subject Stephen Harper vante les réalisations du PCC; Three more police officers charged in Grenada death: lawyer

Dear Stephen,

Happy New Year! I am still alive. Do you have any resolutions? Here are some of mine, tentative:

1. finish the front room. we’re almost there! I finished painting today, and even moved my shirt closet (a shelf, basically), which also meant re-sizing it (now have to hang my shirts within 32″ instead of 48″).
2. exercise more. possibly start going to the gym at work (included in my salary).
3. go to the studio more. possibly regularly, such as Wednesday evenings. Maybe Fridays, when we are not in crazy install period.
4. spend less money and pay off more debt. I don’t think I can fully succeed with Freedom 2012 but if I get a good tax return I can put a fairly good dent in my debts. Claudine has hidden my credit card.
5. be more active with my so-called art career. This means being more careful and not applying for things the day they are due. No, I was not successful with my CALQ grant.
6. take my health more seriously. maybe even try to get a family doctor and get a complete physical. Get the big moles on my head checked out.
7. be an awesome dad and hubby. maybe try to be a better son and brother and uncle and godfather, too. be more communicative. maybe check out this “mindfulness” concept.
8. try to equal you in the Klout standings (you’re currently a 61, I’m at 45)
9. have more friends over for suppers or brunch. Sarah came over tonight. We ate meat, some leftover deer ribs from cousin Mimi from last year, and veggies. Clo and Sarah are on a Paleo diet, meaning no processed or refined foods, as well as no grains. I had quinoa. Rose loves quinoa. (quinoa is technically a seed, not a grain. Also, Clo eats pasta as well as bread from time to time. And dairy. She is not strictly paleo).

The Paleo diet can broadly be defined as a gluten-free, grain-free, wheat-free, sugar-free and dairy-free diet. Instead, the Paleo diet is based on the consumption of seasonal vegetables and fruits, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, wild-caught fish and seafood, free-range eggs, avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, coconut milk and herbs and spices.

It actually sounds really good. Maybe I’ll add trying a partial paleo diet as resolution #10.

You planning any diets for yourself?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a dinner party at Anne’s new apartment last night. Her renovations are complete and her kitchen, bathroom and living room are really well done. A good chunk of the AC crew were there, including Elie, who has completed her contract with UNESCO in Paris. We drank many a bottle of red wine. We stayed late and gave Emily some cash to take a cab home. We were lucky she was available to babysit on short notice. We have one more free babysitting night from the car exchanges. Then we will have to pay, or go out less. We don’t go out all that much anyway. Tonight Clo is out with Sarah and Melissa, and tomorrow night is my dedicated studio night. Tomorrow is also first day back at work, I am nervous because there is so much to do. Today I bought wood to make Rose’s bed frame, and installed a lamp and mirror in the new front room. A cheap $8 paper lampshade from IKEA. I was in and out in ten minutes; the best is to go in through the exit. I am making a big pot of chili to give us a few lunches this week. I may watch a movie tonight but most likely will go to bed early and read.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the first day back to work after the holidays. I don’t want to talk about all the technical glitches we are experiencing at the moment. How can playing a video be so damn tricky? And who even knew that there could be a big difference between 1080p and 1080i. Sometimes I hate the digital world.

subject Harper: l’Iran est une menace «très sérieuse» à la paix mondiale; Iran greatest threat to world peace: Harper

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Survived another day of projectors, players, cables, some painting, audio, amplifiers, a gong show. The stress is palpable, but by the end of the day we had Omer Fast’s 5,000 feet is the best video running and it looks and sounds some sweet. True HD!

Gilles rented a van to drive the bookcases he built for Clo from Gatineau. I installed one in Clo’s room, in the corner where before we had a wall of hooks. We started to re-arrange books but became discouraged with the sheer magnitude of the task, so Clo is practicing her ukulele instead. I washed dishes, made a shelf in my tool closet, and had a shower.

So you really think Iran wants to build and actually use nuclear weapons? Sounds scary. You must have some good intelligence on this file. So if Iran is out of the way, world peace is just around the corner?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. We got 5,000 feet is the best up and running, though not optimally, not yet. It is running off a Mac Mini instead of the HD01, and the rear speakers are just doubling the front, as none of us can figure out the damn ARCAM unit. Simon can work on it next week.

