subject Ebola: le Canada tient à rassurer la population; Timspiracy! Is Tim Hortons ripping you off?

Dear Stephen, I am still alive. I survived a little road trip to the Tar Sands. Excuse me, Oil Sands. Coincidently, I ran into my old junior high buddy Matt, who helped me on the shoot and bought me supper in Fort Mac. He was my first friend in NB but we haven’t seen one another since 1997. He quit his job at Irving and came out in August, and was working nights but had Monday off before starting days on Tuesday. Anyway, we tried initially to get a shot from right atop a dried tailings pond but it was far too dusty and windy; I was worried about the camera. I wouldn’t have had time to gear up anyway; as the security agent told me later, he was receiving “tons of calls” about us from the minute we were out of the car. Lucky for us Suncor has arranged a nice little viewpoint park and so I shot footage in front of a giant excavator and from the buffalo lookout point.

After supper I dropped Matt off at his camp and then hit the road back to Edmonton, but decided to check out Cold Lake in the hopes of finding some in situ pumps to shoot but it was raining by the time I got there and there weren’t really any sights that grabbed me, nothing I could find anyway. So I kept driving to Calgary.

Colin picked me up from the airport. He’s really turned his life around: no more drinking, drugs, he’s in AA, he’s built his life up, met a wonderful woman and they are engaged to be married next year. Wow, eh?

Today I am dropping Stacy’s paintings off at the New Gallery, then maybe grab some Everyday Goalie footage in front of the Saddledome before a short performance at Communitywise space this evening. Maybe I’ll even stop by your constituency office to say hi, or perform out front. Hmmmm. Would that help or hinder my efforts to get the nod as candidate in Papineau? Maybe I’ll just drop off some hockey cards for you.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the flight back to Montreal, the shoot at Lake Louise yesterday morning and Rita McKeough’s performance last night at ACAD. But now everyone is asleep and I don’t feel like writing anymore (I am working on the text for the supper project at Diagonale in a few weeks), I am proposing to work with my mom on a custom quilted net for my Everyday Goalie hockey goal. A few details still need to be ironed out, such as asking her.

subject Irak: les Canadiens au combat pendant six mois; Lagasse: Time for a refresher on the powers of Parliament

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. Sorry I didn’t write last night. Things got a little out-of-hand with the sketchup file of our kitchen. Post-Judith visit we are now considering knocking out the upper level and stairs to the kitchen, bringing it all down to the same level as the rest of the RC. Still playing with tiles, too. And now we might not bring down the load-bearing wall at all, which kinda makes the $500 I owe to the structural engineer seem a bit much. On the plus side, Denis finished painting the fences and all the front doors, and our neighbours all liked the light pink and went with the same colour. He just cost twice as much as I thought it would be, whatever, it’s only money, and you can’t take it with you, and I think the work made him happy.

Oh, I am meeting Michel tomorrow evening to discuss my application to become candidate in Papineau. He is president of the selection committee and wants to go over the forms as well as hear my platform. I still have no platform.

Swimming lessons went well this morning, Sol conked out in the car on the way home but Rose is fighting her nap, even though we plan to go see Femke for supper, and napping is supposed to be a condition. Arg, I hate it when kids call your bluff.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another Monday, also my first day back at work in 7 weeks! Hard to believe. It was busy day, I added dimensions to the sketchup of the screens layout and then physically marked them out on the floor in G5 with Steve. G5 now has a massive new ceiling that if having a blackout fabric stretched over it, so Richard will get his black ceiling after all. The structure will also provide numerous points of anchorage for the screens, projectors and speakers, and the cabling can run above out of sight.

Tonight after getting the kids from daycare I swung by and ordered the 24″ gas stove and 24″ fridge from Corbeil. The fridge won’t be ready until end of November. Clo found us a place to live nearby starting November 1 so things are moving ahead!

After supper I met Michel at our CPC Papineau “office” (The Tim Hortons on the corner) to discuss my candidature. There are three magic numbers: 25, 100 and 18,000. The first is the minimum of Papineau CPC members I need to have sign my nomination papers. The second is the amount of Papineau residents need to sign my papers for Elections Canada. The third is the approximate amount of money I need to raise to run the campaign. He mentioned that a number of years ago your own constituency office lent Papineau $9000 to help in a campaign. Could we hit you up again in 2015? Michel also gave me a bunch of CPC swag, some of it dating back to 2004, as well as some documents, a couple flagpoles and some Harper posters. Fun!

