Dear Justin,

Had another great ski day, I didn’t break my leg or neck even though I followed Sol on almost all the jumps he was making. He even tried some of the really big ones but he wiped out a few times, he just wasn’t going fast enough and didn’t get enough air to clear the flat plateau. Anyway now everyone is in bed early, I don’t know if I want to play SDV or write emails to city councillors about decriminalizing drug possession in Montreal or read a book or go straight to bed. We’re driving back tomorrow and then Jess and I have a special date night planned. I’ll tell you more later.

Dear Justin,

I’m fifty, so are you, how did you celebrate? Do you feel fifty? I tried to keep a low profile, but still ended up having a few birthday related events over the weekend. First, I drove home from Temiscouta with the kids on Friday, making great time. That night Jess and I went to Club L and had a great time, even though she found the participants in the Boardroom as having dead eyes and not enjoying themselves. Saturday I had a meeting with my Ex and Rose’s therapist, where I was relieved and proud to hear just how well-adjusted Rose is, with an emotional intelligence far beyond her 13 years. Then Jess took me out to a surprise supper because suddenly Sarah and Pascal were there and Judith was on the phone via chat but had planned to be there in person but Ellen’s grandfather died so she had to stay for the store. The restaurant was a fancy vegan sushi and was amazing. We danced a bit outside at Place des festivals, there was a DJ. Then Sunday I relaxed, reading This has always been a war, then Jess and I went to a spa. Then out for pizza. And then we stayed up late, late late. And today was the first day back at Vox for the deinstall and so far, so good. Anne-Marie’s show is down and she packed all her photos into her car and left the city by 3pm. I came home, made supper, we watched some Trixie and Katya and now I’m going to play some SDV.

Dear Justin,

Had another long day at work – my body is sore and tired! I keep trying to leave the house early enough to see Rose on her way to school but she is much too early for me. Anyway I’ve been to work and back, I’ve made supper and washed dishes, I’ve played 1 day of SDV and now I think I’m going to go to bed and finish The has always been a war. Hey, I hear that Galen Weston Jr. will be in Ottawa tomorrow to (avoid) answering questions about Loblaws to a parliamentary committee. Will you be there? Will you do anything about the absurd concentration of monopolies in this country? Don’t answer, of course you won’t. You’re the face on the trenchcoat hiding the extraction industry, the telecom giants and the greedy banks that make up this country.

Hi Justin,

We took Crawley to the vet hospital today for a dental cleaning but they ended up taking out most all his teeth. Seems the rotten teeth Sybil suffered from was genetic. It cost over $2K. Lucky Jess is good with her money, and got that grant last year and worked at Blatchford, but that is a big chunk of change to part with. Since I had the car I took the big Christie projector to Applied for them to ship to Christie in Kingston for repairs. We don’t need it back until August, so lots of time. In other news the de-install is going well. I’ll get a paycheck for about $650 for the last two weeks of work. Oh and Rose’s school has prepared an intervention plan to help her with the next few months. I need a shower, but the modem is busted, I’ll swap the new one in tonight, it came in the mail last week.

Dear Justin,

Had a housecleaning afternoon, after a few hours at Vox glueing some wood together for the base of the desk. Started the day playing some multiplayer SDV with Sol, he and Rose are with their mom exceptionally this weekend. Jess is on a video call with her friends and I’m catching up on The Last of Us. Big Saturday night.

Dear Justin,

Welcome to another national time-change fuckery, setting the clocks ahead, proving once again how artificial our concept of time is. Fake, like money. Sometimes I wish time would just stop, or at the very least slow way down. I can’t keep up with my podcasts and the news, things keep happening. No time to process. No time to do the things that need to be down, because other petty things muscle their way in. Groceries. Toothpaste. Medical appointments. Making food. Eating the food. Getting ready for the “work week”. 9 to 5. Cinq à sept. Get your 8 hours of sleep, ready for the 8 hour work day. Activism? Taking down capitalism? Sorry, no time.

Dear Justin,

I had a flash of brilliance at work today while discussing the uselessness of Daylight Savings time. What if, instead of simply adding or subtracting an hour from the day, we compressed the workday hours to correspond to the darkening days of winter? So to give everyone more time with the light, as the sun gets up later and later, the work day – 9am – would start later and later. Always have a good 3 hour buffer. So if the sun comes up at 6:30 then 9am will be 9:30, but if the sun comes up at 7:15 then 9 will actually be 10:15. Same for the afternoon; if the sun normally sets at 8pm then 5pm can be 5pm, but if the sun is setting at 5pm then the end of work 5pm will actually be 2pm. I’m sure there is a way to compress the 8-hour workday into a more manageable and healthy 4-5 hours. Imagine how much happier we would all be! And yes, this is what my BFA got me. That and twenty-five years art-handling and jobbing.