Spent the evening integrating more shelving into the big bookcase in the front room, as well as in Clo’s closet. I am perhaps a bit obsessed with shelving. Almost as obsessed as you seem to be with stacking the Senate. Rumours abound that you’ll fill it by next month. I guess this fits with your strategy of job creation. Not a bad salary, either. It would take me just over 3 years to earn what a senator does in one.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a Saturday with my family. We all went to the market in the morning then I went to the studio to meet Nathalie Q. to giver her some work for her birthday show (she is the young artist obsessed with yellow). This year it is at her studio in Toronto. I gave her a rubbing from Duluth made in 04 and the 3 rubbings made from the inscription on the beaver pond fountain in the Loyalist Burial Ground in Saint John from 06. For the afternoon Clo and I put the bed frame together that her folks gave us, and moved the box spring to the front room. Technically it is now my room / guest room. We also re-arranged more books. Clo had a dinner date so Rose and I hung out in the evening, Skyped with my folks, ate, had a bath, read a bit and had more crisis’s over Elmo videos. Rose wants to watch way too much TV or Youtube videos (she especially likes videos I have made of her), and she throws a screaming fit when we say no. I hope this is just a phase and that it will not last all year as she just turned 2. Also this evening I moved some shelves around in the projects room. Now I think I’ll watch a film, eat some popcorn and drink some beer.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived Sunday brunch with waffles and eight other adults plus Rose. Sarah W. invited us over to her very tastefully decorated apartment a couple streets over. The waffles were delicious. I went back later in the late afternoon to help put a board of hooks back on the wall; it was coming off the wall, the anchors were not holding. I’ve been in shelf mode for the past week so just felt obliged to help. Also it was I who almost yanked the hooks out of the wall in the first place. This afternoon I mounted the pegboard in the Projects Room as Clo organized books. The apartment feels about 85% done. We still need to decide about mattress or box spring for the front room / guest room / my room. Do we get a queen mattress or a double box spring?

My plan is to get to bed early tonight and get a good jump on the week tomorrow. big crew in for work as the install really begins in earnest: Pacart delivery, guest technicians arriving from France and Victoriaville, new gear to set up, lots of prep and coordination. Think I’ll upload some more videos of Rose to my Youtube account. She loves watching the Rose playlist. I think I’ll look at some Bookshelf Porn and then continue reading Famous Last Words by Timothy Findley. Claudine quite liked it but I’m having a hard time getting into it. I did finish and enjoy the Steve Jobs bio a while back. You reading anything interesting at the moment?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a couple nights of pouring warm olive oil in my right ear. Let me explain. For the last week it has been plugging up off and on. The Internet tells me that warm olive oil can help. In fact my ear has been fine these past two days. I’ll maybe do another treatment tonight, though there hasn’t been any sign of excess wax buildup.

The install is going well. I spoke to a class of Concordia students about technical challenges we often face with large scale, multi-media exhibitions. Then I installed a fan capable of sucking 450 cubic feet per second in the projection booth, as the Christie sucks 2000 watts to give 12,000 Lumen and kicks off a lot of heat.

There is still a bit of a mystery surrounding the Mexican morgue water for the Theresa Margolles piece Plancha. The way the piece works is that this water, which has been used to wash anonymous murder victims’ bodies, drips from the ceiling onto hot metal plates on the floor and evaporates with a hiss into the air. The water was supposed to be included in the crates but when we received the crates aside from the tubing and other equipment  there were only empty morgue water containers. My contact at her gallery in Zurich who had shipped the pieces discovered that the transporters had dumped it out. Apparently they were not allowed to ship liquids. He says will Fedex us some. So we are all wondering: is it really morgue water from Mexico? Or is it really tap water from Zurich? JZ says that there is a “concentrated” batch, but also admits it could be something else, though for him it is important that we maintain its provenance. Which is more important to you, the idea of dripping morgue water dissipating over hot plates, or that it be actual morgue water?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the 3-alarm wake up call (we all three slept in a bit yesterday) as well as the red carpet installation in G5. Yes, Parreno is getting wall-to-wall red carpeting for his June 8, 1968 film / video installation. What else did I work on? A bunch of little things. Helped Simon and Jon and David with speakers for 5,000 feet, and helped JF complete the glass window insert for the Parreno projection booth. Fished some cable, painted a wall, that sort of thing. Responded to numerous Fedex Custom Critical calls regarding customs brokerage for the cinema screen and frame currently en route from Virginia.

Clo made (defrosted) perogies tonight and rose ate more than her fair share, incredible. They must rank right up there with

Now I need to run a load of laundry, trim my beards, have a shower and get to bed. And try not to get lost in the Twitterverse / facebook / email chasm that currently lies open before me. For example, why turn the Lorax into a typical run-of-the mill Hollywood animated feature? I bet if Pixar had the rights to it it wouldn’t look so trashy. Good grief it is already almost 10pm.

