subject Harper: la victoire du PQ signifie le changement, pas la séparation; If shooter says it’s political, it’s political

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the election results coverage. We went to Kim and Jean-Michel’s so Rose and Thomas could play together while we drank beer and Kim prepared barbecue hamburgers and hotdogs. I stayed late due to the attack at the Metropolis and woke Rose up and walked with her home in the rain. Good thing our stroller still has the plastic rain cover with it. Have been working on Thomas Demand exhibition layouts and 3D models the past few days at work. Tomorrow I plan to get more bathroom supplies (such as a toilet) with Tarik, and continue the renovations. Today is my mom’s 60th birthday. My parents were visiting my brother in NS this past weekend and us brothers had decided to get her an iPod. She seems to enjoy it, and it makes her Skype image much clearer. I’m working on editing some Everyday Goalie videos tonight but not for much longer. I can no longer burn the midnight oil the way I used to.

subject Les députés fédéraux doivent gérer l’impact des compressions; Hoping for a changed tone in Parliament? Don’t hold your breath

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Sorry I haven’t written much lately. Been busy / lazy. The bathroom renovations are moving along briskly now. I added the proper sand-mix cement to the shower pan liner which allows a slope to the drain, also levelled a bit more the space under the sink. Last night was Dean’s opening at the Parisian Laundry, we actually saw a lot of Dean and Karen yesterday at work as he had trouble transferring his video to Blu-ray. Lucky old George Fok came through as the SD card I formatted to dump his Quicktime video on wouldn’t play. It all worked out and looked super-swell for the opening. I shotgunned the last can of beer.

Fast-forward to Sunday (the above written Thursday). I took Friday off work to be at home while our gas-burning water heater was replaced by an electric tank. The guy also fixed our oven so it no longer smells like gas when we cook. Took the opportunity to make paté Chinois tonight. I spent the whole day hanging out with Rose and Femke; they were both starved for a play-date.

The bathroom has advanced: tile on the floor and walls, no grout yet and edges unfinished; I am waiting for a full day where I can rent a proper saw and make all the cuts. Maybe Friday.

I have lots more to say but can’t be bothered to write it all down. I just want to go to bed early and read New Yorkers. Or maybe put up some pictures in Clo’s room; we are still slowly settling in. Oh, she sold the orange chairs already. Also our kitchen table and chairs. We plan to make a new table (Russian ply + hairpin steel legs) and she has her eyes on a new love seat style couch for the nook.

It is my parents’ fortieth wedding anniversary today. Can you maybe send them a card? Have your people call my people for the address. They won’t mind that it is late.

subject Le NPD veut renforcer la Loi sur les conflits d’intérêts; Streamlined dangerous-offender designation infringes on principles of justice, judge rules

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a toilet installation. I had to carve a chunk out of the wall behind it as there was not enough room to install the tank. I had a feeling that this would happen, as the drain is less than 12″ from the wall. It seems all toilets made now use that as a standard. I haven’t hooked the water up yet as the shower taps would need to be installed or capped. I also realize now that my shower pan could use about another 1/8″ of cement around the drain to ensure the tiles rest above the water line. It also isn’t super level. I may buy another bag of cement tomorrow, and return the tile edging that I mistakenly bought at 3/8″ width. My tiles are of course only 1/8″. I’m still hoping to rent a saw on Friday and get the rest of the tiling done so we can grout on the weekend.

In other news, Thomas Demand is making some demands, finally, after a couple weeks of radio silence. Still waiting on concrete numbers for equipment rentals but the show still looks to be very expensive. He is asking for rounded corners for his projection booths. The question of wallpaper is still badly unexamined.

We have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow morning where we may find out if Rose is having a baby brother or sister. Since Rose was a surprise we are doing things a little differently with the second.

I am still fighting with Great West over a reimbursement. Claudine went to a private clinic for a couple ultrasounds and the clarté nucale, which was covered by my group plan last time, but has been changed to exclude pregnancy-related ultrasounds earlier this year. We were never notified, and are now on the hook for $500. I think we have a plausible case to get the clarté nucale covered, as it is a screening to determine whether the foetus would have Downs Syndrome or not. For me now, Great West is the new Telus.

Hello,

I was not contacted by your “specialist” within 24 hours, or at all for that matter. Please note that my original complaint has not yet been resolved to my satisfaction after more than one month.

