Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the flight back to Montreal, survived the studio tour, visiting MNO and Tuck, the hot weather, the car, my folks, a hangover. It was a fun day. Really enjoyed seeing my girls and boy again. Had a hectic night ordering Indian takeout the long wait then the food too spicy, but finally now everyone is in bed, and me on the way.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived six years of marriage. Today is our anniversary. We had great anniversary sex.

Did I mention to you that Greg in SJ is thinking of doing a documentary on my infiltration / Dear PM project? And that just a few days ago Louis-Phillip started following me on Twitter? I think his account was hacked because he sent me this direct message today:

OMG, who the fuck shared this of me. I am so pissed.apps.facebook.com/54785225858736…

That doesn’t sound like him. The link is a dead-end (or probably malware or a virus, great).

Big week at work ahead, so off to bed early.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another day of work, the weekly DHC meeting, then a board meeting at SKOL in the evening. Survived the metro ride home. I left my bike at work as Rose is now cycling to daycare so I am using the single bike lock for her bike (no room inside). Complicated! Tomorrow Clo and Sol head to Gatineau for RCAAQ board meetings and Rose and I will hang out together. Fun times! She is back into listening to the soundtrack for Nightmare Before Christmas, and wants to dress as Jack the Pumpkin King for Halloween (but wearing a princess dress with the jack o’lantern). The Everyday Goalie funding campaign is almost at exactly halfway with 27 days to go. Also we shortened our trip; we’ll be gone 10 days in total instead of 2 weeks. We both feel we’ll miss Rose too much!

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Survived another week of work. Rose and I slept in this morning, she was up multiple times between 3:30-5, which is the worst time to wake up as it is seems to really sap my energy in the morning. Claudine and sol were home in time to get Rose after daycare while I went to the Olympic Stadium to pick up all the Color Me Rad race kits for Les Zebres, which included Joanne, Nataniel, their friend Sonia and myself. The race is on Sunday. I cannot say I am looking forward to it but I will try my best to have fun. Tomorrow is Dorian’s birthday party and then Clo has plans in the evening so I will put the kids down and try not to get sucked into Facebook, but rather read A Hundred Days of Solitude, which Claudine bought for me. She was astounded I had not yet read it. Who has the time anymore? I’ll tackle it tonight. She’s already in bed, went down right after supper she was so exhausted. I may grab a shower before bed, there is not much on Facebook of note, except maybe articles wondering if you might retire before 2015. And photos of my mom’s wounds from a recent cycling spill.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived Color Me Rad. It was a strange, strange event. I noticed that there seemed far more girls than guys signed up. Why is that? Is getting pelted with coloured cornstarch powder more appealing to females? I have some doubts as to how much this run helps its partner charities, and I also feel a bit perplexed as to what the big deal is, but anyway, I went to support Nathaniel and Jo, but then Nathaniel was being a stubborn 6-year old and fussed and skulked and snitted between each colour station. He liked the coloured powder, he just didn’t want to walk or run to get to it. We ended up walking about 3k of the total, and in the end he said he had fun. This afternoon I cleaned up the backyard a bit more and set up the hammock. Had steaks on the barbecue and then after putting Rose to bed decided to cut my hair, and then my clippers crapped out before I was finished. So now I have a ridiculous haircut just in time to start a busy work week tomorrow.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived getting a stupid traffic ticket for riding my bike in a no-bike construction zone (where they are building a bike path of all things). And where thousands of cyclists pass per day. It was a total sting operation, and I saw 2 more groups of SPVM goons targeting cyclists. I have been tweeting back and forth with some publicist about the fines. My friend Jen got a ticket as well and started a thread on Facebook on which I have been ranting as well. Here is the latest:

I’ve been mad about my 15$ ticket + $12 ‘costs’ and $14 ‘contribution’ all day now. Those controlling our walking lobotomies in uniform decide that they are going to make a shit-ton of money one day by hanging out in areas where thousands of cyclists pass and give out tickets for rolling stops, driving on sidewalks, passing through construction zones (the irony there is that the construction is to build a specific bike path!!!). As if all these fines and tickets are really going to improve cyclist safety. For me, it’s brought my level of respect for the police force to an all-time low. And I thought it couldn’t get much lower after the way they handled the student protests last year. I can hardly wait until they start wearing camouflage and red ballcaps again as they go go on strike for some stupid reason just to see how much more idiotic these morons get. Does the SPVM actually catch real criminals or do they just beat up protesters and ticket cyclists? Not entrapment, just Assholes.