My old pal Emily J. just texted me in Gmail and wants me to put in a good word for her. She’s quit art, apparently. Or maybe not. Maybe she is just kidding. (I told her I often thought of her as a stand-up comic. I think she’d be good.) Being non-professional is the new cool. Perhaps it has always been the only cool; it is the pressure of money that infiltrates the rest of the art world that tries to make professionals out of artists.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived multiple early-morning phone calls from Fedex Custom Critical to state that 1. at 2:18am the drivers drove in the wrong order (actually one forgot their passport) resulting in delay, and then again at 4:30am that the truck was stuck in snow and needed to be towed. Eventually the frame and screen arrived before 11:30 so not too late and it was easy enough to unpack and unload from the truck. In other news, finally a snowstorm hits Montreal. I think I might ski to work tomorrow.

Claudine and I drank 2 bottles of wine between us during the evening, we had great semi-drunken sex and then ate a quick stir-fry I stirred up and watched some Internet stuff, now more Internet before bed. Sorry about all the Facebook rants tonight but WTF? The whole gas pipeline debacle and now you’re trying to rescind marriages between same-sex couples in Canada if their home state / country is against same sex marriage? Encore, WTF? It’s like saying that if torture or 1 baby rules or women not being allowed to drive is the norm in someones “home” country then Canada’s laws don’t apply? Are you smoking crack?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived an out-of-control and tumbling grinder as if wedged in a pipe and flew out of my hands, falling thirteen feet to the gallery floor below. Luckily I was only just grazed. We had to lob off 3″ from the top of each support column for the Parreno screen. Then we slowly figured out a plan of action for final assembly, and finished the day with the frame semi-mounted. We’ll add the fabric tomorrow. I’ll be bringing Rose to work with me, then going to Oboro for the Mathieu Beausejour opening, Claudine’s first professional curatorial project. The catalogues for her show are finished and look amazing. They have a brilliant reflective cover. It’s rare for an exhibition at an ARC to have a hefty catalogue published the same day as the opening, something Clo planned for and put into place a year ago.

I’m exhausted and going to bed.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a Saturday at work with Rose and the big opening at Oboro, also with Rose. This morning we discovered a major fuckup with the Parreno screen: it is too small for the frame! Harkness made a boo-boo. There are many options on the table at the moment but that doesn’t lessen the stress. Also, Monday is Martin Luther King day in the US, meaning no work. Still, Dennis at Harkness says he can get us a matte screen made by end of day Tuesday, but with a 15-hour (minimum!) Fedex drive that puts us really tight to the opening Wednesday evening. Marie wants to order one from France, because with the 6-hour time difference they could start production and be half-way done by Monday morning. We’re also trying Lesna, the local screen company, but we probably won’t be able to reach them until Monday morning. There are also possible rentals, but again, we are at the weekend and won’t get replies until Monday morning. On top of it all, I’m suddenly working tomorrow morning with Warren to install the door on the projection booth so that Pierrick can make the adjustments to the sound with the proper ambient sound in the room.

I am trying hard to believe that there are no problems, only solutions.

Also, the opening at Oboro was packed, tons of people, even our neighbours Jeremy and Judith, as well as friends outside the art world (Roberts, Michael, Amy and Braden), which was great to see. Unfortunately I missed Clo’s speech as by that time of the evening Rose was beside herself and only wanted to climb up and down the three flights of stairs. I think we did eight rounds. We even left without saying goodbye as every time I tried to coax or carry her into the gallery proper she started a crisis.

I need a shower.

Had a nap in the afternoon. Claudine came home at 4am from the opening last night. I couldn’t get back to sleep.

Went back to the gallery to lock up at the end of the day and cut a shelf for Clo’s room, came home she had made supper, now it is just dishes and then we are watching a movie in bed. Both of us exhausted. Lots of laundry today. Also, very cold. -15, not that bad, but still.

I really need to book a massage for this Friday. I have maybe 85% mobility to my left, there is a tight knot in my back that needs to be undone. Do you see a masseuse regularly? I still haven’t signed up at the gym, maybe after the opening when things settle down a bit.

There is still a lot to do. The Mexican morgue water has still not arrived from Zurich. Lucky for us Lesna can make us a matte screen for tomorrow but we will need to rent a longer truck to go get it. It still may not fit down the hall. There is more electrical work to be done 18-feet up on the ceiling in G5. Also the projection booth is getting too hot.

Anyway, enough about work. It is already affecting my sleep, so I am going to try to go to bed early. Before 9.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a “personal day”, wherein I took Rose to her doctor for her scheduled checkup. The appointment was at 11am and we were late because I always get lost, even though the directions are ridiculously easy. I always drive too far east and get muddled with the railway tracks tying to find my way back. In any case, we still waited almost an hour. The visit was short, Rose had the second part of her measles vaccine, Dr. Luci gave us advice for the recent spat of liquid poos (more yogurt, less milk) and was nonplussed about the story of the stinky pus that came from her ears. After the visit Rose and I ate at the diner downstairs and had mushroom pizza and chicken pasta soup. She ate well, but also threw a fit when it was time to leave. She has developed a strange fascination with washing her hands, almost compulsively. She lately has been sucking the water off her fingers, as if dying of thirst. I debated taking her with me to work for the afternoon, as we missed the deadline for dropping her off at daycare (12:45; after that, the kids are having naps). In the end we just came home and she and I both had naps and I tried again to get my Gardien video formatted to DVD. I’m trying to do it without the stupid menus that iDVD adds automatically (because people love DVD menus so much?). I’m not spending any more money on computer software, so no to Toast, and the free version I tried leaves a ridiculous watermark of its logo throughout the centre of the entire video. It also wouldn’t accept my video anyway, for reasons unclear (the soundtrack? the slow-motion bits?) In any case I have 2 versions ready, I’ll do another tomorrow at work.

