subject Le Canada appuie les manifestations pour Boris Nemtsov; Harper needs to learn to oppose violent Islamism without stoking xenophobia
Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the weekend, Nuit Blanche, Talk Show, karaoke and more Harry Potter. Friday Clo and I had an appointment at the National Bank to apply for a mortgage line of credit. The director of the bank seemed to think this would be no problem. We are asking for $25K. Clo’s plan was to charm him, even showing him pictures of the apartment renos thus far. Before it is finalized they need to re-send another inspector to re-evaluate; if we can get the apartment in the $310-$315K range there should be no problem. After the meeting we ate at the Pickup, then got the kids, then Rose had an appointment at the optometrists on the corner (excellent vision, no problems), then we ate something and watched Harry Potter 2.
Saturday morning Rose missed her final ski lesson because she was feeling sick, and then threw up on the floor beside our bed. She has good reflexes, better than I. She was feeling better after vomiting so we all piled into the car and drove out to Dorval and I picked up the karaoke machine from Frank and dropped it off at Skol. Found a sweet parking space right in front of the Belgo and so we spent the rest of the afternoon in the Quartier des spectacles enjoying the Montréal en Lumière activities, such as the Ferris wheel and some luge sliding. Stopped at Artexte too, for hot chocolate and Rose played some board games with Colette who happened to show up just after we did.
Saturday night was Nuit Blanch. After supper I suited up (in my only suit; I found my ties, BTW, which had been missing in the basement since the renovations began) and headed back downtown. Finding parking was tricky. Set up karaoke at skol and hosted until 11:15, then went up to SBC to appear on the Talk Show with some members of les Entrepreneurs du common. We discussed the monument to the victims of communism and their proposed anti-monument to the victims of liberty. I proposed a third, a monument to the victims of capitalism, and pledged that if elected these monuments would be amongst my first priorities. Then I was back to skol for karaoke until 3. The humidity in the small gallery from all the people crammed in and singing, and the windows open, caused some of the artists works (digital prints on photo Arches paper laminated to plywood) to buckle; she was trying to smooth them out when I left. It was obvious we brought in less money this year; Belgo security was tighter, the lineup outside to get in was longer, there were few people in general and of course now everyone is trying to sell food or drink, so I think this event as a fundraiser is over-saturated. Got home at 4:30.
This morning we had swimming lessons, then I dropped Clo off at work, the karaoke machine back to Frank, and while waiting in line to have the car washed received a phone call from (I think) Marc-Olivier Fortin, congratulating me on the nomination. Except that my phone told me the call was coming from the Phi Centre, so I thought it was a tech pranking me…except that his schtick seemed authentic, so now I am just puzzled. What was he doing at the Phi Centre and why did he call me from there?
Arg I have to finish a small (4″x4″) watercolour and Fedex it to Winnipeg for the Plug-In ICA fundraiser, asap. I shall do this now before I fall asleep. Kids were down and asleep by 8:15 tonight!
Woot-woot, I’m up to 406 followers on Twitter.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived another Monday. Worked on plans … I am getting good at these plans, if I do say so myself. The content at times is gruelling, meaning that I am not necessarily attached or enthused about the project, but I do try to make the plans as detailed and clear as possible.
In other news, I was contacted again by CTV to appear tonight on Power Play, but again Marc-André recommended that I am “unavailable”. I may bring this up at the AGA and see if I can get my EDA board to allow me to do it, haha! That would be awesome. I did receive the $1000 back from the Conservative Fund Canada, except they mis-spelled Claudine’s name as my official agent. Please note that it is Hubert spelled with a U, not an E as in Chantal Hébert.
KIds were in bed before 8 and asleep by 8:30. Had to recount Harry Potter 1 again to Rose.
What I am reading on the Internet tonight: stuff about Mathieu Lefevre which makes my blood boil: the trucker who killed him has not had his license suspended, and apparently isn’t even sorry. I hope karma grabs that ass by the balls and squeezes them flat. Slowly.