Sarah R. came over for supper, I barbecues sausages, then she and Clo went to a movie. Clo had a mostly good day with the kids but Rose had an ear test and missed her nap and got a little wacky and had a crisis and then tonight just would not got to sleep, kept getting out of bed over and over, it was like she was on drugs she was so exhausted. So now I am more exhausted than usual and should be making goalie cards or posting links or doing some work but might just go to bed early.

I was home at midnight, not too drunk either. The Hotel California limo was a big hit. Also, despite the rejection of Everyday Goalie for the OK Quoi Festival this summer, the short film was selected to show as part of Truck Gallery’s Camper: Bike-In Cinema on June 27. subject Ottawa a déboursé 700 000 $ pour une collection sur la Guerre de 1812; Conservative senators ready to sit into July to clear backlog

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. And so, presumably, is On Kawara. A friend posted a link to this explanation regarding On Kawara:

I have a secret. I’ve been carrying it around with me for a couple of months now. Actually, I haven’t carried it around. It’s been living in a cabinet in my living room. I am now going to reveal this secret because it’s gone a tad bit further than I expected it to.

The conceptual artist On Kawara has 101 followers on twitter at the time of this writing. I have only 20-something. But I am On Kawara on twitter. Or rather, On Kawara on twitter is a Perl script that gets automatically run once a day on a server in a cabinet in my living room. I haven’t done anything to publicize his activities on twitter. All he does is announce, “I AM STILL ALIVE” once a day. He doesn’t follow anyone. Yet, somehow, it seeped out into the twitter community. The “Perl Net::Twitter” client name should be a dead give away.

The interesting thing about this (and my original reason for launching it) is that it blatantly negates the whole idea behind On Kawara’s “I AM STILL ALIVE” messages. Whereas those did indeed confirm that he was still alive, this doesn’t. It’s an automated process that he doesn’t even control. Were he to die, he would continue to announce “I AM STILL ALIVE”, everday, on twitter. So it really does two things; by falsely confirming that he is alive, it casts doubt on the issue but it also keeps the notion of him actively announcing that he is alive, alive.

So what may sound like a simple prank is actually pretty complex and gets more complex the more you think about it.

Anyway, I’ve now released the On_Kawara twittering script as one of the Microcodes at http://pallit.lhi.is/microcodes

This throws a new wrench into the works. The script is posted exactly as it is, complete with the username and the password. I can’t even begin to imagine where that will go.

best r.
Pall Thayer

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the first day back at work after a long weekend, so it feels like surviving a Monday, even though it is Tuesday. I survived our weekly meeting where not one official word was said about the fact that JZ the chief curator is leaving to become director of the MACM (!!!???!!!) so I had to corner Cheryl afterwards to discuss, but again, since all the management (and their assistants, apparently) are all in Venice this week there will be no movement on planning, hiring, job-sharing, job-definitions, contracts, what-have-you, for the next three weeks. And we go on vacation in four. So there was some bitterness at work today. Do you ever sense that at work? That internal communications are blocked and HR is non-existent? Only six days left in the #everydaygoalie Venice campaign, I know you have been busy with the flood and all so this is just a gentle reminder.

Today the weather was a bit crap, high pressure, humidity, some cloud, some rain, just overall blah. I took Rose and finally exchanged the screen door for the proper size, then we borrowed what I thought was a de-humidifier from DHC but once we got it home I realized it was a humidifier, and that is almost the last thing we need.
