Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Had the best intentions of waking up super early to get work done this morning, but it didn’t happen. I was up around nine and took time having a shower and making a nice breakfast. Finished reading Nobrow and biked to work just before noon. Opened the galleries and got a bit of work done before I had to run out to attend the HRM Regional C@P Association AGM in East Preston. I tried to get a few board members to go but nobody could. I took a bus to Dartmouth and then a cab to East Preston. I hadn’t realized how far away it was; the cab cost over $20. The AGM was mild and relatively quick. Managed to catch a ride back to downtown Dartmouth with the woman who runs the employment program with C@P. Ran into Dan at the bus terminal. Went back to the Khyber, puttered around a bit then biked home. Made supper, went for snacks to the corner store with Karina and we rented a cheesy movie, Batman and Robin. It tried to be campy but failed. Have to get up early tomorrow to finish hole-punching the email bookwork and get it in the mail for Luis. Andréa is coming in tomorrow to start some of the advance planning for Khyber Kids. I need to get the wheels in motion for the next newsletter, and get the reports ready for the next few board meetings.  What fun.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Tired from a full day. Just finished looking at some on-line movie previews. Trevor called me at work today to make plans for tomorrow night (he is driving us to the theatre for Spider-Man and he and Tamara have a house to look at one the way) and while on the phone he mentioned the latest Star Wars trailer. So I watched all four tonight, but none of them are all that stimulating. The myth runs deep, however, and I’ll probably go see the darn thing anyway. I can’t tell if it is the Star Wars saga itself or Natalie Portman that will keep drawing me to the new episodes; it seems I have no willpower to fight either.

Karina and I went to the preview screening of Atanarjuat- The Fast Runner at the Oxford tonight. Now that was a movie. Grand, epic, full, human, compelling and visually breathtaking. I may try to see it again before it leaves Halifax (which will probably be after a week – the theatre wasn’t even full and the tickets tonight were free). The opening sequences with the shaman and the evil spell were hard to follow. It felt completely satisfying and refreshing. No computer animation! What a treat. Karina and I walked to Freemans for a drink before hailing a cab home. We weren’t properly dressed for the rain.

Andréa started work today in her role as assistant/Khyber Kids co-ordinator. She had to re-enter the Khyber Kids mailing list from last summer as it seems to have disappeared from the hard drive.

Talked to Alyssa Bernard from the Chronicle Herald for quite a bit today. Once we got on the topic of the Arts Council it was hard for me to shut up. She called initially about sending a photographer to get shots of the Closet Gallery installation. She also expressed interest in Riikka’s ‘basket hoops’. Out of all the installations and exhibits we put on, many of which are ignored by the mainstream media, it figures that she would be interested as work which began as decorations for the Gala and is only still up because no one has bothered to take them down yet.

Managed to get up quite early this morning. Finished packing up the bookwork and mailed it off to Luis in Mississauga. It will only arrive on Monday, when they are planning to begin installation; talk about cutting it close! I don’t foresee any problems. Knock on wood.

Am getting a lot of great emails from people from out of province showing their support for the Arts Council.  There was also a very humorous exchange between Instant Coffee and Jane Purves. I’ll include it below for your reading pleasure:

should I remove you because you’ve asked politely, I should I be a politician about this, and write you a long letter, cc it to the press, wherein I state that you receive these announcements cause they’re in your best interest, and despite your complaints and protests, refuse to do a simple thing and remove you from our mailing list?

The only reason you received them in the first place is because of your government’s stupid actions. I thought you’d appreciate seeing what people are saying, and would get some idea of how vibrant the culture is in Halifax and in Nova Scotia in general. Here I am sitting in Toronto, caring; and working, to help promote what you shamefully disregard and take for granted.  At least you have the option of blocking  these emails, yet, what options to the citizens of Nova Scotia have, when they have to deal with such misguided pollicies?

Thank you for your email, Minister Purves’ email address has been receiving a large number of inappropriate emails due to a possible computer virus.  The “please remove” email was sent to a number of emails and yours was included in error.

Minister Purves appreciates hearing from all Nova Scotians.  Please accept my apologies for asking to be removed from your list.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Just came back from watching Spider-Man. It worked for me; the story is close to the original comics, and it is a fun visual romp. Unlike the TV cartoon, the movie makes web-slinging through the streets of New York appear realistically acrobatic. His webs aren’t simply shooting into the clouds. My biggest complaints would be surrounding dialogue and the lack of character development for MJ. The webs streaming from his wrists appears ridiculously ejaculatory in a few scenes, but that method is easier to explain than having Peter Parker build his own ‘web shooters’ from scratch.

Afterwards Karina and I wanted to go somewhere for a drink and dessert and discussion, but we couldn’t settle on a  place to go. Trev and Tamara seem to have an aversion to downtown, and Karina and I practically live downtown and don’t know how to navigate in places like the BLIP. We tried East Side Marios but there was a wait and then Karina saw the peanut shells on the floor so that was out. Eventually we went to Sobeys, bought cakes and went back to Trev and Tamara’s and played Trivial Pursuit. They kicked out butts and then Trev drove us home. Have you ever noticed how the questions in TP are often structured in such a way that one can often answer correctly a question without really knowing anything about it? So trivial.