Also reading more light-hearted fare about an upstart gallery in Toronto called 8-11, and a great site about art and debt called The Artist as Debtor: The work of artists in the age of speculative capitalism http://artanddebt.org/. And now I’m going to go to bed and tackle more of Infinite Jest. The whole family quite excited about our upcoming vacation to NB.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. Survived work. Survived sending my little 4″x4″ artwork to Winnipeg via Fedex for the Plug-In ICA gala. Survived daycare dropoff and pickup and supper. Survived playtime and storytime and bedtime. Now am cleaning kitchen while packing and getting house prepped. Rose was sad after supper because she wants to go on vacation (she has been VERY excited) but was sad to leave our house all alone. What a cutie! Anyway I had best finish packing, we’re out the door by 6:30am tomorrow. Louis-Alexandre is going to drive us in our car.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the early morning ride to the airport. We almost missed our flight due to a traffic light that was out at the start of the 520. Louis-Alexandre drove us; it was a bit tense at the end, rushing through security and running to the gate. Rose was so, so excited to take a plane and visit her nana and papa. Sol was good on the plane but a tad underwhelmed; I’m not sure he quite grasped what was happening. And it is true, NB has a lot of snow. We were outside prepping the toboggan run even though the temperature was warmer than it has been, warm enough in fact to make a snowman, which we did, and as well I began digging a series of interconnected snow trenches because there is just so much snow! And now I have 409 followers on Twitter and I am ready for bed.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived a visit to see ice caves in the middle of the forest in Midland, NB this afternoon and then the drive to and from Fredericton for the artist talk at Gallery Connexion. The artist fee was more than I anticipated, which is great! My folks also gave me a birthday gift of some $ that was more than expected, so all this helps cover the costs of the flights, luggage (no free checked baggage with AC anymore), interest on our various debts, etc. Anyhow, I had fun with the talk, they recorded it and could have it up on their website soonish, though they offered to hold tight on it until after the election, but at this point I figure what’s the worst that can happen? Anyway, I’d go on but Rose has come down twice now and claims she can’t sleep so I’m going to go up with her and fall asleep with her; she wants me to cuddle with her. Goodnight!

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. Survived the party at happinez, which was lots of fun, saw old friends and hung out drinking wine and eating cupcakes that Judith had ordered that each featured the shopping cart image from our wedding. Spoke with Mel the mayor and Mark and Barbbarbbarb about the candidacy project. Apparently most people read the TJ article very straight, and don’t quite make the connection that it is an extension of my art practice. Today we slept in (no kids here), and eased into the day writing a review for Marcello on Trusted Pros, then I dropped some MDMA for the first time in my life and enjoyed very much the clean, clean high. Felt very, very loving and connected to my friends and family. Enjoyed listening to music. It felt like a real vacation. A strange new experience and one I hope to repeat again in the future. We tried to watch Interview with a Vampire (because for some reason it had come up in conversation) but had to turn it off after twenty minutes. IT IS SO BAD! How was that film ever popular? Anyway, now I think I have mild insomnia. Maybe I’ll watch some youtube before heading to bed.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the flight home. Sol was OK, on my lap the whole time, he was obviously tired but didn’t sleep until in the car on the way home. L-A picked us up. It was nice to be home, the weather is amazing, but we miss the friends and family surrounding us the past week and both Clo and I are a tad stressed about all the work that await us. Well, her more so than I, but I also have election preparedness and other art things to worry about. The Papineau AGA is scheduled for Thursday, Yannis emailed me twice tonight wanting my number so we can talk about it. He’s called me at least twice before, and my number is in my email signature. Is this a good sign for someone who is the regional organizer? Michel called to confirm his presence, and Jerry will be there as well. No-one else has yet to rsvp.

