subject Première personne accusée dans le dossier des Robocalls; Canada lacks qualified coaches for amateur sports, report finds

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Survived another day of work. Spent most of the afternoon assembling a CALQ grant application. I asked for $10,000 to make a bunch of big-ass frottage paintings on linen and build stretchers for them. It is poorly written in French as I basically copy-pasted from a hastily thrown-together proposal in 2011. I have no optimism but it is fun to keep throwing my foot in the door.

I also called Consumer Credit Adjusters and asked a few agents to be contacted only in writing. I spoke to Leo again, who told me to “conduct myself accordingly” before hanging up on me. That’s the second time they hang up on me! I’m sending them a letter just to be sure I get at least 3 months respite from their calls.

And I am finally into the C-Vote guts, or portal site. Very well-done. Can hardly wait to start calling expired or soon-to-expire #cpc members.

Not much else to report. The kids are good. We were all at the clinic yesterday. Rose still has a small hole in one eardrum and can’t go swimming or underwater until it is fully healed. She has an appointment with a specialist in 3 weeks. Sol has eye drops for his weepy eye. Clo has a prescription. I still haven’t seen a doctor. Been close to ten years now I figure. Need to get my moles checked out, and should do my prostate as well, all that fun post-forty stuff.

Off to bed. Clo and Sol sleeping downstairs. Rose didn’t get up in the night last night but was up at 6:30 this morning. Still, it was the first time in…four months? That I slept the entire night uninterrupted. Felt good.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Survived another day at work, which including a power outage at the 451 building. Had to re-adjust some of the lighting dimmers settings after the electricity was restored. Dropped Rose off at daycare and picked her up. She climbed into bed with me at 3:30 and I was too asleep to take her back to her room. Hopefully this will not set a precedent. She went to bed fine tonight, engrossed in stories by Beatrix Potter. Her current favourite is Squirrel Nutkin, but she asked many, many questions about Timmy Tiptoes.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Rose slept in her bed all night but was up at 6:24; not bad. I can live with early morning wake ups if she sleeps all night. Tonight, however, she had a tiny, tiny piece of chocolate in her yogurt dessert and she was a freak to get to sleep. No more chocolate after 5pm, new rule!

I was thinking on the metro today. Not reading, not listening to anything (I never have headphones in anyway), and watching folks, and thinking.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Rose was up at 6am, but she stayed in her bed all night, so it was OK. This morning I took her to the dentist for her first cleaning. She was an angel. We finished in time for her to join her friends for lunch at daycare. I spent the afternoon prepping and then executing a few paper frottages to send to Judith for her open house next weekend. Also bought a few frames from LL Lozeau. It’s all about presentation, art. Speaking of, Vincent sent me the Quicktime components I need and now I can edit the Big Gull Lake Waterskiing Goalie footage. On top of that, Stacy brought me a big-ass flatscreen TV from deep storage to help with the edits at home. Some assembly required. Off now to watch Thomas Crowne Affair (the not-so-recent remake) with my wife.

subject L’anglais seulement pour un ministre conservateur; Secrecy and ethics cast dark cloud on Stephen Harper’s government: poll

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a black hole weekend; Friday night and yesterday morning were particularly tough, mostly with Rose and her sleeping-not-sleeping. In fact tonight she has only just now possibly fallen asleep. Nope, she is still up. Coming down the hall. Wants more ice (for her bruised shins) and needs to pee. Has already wet her pull up. But now, I think, she is down again. For the night; she must be exhausted! She was up at 6am. I for one am beat! In other news, I framed and wrapped up four frottage drawings to send to Judith via bus tomorrow. And my in laws are coming over for the evening tomorrow. And I had a telephone conference with all the presidents of all the Quebec EDAs tomorrow evening and the agenda looks like it will be a 3-hour meeting, ugh.

