West Side Cosmos. Stacy made some good money and we shared a pizza at Magpie later on, his treat. That was as close as I came to the studio, but I did run across Patrice Loubier at the MAC and brought him up-to-date with my plans to run as a Conservative Party candidate in Papineau in 2015. I really have to work out how I am going to handle this, how to arrange the language, and my approach.
Tonight is laundry night and apartment cleanup. Tomorrow I plan to re-paint the dresser we bought last week at Renaissance, and we plan to look for a futon for the spare room. I need to better organize the spare room. There is currently no room to spare in there.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the opening at SKOL last night, “sortons les archives”. It is a group show where the artists activate, display, or otherwise use the SKOL archives as a reference or starting point in the work. It is a good-looking show, and there was a good turnout for the vernissage, lots of people in fact. I drank my quota of beer then left.
Tonight I am going to the Ball at the MBA. Phoebe bought a table for DHC-ART and I was selected to go, along with James, Cheryl, John and a few others. I picked up my rental tuxedo yesterday, and the re-sized vest today. I’m hanging out with Rose today, as there is an opening of an exhibition at Oboro later in the day so Clo had to leave after noon to go work. I plan to go to the Silver Flag opening this afternoon before heading to Etienne and Sarah’s. Rose will have a sleepover there with Femke. Lots of art activities this weekend! I’ll tell you more about them tomorrow; Rose is waking up from her nap, I have to go.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the MBA Ball last night, though I did take a tumble off the dancing platform. I felt compelled to dance with the hired girls who were there to hype the crowd, and didn’t notice a gap between the stage and the platform, and fell between. My back is sore and my hip bruised and scraped, but feels like no permanent damage. The tux was OK, too. I danced and flirted shamelessly with Cheryl, but again nothing out of the ordinary. I need to get a full report from James tomorrow, as there are often gaps in my recollection of debauched evenings.
Rose had a great night with Femke, they played really well together, and for the morning as well. Clo and I headed down to Sarah’s for brunch and it was very enjoyable seeing the girls together. Ran some errands in the afternoon and we made pizzas for supper, this time with the proper dough. Prepared a macreuse, or beef shoulder, to go in the slow-cooker tomorrow. Spray-painted some of the drawers I had painted the past few days. Now we just need to order the new knobs and add the decals Etienne brought back from Holland as a gift and Rose will have a new dresser.
Watched Tabloid, a recent documentary by Errol Morris about that girl who made such a tabloid sensation in the late ’70s in England with the supposed kidnapping of a Mormon. I’m too tired to go into more details about anything. Off to bed to read about Khadafi in the New Yorker.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. Survived another day of work. Work in these dangerous times. These times of poorly distributed wealth.
There were problems with the proposed Adtec, the Omer Fast film, the scenic paint from LA, the never responsive Theresa Margolles. But things are moving along. My PHI Centre Sketchup models are becoming better and better. I’m hoping to take a 3-day course starting at the end of the month to advance my skills even more. The other night I had a dream in Sketchup, which I find weird and slightly disturbing at the same time.
Everything was done early tonight: Rose was in bed and the dishes done by 7. I had hoped to continue cleaning and organizing the new guest room and/or writing some project or grant proposals but I squandered the evening on emails, Third Space Gallery website updates (!!!) and Facebook. But now I’m sick of sitting at a computer (or sick of the chocolate I have been eating) and will get up and hang some laundry and clean my room dammit!

subject Financement électoral douteux: le Parti conservateur plaide coupable; Government allows infant-formula claims despite ‘no acceptable evidence’
Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the metro and walking in the rain after work from the studio. I had stopped at the studio to get my “cahier d’exercices” from the 2009 exhibition at Atelier Punkt. The organizer, Emmanuel Galland, is re-doing the exhibition in Québec City. I found it was easier to walk direct from the studio rather than try the bus, the metro or Bixi. I avoided the train tracks as CP Rail has been cracking down on trespassers lately. What do urban planners expect when you run railway tracks through an urban area, that “desire paths” will simply follow roads? Of course, when the tracks were laid a good chunk of the Mile End and Little Italy were probably less populated. At one point it was all farmland, can you believe it?