He is working for a small online Nova Scotia based news company and wants to do a story on my candidacy, but I told him to ask Marc-André directly. Then I spoke with Yannis and he asked if I had a Twitter account of Dear PM and I said yes and he asked about the “I am still alive” messages that I am sending you all the time, and I explained that it was part of a long-standing art project and then he asked if I would stop, as it wasn’t becoming of a candidate to do such a thing. I said sure, as I don’t want to push things too much obviously, but now I am at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed with Twitter. I’m sure more than 75% of my 8,000+ tweets were sent directly to your Twitter account. It is kind of why I Tweet, incorporating the On Kawara “I am still alive” phrase with moments throughout my day, geo-localising myself to you to the nearest Tim Hortons. I have quite the collection of photographs of Tim Horton cups that even now Rose is helping my spot and photograph. Maybe I should just switch the direct I am still alive to Tim Hortons? I think that’s the ticket. I’ll try it right now. The off to bed to watch a documentary about film making with Clo.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive, though no longer president of the local riding Association of Papineau for the Conservative Party. I remain on the board but had to step down as I am now candidate. There was a bigger turnout than I expected: Yannis of course, and Michel and Jerry and even Said, and the new president Wahid and two others. The meeting went smoothly, lots of discussion about getting the campaign started, but during it all I felt a bit odd. Odd in the sense that I want to run a campaign, examine running a campaign, but want less and less to go off the deep end, and mostly it is because I am anticipating the potential guilt that may arise if I am outed as not being a “true” conservative. I don’t want to hurt anyone, especially Jerry and Michel, yet at the same time I want our electoral system to be somehow proved ridiculous through it all. And though I share the rest of the EDA’s enthusiasm for defeating Justin Trudeau, and for increasing the conservative vote to beyond 10%, I don’t know how I can espouse actual conservative values with a straight face to the electorate. Maybe going door-to-door with my “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” strategy and discussing first-past-the-post and of course how I would be a better servant to Papineau than a current party leader who clearly has larger aspirations… As you can see, I’m still very conflicted about all this. And what happens if there is a general strike in Montreal this spring? I still need to complete my bio, have it translated, and it all stresses me out at the moment so I think maybe I should rub one out just to relax.

I am still alive. I survived another Monday, as well as another weekend, which included a big rally against C-51. I had the kids for the afternoon with no other plans so off we went. It was a good turnout, around 400 or so, and the march went to Justin’s office on Jarry but we ducked out before we got there to hit Frites Alors! Michael had joined us and I invited him and Emi and Lowell to come over for supper, so the kids had a fun play date. Clo was out for the afternoon and early evening for an opening at Oboro. Sunday was swimming lessons, then errands, a brief stopover at home and then we went to Sarah and Etienne’s for supper and a playdate. It was lots of fun. Today was a busy day at work, I have lots of plans in the air, and also decided to whip up some campaign business cards and go with Jerry to a nomination announcement meeting in Lasalle. He picked me up at 6:30 and off we went, it is a long drive! A good turnout of friends and family for the candidate Zamir Mohammad, also a couple other candidates were present so we took a bunch of photos and we all gave short little speeches. It’s hard to string a coherent speech together with literally 1 minute notice! I could have used one of those teleprompters. In fact, a teleprompter would come in real handy for the campaign. Are those things expensive?

I survived a press conference this morning announcing Steve Shanahan, the municipal councillor for Vrai changement pour Montréal, as #CPC candidate for Ville-Marie–Le Sud-Ouest–Île-des-Soeurs. I met briefly Denis Lebel and had a photo taken with all the candidates present, as well as with him alone, which I posted to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. I then managed to get to work in time for the Weekly Special. Had a nice chat over coffee with Eric afterwards, about culture and music and stadium rock, and then it was lunchtime. It was Café 410 again. There is a problem brewing with the dimensions for the Mr. and Mrs. Andrews Without Their Heads plinth; the platform is not deep enough, and the whole thing might be too small. It cost a lot of time and money to construct, and Numa even painted a fantastic faux shadow along the bottom to make it seem that the floor is level. We should have more news from the curator tomorrow, and can develop a plan of action from there. James is in Arizona so I’m not sitting still as much on the plans. Oh, and Clo had a job interview at the CCA this morning, which went quite well. We shall see, we shall see.

Had the kids alone tonight for post daycare and supper and bedtime. We made les tiges with maple syrup on snow (Rose collected the snow) but Sol wouldn’t finish his before bedtime and wouldn’t let it go, so there was a minor crisis there. I spoke loudly to him and shut off the bedroom light and shut the door and 30 seconds later a plow came by and we distracted each other with that, then he finally sat still to brush his teeth. Speaking of the plow, there was a full-on snow removal operation tonight, for what had to amount to a maximum of 4 inches of snow IN PARTS of the road. Meanwhile, in Atlantic Canada…. sometimes the decisions people make just boggle the mind. Off to bed early tonight. Say no to Facebook!