Before the movie we went to view the house out in Timberlea that Trev and Tamara want to buy. It was full of junk from the previous tenants, who are renting. Two rooms in the basement are dedicated to junk, piled high. The renter actually showed up to change and based the state of the house on the fact that he is divorced and a man. Incapable of cleaning, apparently. Trev and Tamara are hoping that the perpetual disarray will keep other prospective buyers at bay. The house has been on the market for 60 days, but the owners already rejected Trev and Tamara’s first offer. They put in another offer tonight and should know by tomorrow if their offer is accepted.

I don’t quite understand the urge to buy a house in the suburbs. Maybe I never will; if my credit rating ever climbs out of the “never give this person money ever” category and I started to think about owning a home it would definitely be in the city. Or secluded in the country. Or, like in my childhood sci-fi fantasies, on the Moon or Mars. But never, ever in the suburbs. Ever.

There must be some sort of defining characteristic which determines why I don’t operate well in the BLIP, suck at Trivial Pursuit, shop mostly at Value Village, prefer films over TV, CBC or CKDU over commercial radio and prefer biking and walking to driving everywhere. Oh yeah, and spend most of my time in an artist-run centre. Judging from the crowds in the BLIP that characteristic is not something that makes one terribly popular with the masses. Then again, I’m still a sucker for Spider-Man and Star Wars. Is this Nobrow?

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Ended up staying up late last night watching a bad movie Karina brought home. It had Ewan MacGregor in it which is why she rented it. It was called ‘eye of the beholder’. Not in my eyes, it wasn’t. Sort of like a lame version of Crash.

I had spent most of Saturday cleaning the apartment. Weeks go by and the cat hair builds up, it becomes small colonies that then form small cat hair cities. Had gone into work briefly but just to get some files to work on at home, to prepare for the casual meeting today.

Before the meeting today I ran some errands and visited the laundromat. Bought bread at Juliens and a few grocery items at Toulany’s. Not everyone could make the meeting; Heather was camping and Dan hadn’t been properly contacted about the new time. He doesn’t check his email very often. None of us had his phone number on us and it is unlisted.

Sarah, Spencer and Briony and I discussed the gala, other funding initiatives, the supplementary funding, the tenancy issues, hiring assistants and upcoming programming. I want to get them thinking about the AGM, the new business plan and other matters of board governance now, so that we will be better prepared to re-negotiate our lease by the fall.

Spent most of the evening reading about other arts funding organizations on the web. Had not realized that there is a new organization called the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies, the first global organization of its kind. I emailed them to ask if they had heard about the issue facing the Nova Scotia Arts Council.

Watched the Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle. Karina had rented another goofy movie about elderly wiseguys but I left midway through and worked on the small ‘outsider art’ column I had promised to Jane over a month ago. It can be really hard to write about art in 150 words; there is always more that can be said. On that note I am still having trouble finding someone to write about Joel and Tricia’s show. I’ll look harder this week.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

It was a strange day for phone calls, and as a result it is shaping up to be an odd week. First, Rodney MacDonald, the provincial minister of Tourism and Culture, calls me. He was calling me back from the message I had left with his office a number of weeks ago. We set up a meeting for this Wednesday at the Khyber. I figured that would be a good time as the board was already planning to meet.  We’ll give him a tour of the facilities and then grill him about the Arts Council closure. Next I received a phone call from the Law Amendments Committee office and they scheduled me to speak for roughly the same time as dear old Rodney is supposed to be meeting me on Wednesday. I had them bump me back to about 7pm. Then I realized a couple things. One was that I am being job shadowed by Svava’s son Daniel as part of some sort of ‘career day’ thing with his junior high on Wednesday. The other is that on Wednesday Ted is renting the Ballroom to shoot a rock video. It is just not turning out to be the best day to meet with Mr. Minister; the place will be a zoo, so I’m going to have to call him back and re-schedule.

In other news:

Managed to clean up the media centre a bit, with help from Sarah and Andréa. My office still needs a ton of work. Files are strewn everywhere.

The Refugee Clinic gave their notice. Lee met with me and told me they had found a place around the corner, up on Argyle Street. They will move out by mid-month. They offered me all of their large filing cabinets, as they are getting new ones. Now the board will have to decide what to do with that office space. I personally think it would make a great space for an artist residency. I wish I was more motivated and organized to investigate residency programs.

Ate at the Med for supper. No choice; was working late, and hadn’t brought a lunch.

When I got home everyone wanted to watch Teen Wolf. I watched a bit while eating, but had to work on my presentation for the Law Amendments Committee on Wednesday. It is slow going; I am having a problem keeping my arguments to under 10 minutes.

Spider-man is box office champ, earning $114 million in its first weekend. The childhood spidey fan in me feels somewhat pleased with this accomplishment, though the critical adult artist in me feels a bit gyped. After all those years of buying the comics and buying into the story, here I am supporting the latest juggernaut of Hollywood Blockbuster. And to what end, really? I’m $22 poorer.

Dear Mr. Chrétien.