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another day at work. The techs arrived from Germany and we had a delivery from Pacart for all the equipment and photos so there was lots to do. Don’t worry, I didn’t lift anything. Worked ’till 5, picked up some groceries and made supper and then put the kids to bed. Worked on Sketchup re-designs of the kitchen, on version 7 now, this time with double-stacked cupboards to extend to the ceiling.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another day at work. Dropped kids off to daycare in the rain and picked them up after work. Sol quite enjoyed playing in the puddle outside daycare; he didn’t want to leave it, in fact. The kids had a late supper, watched the second half of Frozen (as a mid-week “exception” for Rose, for good behaviour), and went to bed relatively early. I fell asleep with Rose, but woke up with enough time to fiddle with the Sketchup of the kitchen, fart around on Facebook (I am trying to decide on a painting purchase to celebrate the purchase of our apartment from an old nscad colleague Byron, who is a plein air painting machine). It would be nice to go to bed early, and maybe have some intimacy with my wife, which is a bit tricky lately as those kids always end up in our bed at random hours throughout the night.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another day at work. Helped move and unpack some VB pictures, didn’t do too much in the RM video installation. Had a crazy time with the kids after daycare as Clo had dropped the kids off with her bike, so I half-carried, half-dragged Sol home, as all he wanted to do was throw stones into a puddle off the curb in front of daycare. We stopped at the bakery and after a snack he was much better and stopped screaming. Grabbed some beer for the visit with Marcello, where we confirmed the new kitchen renovation changes as well as a start date: November 3. Yikes! Coming up fast.

Still unsure which painting to buy from Byron: Morning Burn or Time Gate. In his words: “Time Gate is charming and a bit softer, and Morning Burn is more powerful and has stronger color. Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived Friday at work, and going to IKEA with the kids and Victoria after work, for supper and some shopping (mostly for some things for work) and of course to kill time (Clo was at a cocktail for German Night at the MBAM and then out with Kent and then a party) so when I got home with the kids it was basically bedtime and I fell asleep with them which is why I didn’t write to you.

Today I took Rose to dance class then had a meeting at Diagonale to discuss La Soupée which is NEXT WEEK and then I went to work and helped hang Love Is The Drug which is HUGE and we still have a few millimetres adjustments to make before attempting to put the frame up over the three panels, and now there is a power supply problem with the amps for The Enclave and we may need an electrician to come in on Thanksgiving Sunday to wire up some 240 from the panel. Meanwhile tonight I am wrapping gifts and Clo is representing at Roberts’ b-day party. Tomorrow is swimming lessons then a Buddhist ceremony for Daniel and then off to visit the cousins and celebrate birthdays and Thanksgiving.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the opening, and more remarkable than that, the unexpected night out before. After working until about 9pm I went to the VIP dinner at Phoebe’s house with the German techs. We ended up at a random bar in Old Montréal until far too late, and I drank far too much, and was far too sick unexpectedly at 4 in the morning. My extraordinary life partner cleaned up after me, and I stumbled to the basement to catch more sleep while she changed sheets. I could barely get to work for 2pm the day of the opening. I came home for supper and to help a bit with the kids, and went back to catch the tail end of the opening and help shut the works down in The Enclave, and met up with Karen Tam, and we went for a bowl of soup (beef!) at Cristal in Chinatown before re-joining the after-party at La Mal Nécessaire, which is a fancy yet simple re-designed tiki bar in Chinatown, but I only stayed until 12:30.

Today I survived a partial day of work, dropping the kids off at daycare, working the morning, then hanging with Ron the German tech and Richard Mosse at the Hotel Gault lobby for a few quick beers. Then I went home, stopping at my bank to sign for an extension of line of credit. Oh, and on the phone I confirmed the order of our new kitchen window and patio doors.

Now I’m editing together a compilation of my goalie videos for La Soupée event on Saturday. I am installing tomorrow.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived La Soupée, though I didn’t win. I hope my mom is not too disappointed, but as I hadn’t really developed a concrete plan with her I can’t imagine she will be. It was a fun evening, it was super well-organized and all the participants seemed to have a great time. Jesse and Andréa came over to babysit and Clo went out with Pip. She was originally going to go out with the AC crew but there were too many cancellations due to unexpected deaths and funerals.