I’m making them from standard plywood so right now the strips are in the basement with a coat of plaster on them, awaiting sanding and the priming and painting. It might all get done this week. In news related to the campaign, I found very inexpensive teleprompter apps and even a free online browser version. I’m thinking of writing some stump speeches and using the teleprompter in a highly visual and evident manner to highlight the theatrical and performative nature of political campaigning. And tonight the kids were finicky going to sleep. Rose has had a slightly weepy eye for two days, we don’t know what it is, and tonight Sol has a stuffy nose and of course doesn’t quite know how to blow so he has been sleeping fitfully and up a few times since 10:30 or so. He just went down again fifteen minutes ago. I’m going to Google-search some exceptional speeches by Canadian Prime Ministers (to potentially cannibalize for my stump speeches) and maybe watch a few minutes of a a Netflix series called The Story of Film: An Odyssey. As well I survived a last-minute invitation to the official launch of the campaigns of Roland Dick and Anthony Mavros in Laval. Laval! Oh that place. The Palace was packed, there must have been over 500 people there. Fancy banners and flyers and handouts and pins: the associations of Vimy and Laval-Les Îles have some money to toss around. There were snacks after all the speeches and photos but by then it was 8:30 and I was tired and hungry and just wanted to go home. I got a few blurry pics to post on the certainlynotjustin.blogspot.com, which I’ll do tomorrow as my phone froze on the walk back to the metro and now its charging in another room and I’m too lazy to get it. Also I’m hoping to find better fuzzy photos from other sources, like Jason Kenny, who was supposed to be there tonight and sent a nicely-worded email regret. He posted a couple photos on Twitter but I am not in them. Arg! It is late, almost midnight, work will be hectic again tomorrow as deadlines loom and projects spin out of control, I need to shower but there is no more time! Luckily I found an hour on Saturday while Rose was at a birthday party to wait in line at Jeans Jeans Jeans to try on and buy three pairs of commuters to a tune of $250. Now I’m afraid to look at my bank balance.
Changed my signature again, as I found a more graphically-pleasing bilingual logo in the email from Marc-André today. And I received an invitation for a partisan event you will be at this Friday at a golf course in a small town called St. Gilles, near Lévis. Or near a small town called Saint-Agapit. Since I still have a few Fridays off before the Yinka install becomes intense I reserved my spot, and cleared it with Clo tonight. Now I should plan my outfit and probably get a haircut. It’s a 2.5 hour drive, and the event is scheduled to start at 5, so I hope it doesn’t go too late. I don’t want to be stuck on the 20 late at night. But if I can get another pic with you it’ll be gold for the campaign and the project, for sure. Maybe I’ll start posting the one from 2011.
Today over breakfast we heard reports of the plane down in the French Alps. Today was your announcement of a continued, protracted, undefined war with ISIS including air strikes. And amongst it all I feel something that might be akin to a mid-life crisis. I’m not feeling super thrilled with my dayjob, and my moonlighting project as an artist is a mess, all over the map, unclear and ill-defined. I spent most of my Internet time tonight (after feeding kids, putting them to bed, shaving and showering) to messing around with formatting options for my campaign blog (certainlynotjustin.blogspot.ca) and it looks even worse and has no real content, just me photo bombing events. On top of it all I feel a cold coming on. I could say more, but I’ll go to bed instead.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the drive to and from St. Gilles and our little encounter. But first was the meeting at National Bank in the morning and in fact it did not go well. It had been over three weeks since our first meeting with the branch director and we filled out forms and submitted statements and did what we thought was the bulk of the application. We were fooled. He did nothing. We had to start from scratch, and of course didn’t bring anything with us, so we are in fact behind. Clo was so pissed. And then on the way out we ran into the director and she gave him an earful. She was so mad! Anyway we had lunch and coffee at Brooklyn afterwards and spoke about our retirement, and the sad state of the world. Then I hit the road, no time for a haircut. I brought a change of clothes but wouldn’t need it, as I got a bit lost, and ended up driving around in circled for 45 minutes so-so-so close to the Golf Course. Finally got oriented but I missed the first fifteen minutes of your speech. From what I heard it was all the same talking points: jobs, the economy, security, families, less taxes, etc. etc. Anyway, I couldn’t even see you, the room was packed and I had to park on the street the parking lot was full. Anyway I managed to get close enough to get a photo with you but I had forgotten my 2011 pic in the car! Luckily I had Rose’s special ticket she made for me at Daycare awhile back; it made a nice prop, don’t you think? You were quite patient and a bit like Santa Claus, waiting for all those people to get a picture with you. I didn’t have a chance to ask you for a loan from your EDA but it is probably best to go direct to them. Anyway, after the photo I hightailed it outta there, made it back to Montreal in great time, and now Clo and I are going to relax and watch a classic movie: Pulp Fiction.