Rose didn’t eat anything except some yogurt for supper, but she was cute as a button and we Skyped with my folks and we coloured and had a bath and she is talking up a storm. All one-word sentences, mind you, but repeating anything and everything. She was in bed early, so I had time to clean the kitchen, wash some laundry and make some conservative art. this consists of wood-burning phrases onto half-inch plywood cut to fit inside the business reply envelopes I get with all the Party’s requests for donations. I posted some samples on the dear PM blog, check it out if you have any time available from fixing the economy.
Off to bed and the new New Yorker!

Claudine not feeling well last night and today. She is at an Oboro board meeting tonight. Rose was cute as a button but still did not eat. Maybe she does not like paté Chinois? She went to bed early. She had a Saturday night sleepover at her cousins’, after the funeral for Claudine’s grandfather George, in St. Eustache. Philippe and I skipped the family gathering at St. Hubert afterwards, electing instead to get our own St. Hubert but driving the kids to Île Perrot. Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the second day of the de-install, as well as an evening at the studio. I also made a cute little Tyvek suit for Rose. She tried it on tonight, both Claudine and I tried to get photos and videos but Rose moves too quick. She wore it for a good five minutes though, and it actually fit quite well (it was a three-piece, not a one-piece, but I was making it in my spare time and with no plan or pattern. Just making it up as I went along, as I do most things in life).
My chicken-olive-preserved lemon slow-cooked all day on the balcony and was delicious. Rose even ate some, though she preferred the rice that was cooked later. She does like rice, just plain brown rice. And she ate two bowl of plain yogurt, but with maple syrup added. She loves maple syrup. Who doesn’t?

I am still alive. I survived the Pacart pickup. Upon arriving at work we saw three large trucks int he back parking lot; luckily, there was room for two Pacart trucks behind out space as well. It still took four truckloads to move all of Berlinde’s crates, but the pauses in between allowed us to take our annual technical team Xmas photo and then have a pizza and oysters and beers and vodka break. The crates moved surprisingly easily, even the over-sized crate that we had to carry down the front stairs. We had lots of manpower and I think the breaks helped energize us. Am waiting for Clo to come back from a performance and I will meet up with the crew at Café Cleopatra. Studying some of my art and politics speeches and news at the moment, in prep for Sophie Castonguay’s performance next week and my own planned intervention in 24-gauche in December. I learned so many time-saving strategies and better building blocks. My models will only improve. As a class we each worked on a version of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion. Finished early enough to pick up Rose around 5, which is good because Clo is in NY and there is no-one else to get her. Spent tonight, after putting Rose to bed, working on Dear PM letters, posting to and possibly flirting with someone on Facebook, and preparing for the performance tomorrow. Afterwards Stacy and I went for beers with Jason and Mathieu, but in doing so we missed the reception and free wine after the other performances were over. It was probably good in a way, as it kept me away from my Facebook flirt.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived a Sunday morning 8am wake-up call, breakfast and a bus ride to the MACM. We stayed for an hour. Rose liked Charles Stankievech’s installation LOVELAND, which features a big video image of the North pole (or some similar, desolate place full only of snow and ice), with wind blowing that gradually turns into some purple smoke reminiscent of the smoke monster from LOST. I have a bit of a bias towards his work as apparently he copied one of Jon Knowles’ pieces and refused to admit it. Other memorable works were videos by Myriam Yates (especially the bird calls in the national parks), and Rose especially liked jake moore’s big, feather-coated floating thing. Afterwards we ate at the café in Place des Arts. The video installation in the renovated hallway is quite something to watch.
This afternoon our landlord finally came by to measure and then drop off the rubber anti-slip strips. I’ll have to install them tomorrow night, they really smell quite strong. I’ve stacked them in the downstairs for now.
Made pizza tonight (pesto, chicken, onions, mushrooms and feta cheese), and as well prepared a beef and yellow bean soup for the slow-cooker tomorrow. Guess what Rose ate: grilled cheese sandwich (2 bites) and alphabet pasta with pesto.