On top of the quilted hockey net, the Everyday Goalie and the Dear PM project I did speak to a few people about the CPC Infiltration project. Speaking about the project is still the most I have done to advance it these past few weeks. In two days we will be less than 1 year before the 2015 elections and I can start to sell year-long party memberships to try to boost my minimum required 25 signatures for my nomination.

It was too cute this morning: I took Sol outside, well-bundled up in rain gear, so he could play in puddles. He did not tire of this, finding a whole slew of different ways of projecting himself into the same puddles over and over again.

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived swimming lessons this morning, which also involved lots of traffic detours in the Plateau as unbeknownst to me there was the Parc Lafontaine run so many roads closed and of course I needed to pick Claudine up in the centre of it all as I was picking her up from Pips’ after they had been partying all night. Somehow we made it to swim classes in time. The kids both loved their classes and we went to a new café nearby for lunch that had a great play section for kids. Sol loved the carrot soup. Had a lazy-hazy afternoon, attempted a family nap but the kids slept mostly in the car the way home. Had to leave Sol sleeping in the car and take Rose to go pee at the Hyatt; I showed her the potted plant in the lobby where she peed a couple years ago after a Jon Knowles opening. Claudine was getting her biennale passport from the MAC. Anyway, the day slid into evening, SRoberts came over for supper, leftovers from last night’s paté chinois – which consisted of some ground beef mixed with lentils, but good meat, kind meat, at least meat killed somewhat kindly – and some red wine and after putting the kids to bed my evening has consisted of video editing and facebook. Hoping to get the Alberta Everyday Goalie video up this week. Don’t know what to do about the sound just yet. Original sound recordings unusable. Maybe a Neil Young tune?

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived another Monday, another day at work. I didn’t accomplish much, I think I am still a little rusty. I did decide on which of Byron’s paintings I want to buy and put $400 down on a great little closeup of wild grass, called Wild Grasses, and sent him an email transfer. I consider it a housewarming present to ourselves.

Picked the kids up from daycare, made a tofu stir-fry for supper, put the kids to bed early and Clo and I went over the Sketchup design of the kitchen re-design and started an IKEA kitchen planner but it doesn’t like me.

I think I might have resolved what to do about the soundtrack for the Alberta video; instead of having a couple Alberta-related songs, I stretched Neil Young’s Four Strong Winds out to almost ten minutes, so it sounds super weird, and looks even weirder with the goalie in the landscape. Clo feels I should produce my own sound and maybe I’ll see if there is something I can do with the original footage but meantime this is a quick and easy fix.

Chocolate?) and myself bouncing from bed to bed unable to sleep either. Needless to say it wasn’t a super-efficient day at work. Ran into Kim and Jean-Michel after work and offered to take Thomas for a supper playdate so they could get a few things for their life, seeing as they just had a baby a few days ago. It is easy to forget how small a newborn is! The kids enjoyed playing tag and getting all wound up. I fell asleep with Rose and just work up to have a shower and go to bed. Clo has gone out to Biennale-related events at the Parisian Laundry. I’m planning to go see Ben Frost tomorrow at the Sala Rossa, and have a new babysitter lined up to come over once the kids are in bed. Ben did the haunting soundtrack for The Enclave, he travelled to the Congo with Richard two or three times. Crazy, that story, that place. Over 5-million dead since 1998! And hardly a peep in the media.

Uh-oh, she’s up….and wow! peeing on the toilet by herself!!! And even better: back to sleep no fuss, no crisis, no requests for stories about the Smurfs or Woody and Buzz or Frozen or Star Wars! My little girl…growing up!

Dear Stephen,

I am still alive. I survived the Terrorist Attack on Ottawa, mostly due to the fact that I was at work, in Montréal. Gave a tech tour to the preposées, cleaned up a bit, organized my calendar, left work early to get the kids and bring them to UQAM for Graeme’s opening, which was lots of fun, if not a bit hectic trying to keep both eyes trained on two kids often running in opposite directions. Didn’t help that many of Graeme’s sculptures were very low and basically miniature houses, buildings, objects that must have been SO tempting; given all that, the kids were pretty good. They liked the player piano piece the best, and climbing and jumping off the bleachers. Jumping into my arms. Took the kids home via metro for supper, which consisted of Portugese-style chicken from Roses’ “favourite restaurant” – the one on Jean-Talon that had a fire last year, and where she hasn’t eaten in over a year. Then got the kids in bed and asleep just as Luisa, a new babysitter, arrived. I met Clo at Sala Rosa for the Ben Frost show but he totally pulled a diva and cancelled at the last moment, claiming that the sound system would compromise his music. So we went home earlier than expected. Today I only worked the morning, doing lighting tests and changing lightbulbs, then went to physio, then had a massage. My back as been killing me lately. Tomorrow I am off to IKEA to choose the cabinets.