Aarg, she is up again and refusing to leave the hallway. What to do?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another Monday. Intense day cleaning and repairing projectors. Dropped off the four frottage drawings in a suitcase to the bus depot. $36 and they’ll arrive tomorrow evening. Visit from the inlaws tonight; they are in town for a funeral tonight for Jo’s godfather. Clo made supper, and is out with her folks and Sol, who still hasn’t crapped in 8 days now. He went 12 days and hasn’t crapped since that big expulsion. Tonight I had a #cpc province-wide conference call, I called in but missed all of it, left my phone on in the studio during Christian Paradis’ opening comments. This was the O de J:

1. Mot de bienvenue
2. Présentation de l’ordre du jour
3. Mot du ministre Christian Paradis
4. Calendrier des activités partisanes
5. Congrès national 2013
6. Redécoupage de la carte électorale
7. Mise en place de C-Vote
8. Production du rapport financier (Élections Canada)
9. Fonctionnement des conseils régionaux
10. Mise à jour des activités de l’Exécutif national
11. Période de questions

Through most of the call I was getting Rose ready for bed. She is still awake, on her second round of Raf. Damn, out of bed again she is. Time to get firm. She wants me to make the hole in her blanket that she “hides” in. I just want to have a shower! Please Rose, go to sleep so I can close Facebook and jump in the shower! I have toothpaste in my hair from this morning it needs to be washed so bad!

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Survived another day of work, following a rather sleepless night. Rose awoke and came bounding down the stairs at 1am. I put her back to bed but she was back down at 5:30, wide awake. She did say something cute as I was trying to get her settled on a blanket on the floor : “I can’t see, I’m all dark”! So now Sol is napping and Clo re-heated Etienne’s leftover chili from Saturday, bathed Rose and put her to bed and she appears to be asleep. I changed film at work today and just before leaving saw a problem with Pacific Sun that I don’t think I can resolve and will tackle tomorrow. After a good night’s sleep (fingers crossed).

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. As you know from your Twitter feed I have been busy editing and uploading some new Everyday Goalie video vignettes. I’m going to apply to OK Quoi?! in Sackville as well as a roving video series at the Camper with Truck. I think I might have solved the aspect-ratio problem I was having with the P2 footage but I really have no idea how. One day it wasn’t working, now it is.

Tomorrow Clo has a doctor’s appointment for Sol. He still hasn’t pooped, we must be at 19 days now? We also want to get his weepy eye checked out more thoroughly.

Rose has been sleeping all night lately! Of course, she is up by 6 or 6:30, but that’s waaaay better than tantrums at 2 or 3. I think it could be the combination of warm milk and keeping her up a bit past 8. I had read stories and tucked her in by 9pm tonight. I’m off soon myself, just going to try to get a quick little water skiing clip sorted.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a day at home working on texts for the Everyday Goalie and getting deep into some video editing. That shit is detailed and time-consuming, don’t let anyone tell you any different. It reminds me once again that artists are crazy hard workers; when we aren’t drinking or going to openings or “fancy galas” we are totally working on art. Especially when we aren’t looking after our kids or working our day jobs.

Tonight after daycare I took Rose downtown to the book launches at SKOL. In the morning Clo took Sol to the doctor for some vaccinations. He’s at day 20 with no poop and the doctor was a bit taken aback. She wants gastro tests. Tomorrow Rose is home as we have an appointment to get her hearing tested. Hopefully her eardrum is all healed so she and Femke can go swimming soon.

Oh and yesterday I spoke too soon; Rose was up twice in the night last night. I think it might be videos before bed. No more of that then! Warm milk and honey: check. No sugar after supper: check. Up until 9pm: check. Run her around half the city after a full day of activity at daycare: check. Hopefully we get a full night of sleep tonight.

On September 9th, Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed an agreement with China, the Canada-China Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (FIPA). The agreement was kept from the Canadian public and Parliament until September 26th, when it was quietly made public, tabled in the House of Commons. No press release. No technical briefing.

Given his extreme attempt at secrecy, it is possible that the the Prime Minister could have succeeded in quietly passing this dangerous treaty into force without the public knowing had Elizabeth May not been waiting and watching for the treaty to surface.

This treaty would give China the unacceptable power to secretly challenge Canadian laws that infringe on its business interests, and Prime Minister Harper planned to ratify it without any public consultation, meaningful debate, or vote in the House.

Although he could have ratified the Agreement months ago, huge public opposition from Canadians of all political stripes and walks of life has caused many Members of Parliament, including many Conservatives of good conscience, to reconsider the wisdom of turning over this much power to a foreign government. We suspect that it is precisely this massive public outcry that has succeeded in forcing Prime Minister Harper to reconsider ratifying this treaty for the time being.

Thankfully, Members of Parliament will finally have an opportunity to vote on this secretive and dangerous Agreement, and we need your help to make sure that all MPs stand with the majority of Canadians who do not want this treaty ratified.