Now off to finish dishes (last round), then maybe shave and have a shower, then maybe watch a movie. Damn it’s already 9pm. Where does the time go?

Wow, reading through the news today makes it hard for me to feel deep affinity for your party. How will I ever convincingly run? I mean, the Founding Principles sound OK:
A balance between fiscal accountability, progressive social policy and individual rights and responsibilities;
Build a national coalition of people who share these beliefs and who reflect the regional, cultural and socio-economic diversity of Canada;
Develop this coalition, embracing our differences and respecting our traditions, yet honoring a concept of Canada as the greater sum of strong parts;
The Conservative Party will operate in a manner accountable and responsive to its members;
- A belief in loyalty to a sovereign and united Canada governed in accordance with the Constitution of Canada, the supremacy of democratic parliamentary institutions and the rule of law;
- A belief in the equality of all Canadians; (so…gay marriage?)
- A belief in the freedom of the individual, including freedom of speech, worship and assembly;
- A belief in our constitutional monarchy, the institutions of Parliament and the democratic process;
- A belief in the federal system of government as the best expression of the diversity of our country, and in the desirability of strong provincial and territorial governments;
- A belief that English and French have equality of status, and equal rights and privileges as to their use in all institutions of the Parliament and Government of Canada;
- A belief that the best guarantors of the prosperity and well-being of the people of Canada are:
- The freedom of individual Canadians to pursue their enlightened and legitimate self-interest within a competitive economy;
- The freedom of individual Canadians to enjoy the fruits of their labour to the greatest possible extent; and
- The right to own property;
- A belief that a responsible government must be fiscally prudent and should be limited to those responsibilities which cannot be discharged reasonably by the individual or others;
- A belief that it is the responsibility of individuals to provide for themselves, their families and their dependents, while recognizing that government must respond to those who require assistance and compassion;
- A belief that the purpose of Canada as a nation state and its government, guided by reflective and prudent leadership, is to create a climate wherein individual initiative is rewarded, excellence is pursued, security and privacy of the individual is provided and prosperity is guaranteed by a free competitive market economy; (my italics here; how is prosperity guaranteed? Who prospers?)
- A belief that the quality of the environment is a vital part of our heritage to be protected by each generation for the next; (so, ummm…Kyoto? Tar Sands?)
- A belief that Canada should accept its obligations among the nations of the world; (see above)
- A belief that good and responsible government is attentive to the people it represents and has representatives who at all times conduct themselves in an ethical manner and display integrity, honesty and concern for the best interest of all;
- A belief that all Canadians should have reasonable access to quality health care regardless of their ability to pay; and
- A belief that the greatest potential for achieving social and economic objectives is under a global trading regime that is free and fair. (love that bit about Fair Trade!)
Of course, all this is super-vague. A heavy emphasis on the individual, to be sure, but otherwise sounds great. I can get behind this. But how does it explain the Omnibus Crime Bill? I read that minimum sentences for growing more than 201 marijuana plants are stiffer than violent sexual assault of a toddler. Getting rid of the gun registry? Killing the wheat board? The $35-billion jets? The new prisons? The 5-10% across-the-board “austerity” cuts in the next budget? The CBC?
You know, I could live with a lot of this if we weren’t subsidizing Big Oil to the teeth. Dirty!
Oh, I did get the 2012 Conservative Party of Canada calendar in the mail today (along with more requests for $500). It included another postage-paid business reply envelope. I mailed my most recent wood-burning today, and have a couple other envelopes on reserve, but am sensing that the Party is on to me. The accompanying letter is worded almost the same as the November 18 letter, though it is not printed on nice linen stock nor does it mention the Leaders Circle. Also, it was dated November 11. After putting Rose to bed, washing dishes and making myself a pizza (onion, zucchini and mushrooms with 2 cheeses; scraping the bottom of the fridge, basically) I made another word burning on old 1″-thick wooden cutting board. This one reads “Strong, Stable, National, Conservative Majority something-something”.