It took all day, as I finalized the selection using the IKEA-friendly 3-D modelling software, but mostly waited long periods for staff to help. Ate a dry and tasteless lunch of salmon at 3pm. Became a member of IKEA family, which hopefully will give us discounts on future purchases and is not in fact initiation into some crazy global cult. We “earned” $600 in gift cards with the purchase of our IKEA kitchen. I hope Marcello can get it all together properly; the boxes will be delivered next week. I was worried that I would be caught in the second Hell of traffic but the drive home was not bad at all; I must have missed rush hour. Put the kids to bed after Clo made supper and then she went out to the closing night of Phenomena. I’m reading about Ebola in the New Yorker, which makes for a terrible bedtime story.

The kids have kept us quite busy throughout the weekend, what with dance classes Saturday and swimming classes this morning. We ate again at this lovely little café near the pool, Sfouf or something like that. Tasty soups and Lebanese-style tartines, and a great big play area for the little ones, which Sol adores. Clo had a yoga course this afternoon so for me it was all naps, a surprise visit from Drew, pumpkin carving with Rose, a quick jaunt to the market for fish and veggies, supper, then a protracted bedtime, then when the kids were asleep I whipped down to Diagonale and packed up the goalie gear and installation. Also changed a few more light bulbs. The kids were up all night again: Rose threw a fit going to bed, then came into our room at midnight and threw another fit so I left her with Clo and went into Rose’s bed, then Sol came up there, then Rose came back so I left them together in her bed, then they squabbled and Clo finished off the night with the two kids in Roses’ bed. It’s been a roller-coaster of sleep deprivation lately. Alma told me today how good and calm Rose is at daycare and how well she sleeps at naptime! But Sol is the inverse: he is starting to hit and bite. Today he hit another child twice because he was crying! I hope he is not a bully. Oh, also today at work I called IKEA to cancel 4 of the 15″ cupboards to replace with 18″, but it had to be done in-store, so Clo went tonight. I need a break from that place. He didn’t seem to be in pain but he was not doing anything with it, just letting it dangle in a way that seemed very peculiar. And I don’t know if this is just normal for emergency room access or if there was something else going on but we checked in at 1pm and my dad met me at 2 and then he left at 5:30 and Clo came at 6 and then she finally saw the doctor and had x-rays and then was home with Sol by 9:15. They think maybe he had dislocated his elbow, but the tests were inconclusive. In any case, he was a champion, was super-cute the whole time, and had his bottle and was asleep before his head hit the pillow. His arm seemed a tad bit better before bed; we’ll watch it for 48 hours to see if usage returns to normal, otherwise it’ll be another visit to a hospital, right in the middle of boxes and packing and moving to the temporary apartment. Tonight I snuck in quick visits with our co-owners to sign letters of permission for our application for a building permit, which I will try to procure tomorrow. Our IKEA cabinets will be delivered tomorrow morning; I tried to delay to next week but it would have cost an additional $150. We’ll stack them in our bedroom. Sol’s elbow became progressively better during the day so that it was back to normal by the time we picked him up from daycare. My parents continued work on filling boxes and my mom made a soup while I prepared documents for the work permit, which I received shortly past lunchtime. I was worried it would be difficult to get but all my papers were in order I just needed to pay $160, but we have a permit! It feels so legitimate. Then I made two runs to pick up all our tile, as the kitchen floor will be cement tiles and they are heavy. Had a bunch of friends over for Halloween: Luneva and her folks, Thomas and his folks and new sister, and Amélie and her folks, and my folks, and we had soup and breads and dips and beer and the kids gorged on candy and in the end watched most of Finding Nemo. We’ve decided to move into the temporary apartment tomorrow, as it will make the rest of the packing easier. Also, we have a rat. I bought traps and poison today but hope that post renovations the rat will have moved on to greener pastures.