On Monday, there will be a vote on an NDP motion to demand that Canada not ratify the Canada-China FIPA. We strongly support this motion and believe that it represents the will of Canadians.

Currently, both the Conservatives and Liberals have promised to vote against the NDP motion. However, the Liberals have proposed a compromise motion, which we also support and which we believe could represent a starting point for real dialogue and consultation on the Canada-China FIPA across party lines.

Please take a few minutes of your time to call or write to your your NDP and Liberal Members of Parliament ask them to reach a compromise to prevent the ratification of the Canada-China FIPA without ANY public consultation.

Most importantly, please call or write to your Conservative Members of Parliament and ask that they stand up for Canada and vote to prevent Prime Minister Harper from ratifying this Agreement behind our backs. We only have a few days left.

subject «On repart la machine», dit le chef du Bloc québécois; Homeland Security’s proposed new Canada-U.S. border fee prompts alarm in New York

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Sol still has not pooped. Rose stayed all night in her bed last night. We had a lovely brunch with Anne and Laurent. Our clothes are still outside on the clothesline, having survived rain, some hail this morning, then some slight snow and more rain. Have been working on the Everyday Goalie videos in any and all of my “free” time. Here is another CC to fill out the rest of the letter (while I wait for a clip to render):

Dear Mr Harper, Mr Mulcair, Mr Trudeau, Mr Plamondon, Ms May:

I am writing to call on you – and all of your colleagues – to vote to stop the secretive and extreme Canada-China Foreign Investment Protection Agreement (FIPA).

This investor deal would pave the way for a massive natural resource buyout and allow foreign corporations to sue the Canadian government in secret tribunals, restricting Canadians from making democratic decisions about our economy, environment and energy.

Canadians have a right to determine our future, but this agreement will grossly undermine the democratic rights of Canadians, and lock us into an inescapable path of foreign-ownership and resource extraction until at least 2040.

Let’s stop this FIPA and start over with a national conversation that brings Canadians together to make responsible choices about the wisest long-term stewardship of our natural resources.

subject Re: Trudeau’s team tells Al Jazeera he wants “engagement” with Iran

Hi Jenni,

Thanks for the email! I am glad the Conservatives are taking such a tough stance against Iran. Can we put up more sanctions and cut all diplomatic and economic ties with them as well? Maybe we can invade them and bring democracy to the people? Just a thought.

-chris

CHRIS,

We know Justin Trudeau can’t resist telling his audience what it wants to hear, even if it means making different promises to different groups of people – but this interview with Al Jazeera, a state-owned Middle Eastern media organization, goes too far.

One of Justin Trudeau’s top advisors, former Liberal MP Omar Alghabra, told Al Jazeera that Canada needs “engagement” with Iran.

In an exclusive interview with the state-owned media organization, Alghabra said “on the issue of Iran, Trudeau has clearly stated that he is for engagement.”

After news that the RCMP foiled a suspected terrorist plot, which the RCMP said was supported by Al Qaeda operatives in Iran, it’s obvious that these comments are unacceptable – and that Justin Trudeau lacks the judgement to be Prime Minister.

The Conservative government has taken a strong stance against terrorism and in defence of Israel, the only real democracy in the region. We support freedom and democracy in Iran – not the Iranian regime. We even listed the al-Qods force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist entity. Canada needs less, not more, “engagement” with these groups!

Under the strong leadership of Stephen Harper, our government will continue to take steps to protect Canadians and support the global fight against terrorism. And we need your help.

If you oppose Trudeau’s plan to “engage” with the Iranian regime, announced of course on Al Jazeera, can you chip in $25 or whatever you can afford?

Sincerely,

Jenni Byrne
National Campaign Manager, 2011

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived a day off work, and after working from home on some art project proposals, Clo and I went to see the shows at the MAC. I suppose one could say I was “committing sociology” in a sense, as one of the pieces on view was called “This situation” by Tino Sehgal, and involved six performers beginning conversations amongst themselves and any willing audience participant (indeed, the audience is asked directly to engage int he conversation), each conversation beginning from a quote having something to do with the idea of ownership, freedom, disparity of wealth, biology, etc. I would have liked to stay longer, it was invigorating. And the monumental installation Uraniborg by Laurent Grasso was the slickest, smartest, most interesting architectural intervention into a contemporary art museum space I have seen in a long while. I guess you could say that today I committed a bit of culture.