PS. I listened to the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers in the car on my way to St. Gilles, and thought a lot about just how horrific that suicide plane crash was, and about safety in general. And though you had lots and lots of security personnel around, from the SQ stopping traffic out front, to the dozens of bodyguards and RCMP and special agents, I was never stopped or checked. I know I was on the list (I even have the hot pink wristband!), but what if someone who was on the list wanted to do you harm? It wouldn’t have been difficult to smuggle in a small firearm or knife. I guess one can never ever be truly safe.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. I survived the weekend and another Monday. Saturday we didn’t do much, and Sunday Clo took the car to go downhill skiing with Pip, so I couldn’t take the kids to their swimming lessons. We did go swimming though, at the recently re-opened pool at Patro le Prevost. There was a free swim at 1:30, but the water was on the cold side. Apparently the 2-year, $3.5-million renovations didn’t quite solve the water problems. But heck, it only re-opened three weeks ago, so I’ll give them a break. It’s great to have a pool within walking distance again. I guess technically we could walk to the pool in Parc Ex, on St. Roch, but it is about twice as far, so a bit much on a cold spring day.
Today I met with Erick and Sarah, who are offering the third workshop through Senselab at Usine C on Wednesday called Mouvement of Thought. This is the third instalment titled L’art de l’imposture: (Dé)personnaliser la confiance, and they want me to speak about how I became the Candidate in Papineau, and why. Today we met at Titanic to discuss the structure and content and they seemed keen on my involvement. It’s happening at an odd time, 12:30 in the afternoon, and is scheduled to last 2 hours, as the bulk of it is a workshop directed by Sarah. She does corporate training, and I asked if she could help me with the campaign. We also spoke about the idea I forwarded that perhaps you and the Party are all in on my project, and are playing me as I’m playing you. Kind of a “keep your friends close and your enemies even closer” kind of idea. I wonder if I should write down some of my ideas, I mean in a place other than these letters?
Speaking of the campaign, here is my bio, in both French and English. I’m going to send it to Marc-André and see how long it takes to get posted on the website and maybe get some brochures printed up. I wonder if they’ll edit it?
Chris Lloyd is a visual artist from Saint John, NB, who settled in Papineau with his wife Claudine in 2007. He is a graduate of NSCADU in Halifax and his art, which often touches on political themes, has been exhibited widely across Canada, most notably with solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in 2003 and the Art Gallery of Calgary in 2005. One of his ongoing projects, Dear PM, is comprised of letters he’s sent daily to sitting Prime Ministers since 2001. Chris has worked as an administrator, graphic designer, writer, curator, art-handler and bartender. He is an active community organizer and sits on a number of boards of artist-run centres. He currently works as an exhibition designer and installation coordinator for DHC-ART in Old Montreal. Chris and Claudine have two young children, Rose and Sol. If sent to Ottawa, he’s looking forward to addressing the Prime Minister as often as possible – and hopefully in person – on behalf of the citizens of Papineau.

Dear Stephen,
I am still alive. Survived another day at work. Claudine received a letter from you: asking for money, and her vote. It is a long letter! The content sounds a lot like your recent speeches and media releases: tax cuts for families, security measures, tough on criminals (life means life), 1.2-million net jobs created since the recession of ’08, the economy, values. Etc. I wonder if all the other friends (all artists and Lefties) will get the same letters? I wonder if I can get copies and add them to my growing collection of bizarre correspondences, that now include of course emails from Justin Trudeau (asking for money) and emails from Thomas Mulcair (asking for money) and even former Prime Ministers Paul and jean (haha also asking for money). How will I ever manage to edit the growing mass of correspondences? Anyway, still no word on if my bio was accepted by the Party, I’ll keep you posted.
