Dear Justin,
I am still alive. I survived the weekend, attended a reading circle with David Garneau at Oboro, and hung out with the kids. Trying to figure out how to Indigenize better. Today we attended workshops at Perte de Signale and Rose and Sol had a back-n-forth playdate with Oona. Barb from SJ is visiting and staying overnight, we’re going to Cross Fit together tomorrow morning. I’m still listening to a lot of LCD Soundsystem, their new one American Dream plus older classics, including The Long Goodbye. Working in the studio, making progress on the map paintings.

Dear Justin,
I am still alive. I am surviving Viva. Today I participated in the Usine des Films with Sophie Castonguay, her family and friends, it is (yet another) event sponsored by Montreal 375, making an amateur film in under 3 hours, the concept created by Michel Gondry. Claudine is still working, she had to return sound gear that was used in Ursula’s performance tonight. Rose is at a sleepover and Romy was watching Sol, though he went on a playdate with Julian after daycare. So Energy East is dead? I haven’t been paying attention to news lately, though I am making some progress in the studio.

Dear Justin,
I am still alive. I survived a low key Thanksgiving and I am surviving working a fair bit in the studio, alternating with a couple Cross Fit classes per week (on Tuesday I finally tackled the rope climb, giving myself a nice rope burn on my leg as a result). I asked Judith for suggestions of what to paint and surprisingly she said you! So I made a small portrait and will finish it tomorrow before we do a Facetime studio visit. I’m going to SJ on Friday to attend her 50th birthday party. She says that your proposed small business tax and the fact that Energy East is canned have made you a very unpopular fellow in and around SJ. Does that bother you at all?

Dear Justin,
I am still alive. I survived a whirlwind trip to Saint John and back to attend Judith’s 50th b-day party. Went to Fundy Cross Fit on Friday and partied hard on Saturday, flew back yesterday and started a month-long full- time technician contract at the CCA today. Oh, and had a huge yelling argument with Mel at Thandi’s Friday night over the whole Energy East and your small business tax boondoggle. And at Judith’s party I met a couple who are getting married next September at the SJAC and told me that my show will be up, which reminded me that that show was still booked, despite the fact we didn’t get the 150 grant, and now I am stressed about it, and don’t really want to think about it. Despite the fantastic party, there were moments this past weekend that leave me feeling a bit down: Seeing Robyn for the first time in many years, and how damaged he is, and how precarious some people’s lives are. Maybe I just have the three day blues. I’m going to Cross Fit tomorrow at 7 so going to bed now.

Dear Justin,
I am still alive. But Gord Downie isn’t. RIP Gord. That reminds me that after Judith’s party on Saturday I went Uptown with one of the caterers’ waitresses, a girl named Kat, and a Tragically Hip cover band was playing. They weren’t too bad, either. Nautical Disaster is still my favourite Hip song, what’s yours? I cut my hair after trimming my beard tonight, now for another episode of Bojack Horseman before bed. Are you watching any Netflix series lately? That reminds me that I think it ridiculous Melanie Jolie’s $500-million gift to Netflix, how many Canadian productions will that cover and what happens when the money runs out? Just put a tax on it, in fact don’t we pay a tax on it already? At least provincially, can’t you just direct a tax revenue on Netflix to fund Canadian arts and culture production?