Claudine is working late tonight, she has tons to do, especially now that Daniel is on sick leave. I’m annoyed because she is basically doing the whole administrative and artistic director bit yet is only paid about the same as me. She is getting a trip to NYC paid for next week, and Mexico City and Cuba in the coming months, but these are work visits. She’ll get a bonus before the end of the fiscal year but does it really make up for the stress and long hours?

I need to send a head shot and bio to Carmine. Apparently he likes Robert’s Bovinities manuscript and wants to put me in the online catalogue. The book is expected to be published in the fall of 2012. I’ll keep you posted.

I’m off to bed, still worn out from the install, the parties or Rose, or all of the above. Tonight I’m going to try out the front room.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived installing a second ventilation duct in the Parreno projection booth. Then I fixed a mysterious lighting track outage in 451. For the rest of the afternoon I tried to catch up on admin stuff and plans.

I am deeply concerned by reports that members of your office have been threatening charities that support Canadians who have serious concerns about the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and the expansion of the oilsands.

All Canadians, no matter what our political affiliation, have an interest in free and open debate. We have a right to decide what we think is in Canada’s best interests.

Between these private threats to charitable organizations, and the public campaign to discredit thousands of concerned Canadians and First Nations as “foreign special interests” and “radical groups”, I believe that the integrity of these hearings has been badly compromised.

I am writing today to call on you to stop the threats against Canadian charities and ensure that Canadians get a fair hearing so that we can decide whether or not the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline is in Canada’s best interests.

Specifically, I call on you to:

1. Immediately stop your government’s public and private campaign to silence environmental groups.

2. Instruct the National Energy Board to rescind its directive that the hearings be prohibited from considering the costs of expanding the tar sands.

3. Instruct the National Energy Board to respect the rights of First Nations to free, prior and informed consent on any project that affects their territory.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a finissage at the WW TWO space where I struck up a conversation with a pretty yet slightly iPhone-obsessed girl. On Saturday Claudine and I tried to visit galleries but we timed it bad, and Rose ended up asleep in the car (after a crazy spazzing-out session while trying to get her out the door), so we alternated our visits. Saw the Indian show at Art Mur and as well picked up the newly-matted print by Mathieu Beausejour ($56!), then the two-person show at the MAI that Zoe curated. Lots of cool yet somewhat graphic and definitely disquieting drawings in both shows. Then Claudine had a marathon Oboro board meeting to discuss all the craziness going on surrounding Daniel’s illness and sick leave, and we met up later at Tracy, Felix and Rolando’s along with Femke, Sarah and Etienne and we all stuffed ourselves to bursting on absolutely delicious mole which Tracy and Rolando had brought back from Mexico. This morning we continued the Villeray Breakfast Club by hosting brunch, though only Sarah W., Stacy and dean came. We stuffed ourselves on baked French toast and fruit salad and coffee. Later in the afternoon I made paint touchups around the apartment and finally finished framing the ink and pin drawing that François and Caro made for us. On Friday, before getting lots in a couple hours of Facebook, I installed a section of the Sophie Calle carpet in the Projects Room. The apartment is almost done! Now off for a trim and a shower and maybe a film later on, when Clo comes back from working on her laptop at a café on avenue Mont Royal.

I don’t think it would be too much work but Claudine is probably right to remind me of where my priorities should be. How is this even art anymore?

subject Âge de la retraite: les provinces devraient s’inquiéter, selon Bob Rae; Officer ‘grief-stricken’ over Pickton probe delay, inquiry hears

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a meeting out at Lesna with James, JF, and Caroline to finalize some details with the Amentia project. I like to refer to it as the brain damage project.

We’re getting the apartment ready for our guests Stephen and Monica and little Hugo, who arrive tomorrow. Also, Claudine is on a plane to NYC early tomorrow morning. Then it’s off to Mont Tremblant for a couple days. I’m hoping to book a massage and spend some time soaking in the hot tub.

Money is tight, as per usual.

We’re going to watch Beginners in a few minutes. Also, we are downloading Leonard Cohen’s new album called Old Ideas. I’ll let you know what I think of it.