Dear Justin,

Sorry I didn’t write yesterday, I had gone out with Jess to a trivia night a friend of hers is hosting once a month at Hemisphere Gauche. We stayed out later than I should have, am way too tired now to do much of anything. Had a good day at work, a new tech joined us and he is very capable in the shop so everything seems to be falling back into place. For some reason I thought that in my tired state making roasted vegetables for supper would give me time to nap before eating but that didn’t happen. I think I’m going to try to get through one little day of SDV before hitting the hay.

Recent podcasts that have been in my ears as of late have been You are Good, formerly Why Are Dads, Sandy and Nora of course, some Warrior life and Canadaland. Especially Canadalandback.

Dear Justin,

Another satisfying yet exhausting day. How do people who work 40+ hours per week have any time to do personal things or activism? I took the kids to Rockland after work today, Rose needs some new clothes so we went to H&M, not my choice but she didn’t find anything at the Renaissance yesterday. So it was A&W for supper. I’ve been playing a lot of chess with Sol, it’s his latest passion. Anyway the internet is out again, even with the new modem, so I guess it is something else. Maybe the phone cable. I wonder how long eBox and Bell will play hot potato? Gotta love our homegrown monopolies.

Dear Justin,

Had another full day at work yesterday, then had brother Trevor, Tamara and Jordyn over for supper last night, made dumplings from Maison de Mademoiselle Dumpling, then today they came over and I made vegan waffles, then we went to visit Fondation Phi, then ate at Sumo Ramen in Chinatown which was so good, then home and now I want a nap. I think I am still tired from the week, and I have to go back in to work for 9am tomorrow as Diane wants to get ahead on the programming, and I can’t just let her in due to the insurance. I’ll be able to get some things done and the kids can come so it will be fun. Rose wants to watch Hereditary tonight. She looks great with her new baggy black pants and black eyeliner. Skirting that line between emo and goth.

Dear Justin,

Still alive, still kicking, made it through the final days of the install and the opening, all went really well, it was great to have 4 techs so no great mad dash or rush – in fact I left work at 1pm on Friday to take Rose to see her doctor and get a prescrition to help with her ADD. I’d go into more detail but I want to finish reading The Shining tonight and tomorrow the school week routine begins again and as well I start thede-install at the CCA. Busy busy!

Dear Justin,

First day of the CCA deinstall, but we didn’t deinstall nothin”. A big donor wants to see the show tomorrow morning, so we went to the Acron and made room for works to go into storage, then Myles and I went to Vox to PL the baseboard along the bottom of the new reception desk, then we went back to the CCA and started building a crate for one of the works. I was using my car today. I noticed on the weekend that one of Ericka’s mufflers is loose, so I lashed it into place with some steel cable and a bungee cord. If I had a welder and knew better how to weld I’d try to fix it myself – maybe I can connect it with metal duct tape? But I need to get the summer tires on soon so will probably just ask the folks at Touchette to do it. And guess what? The internet is still crapping out, despite the new modem and phone line. The eBox tech told me to take note of the times it drops out and call back in 2 days. Just kick the ball a little further down the road.

Dear Justin,

Do you know what my favourite number is? The answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

Anyway, not much to report really, just worked all day, unclamped the reception desk at Vox, the PL held, I filled the gaps with beige silicon and filled the holes with wood filler – it will need to be sanded and sealed tomorrow or some other day. Because then we were off, back to CCA and finishing a crate and starting the deinstall.

Then getting the kids and making General Tso tofu and listening to the kids with their flutes – Sol is really into learning the flute, to the point where he had to ask a playmate to not disrupt music class so he could learn.

Anyway, just way too much life in the way of getting real shit done, planning the big April 1 protests and sit-ins for Fossil Fool Day, no time to plan any sort of disruption for the CAM gala, who am I kidding I’d rather write you and bitch and moan about my spotty internet, or play SDV, or sit and read – I’m finally tucking into the Grapes of Wrath.

Dear Justin,

So apparently you dropped a budget, the NDP are just going along for the ride, and the provincial NDP just sit idle while the BC C-IRG militarized RCMP arrest and remove 5 Wet’suwet’en land defenders from the Yintah, less than a week before the RBC AGM. You and your ilk make me sick to my stomach. Get the RCMP the fuck off the Yintah and shut down these pipelines already. Why did you have kids if you hate the future so much?