Hi there.

Thank-you for replying. I have forwarded my complaint to our company plan manager who will discuss the situation directly with our Great West representative, as it appears clear from your letter that you did not register my complaint. I did not require “infertility treatment”. Please read clearly my complaints in the future. Also, your statement “It is the responsibility of the plan member to be aware of what benefits are or are not eligible under the terms of their plan” would be more effective if Great West were clear in listing what benefits are actually eligible, as currently blood tests and ultrasounds appear to be eligible expenses.

subject Ottawa a payé 750 462 $ pour un litige avec les anciens combattants; Canada, Britain to hold talks Monday on joint embassies

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the weekend, and tile-cutting, and an
ultrasound. We’re having a boy! The bathroom renos are not finished
yet but I plan to make tomorrow a sick day and finish cutting and
placing all the remaining tile. We ended up buying 4 boxes of
4″-square tile to finish the shower. Stacy brought my computer to me
from work so I can do a little work from home on the side.

Some other interesting headlines tonight:

“Art book without pictures raises perennial issue of pricey
textbooks”. I thought that maybe there was an outcry about the Art and
Theory book (I still have a copy, though it is the 1990 edition), but
it is some other book that simply leaves out the colour reproductions,
to bring the book down to $180 instead of $800. Whoever heard of a
$800 textbook?

“Environment Minister attempts to add heft to climate-change talking points”

How’s the arctic ice holding up this year?

Tomorrow night is a regional CPC meeting. I am supposed to come with
clear objectives, like having 1/3 new members, raising x amount of
money, etc.

I have done nothing to prepare.

subject Avortement: des ministres voteraient en faveur de la motion controversée; Foreign takeover bids of Canadian firms need ‘rigorous’ scrutiny, Kenney says

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a mild bout of insomnia this morning. I
woke up to pee at 4am and couldn’t fall back asleep, my mind kept
racing through everything (kind of like it used to after smoking pot
or dropping acid). I read some New Yorkers until Clo’s alarm went off
and the day began. Happy Monday! I took a sick day and worked on
tiling the bathroom all day and I still didn’t finish. I’m close
though. Will have the tiling done by Friday, I hope. I made supper for
the girls and didn’t have the time nor energy to go to the regional
Conservative Party meeting. Exhausted now, going to bed.

subject La ministre de la Condition féminine vote pour la motion touchant à l’avortement; Trudeau leadership run raises risk of another Liberal ‘coronation’

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Too busy at work, planning, exchanging emails,
putting out fires, causing others. Louis-Philippe called yesterday
wondering why I had missed the regional meeting. We chatted a bit; he
helped me find the constitution on the website. There are upcoming
deadlines for the amendments to bring to the convention next summer.
The board meeting at SKOL went remarkably well, and was completed i
under three hours to boot. It was Stephanie’s first CA since taking
over from Anne. The Lundeen Machine came over and we shared a roasted
chicken and fries. Picked up a nice piece of plywood to make the
kitchen table but realized after making the cuts at HD that Clo and I
had not squared our plans. Rose got all wound up when we arrived home
and she was more difficult going to sleep; this and the table and Clo
missing Yoga ot discuss the table plans and my choosing to eat roast
chicken all added to us being annoyed with each other. No tiling
tonight; no energy left.

subject Défense nationale: Ottawa retranchera 2,5 G$ du budget d’ici 2015; Back in Canada, Khadr craves normalcy that may never come

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Battered, bruised and full of blisters, but alive. no, I didn’t set myself on fire or fall down the stairs, I grouted the bathroom this past weekend. I’m not very good at it and I’m not pleased with the results; I need to scrape a lot of grout off and even worse, the shower fixtures won’t fit on properly. I managed to find some adaptors to extend the pipes but can’t get it all tightened properly so it doesn’t leak and also it looks like sh*t. I feel like an idiot and now I need to get our landlord to get his $20/hour plumber in to look at it. Faak! I need to get reimbursed soon as I’ve spent close to $1000 on materials in the past month. We’re hoping to get the bathroom functional (and the kitchen counters painted – another story) before we head to SJ on Friday. Road trip! Lots of work to do between now and then. I’ll start by folding laundry and throwing another load in the dryer. Can you believe I only have 1 decent pair of jeans to wear to work?