Woke up really early this morning because the cats were fighting and hissing and growling at one another. It sounded quite vicious, but of course once I got up they looked completely normal. The secret life of cats.

Stopped at Staples on my way to work. A sunny, almost warm day today. It was nice to be on a bike. Bought paper for the photocopier at work.

Called Rodney MacDonald when I got into the office and cancelled our Wednesday meeting. He wasn’t in so I had to leave the message with his secretary. He hasn’t called back yet to re-schedule. I hope he does.

Worked on upcoming programming descriptions, the newsletter template and invitations for the next shows. Spoke to Fern about volunteering and establishing some design protocols.

Karina came by for lunch and we went to I Love Sushi. I was able to get away because Scott is looking after the media centre while Lucas is in Montréal.

Sue came by to pick up the art she had bought at the gala and we talked about the Law Amendments. She is scheduled to speak after I am. Hopefully there will be more speakers with her experience and precision; I am still muddling through my presentation. Received a nice email letter of support from Art Metropole today, but it showed up in my Inbox with another email tacked into it. Sort of like what happened in The Fly; I think 2 emails just got merged together. It’s a bit odd to see. I wrote back and asked for a new email; I want to use it in my presentation.

Karina and I walked to Sobeys after work and stocked up on vegetables. Had a nice conversation with a guy who works in the produce department. We talked about all the different varieties of fruit that comes up from South America. Karina bought these tiny star-shaped fruits called lyche nuts, and I bought some plantain. We ate a mega salad and potatoes and asparagus for supper.

I had a brief nap in the evening and then continued working on my Law Amendments presentation. Judy called to talk about the latest in her life. She wants us to come for a visit this weekend. I’ll have to check my schedule.

Long day tomorrow; rock video and job shadowing. Final prep before the Law Amendments presentation and a brief board meeting thrown in for good measure.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Our summer intern started today. His name is Dean. I had him start on the re-design of the newsletter. I just need to get him content. Garry is his advisor and he was supposed to meet with us today but he never showed. Dean is coming in again tomorrow to continue with the newsletter and to start with the Khyber Kids brochure as well.

A nice surprise today: our new video projector arrived. It looks so snazzy. Didn’t really have time to play with it, though I am curious to see if there will be a noticeable difference between it and the one we have been using as a replacement so far. Susan from Instructor Aids, where we bought it, seems to think there will be.

Karina dragged me off to see Spider-man again. She was at the media centre for most of the afternoon working on some pictures for my mom. We had supper at home then caught a bus back downtown for the movie. I liked it better the second time, I think. In particular I liked the wet smooching scene better. I hadn’t quite appreciated the PG-bondage aspect of the scene, what with

Spidey hanging upside-down, his hands tied so to speak, while MJ unmasks him. I think Karina likes this scene as well, though she told me afterwards that women are often portrayed as the more powerful vixens when it comes to sex. No surprise there.

We had a couple drinks at Gatsbys after the movie while waiting for a bus. Missed one bus because we got caught up watching the Habs blow a 2 goal lead and lose to Carolina in overtime.

I think we are going to go to Saint John for the weekend. Bethany is renting a car and wants to leave tomorrow after work. I need to pack in the morning and spend the day getting the rest of the content for the newsletter finished.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Made it back home early this evening, but was disappointed that the Simpsons was not on TV. A bad, made-for-TV movie called “Dino-topia” was on instead. Worked on the computer most of the night, when Rebecca wasn’t on the phone, which was most of the night.

The rest of our visit with Judy and Robyn was fun. Last night we took Robyn and his friend Justin to the Delta to go swimming. Judy has a health club membership there. Judy, Karina and I drank wine from paper coffee cups at poolside. The bar wouldn’t let us use glasses, for obvious reasons. Had planned to watch AI back at Judy’s apartment but spent the rest of the night talking about sex instead. Judy is our unofficial sex therapist. We have to meet with her at least a few times a year to work out our dysfunctions. We are tentatively planning a trip to Montréal together for later in June.

Yesterday afternoon we bought chocolates and flowers and drove out to the valley and made a surprise visit at my parent’s house. We sat inside and had a nice visit. Mom showed us her new quilts and we drank some of Dad’s beer. I gave her a fuschia. Talked about student loans and student debts. Apparently Trev and Tamara have bought the semi we looked at with them; they are scheduled to move in on June 1.

Spent most of today reading and lazing about the apartment. Judy and Robyn left just past noon to visit her parents for Mother’s Day. He was in a sour mood this morning from lack of sleep. He and Justin had spent all yesterday and most of today wrestling. I guess that is what 11 year-olds do. That and play video games. Life is all competition at that age.

Bethany was a bit later picking us up. The drive home was uneventful. Ate another McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish, this time in Moncton. The decor inside that particular restaurant was bad, but not as garish as Truro.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Had a bland day. Zipped down to work for 10am but it turned out that Dean didn’t even get my emails over the weekend and so he wasn’t there to meet me. In fact, he was still asleep when I called at 11:30. It didn’t matter though; both Craig’s had not completed their articles for the newsletter, and Lucas still needed to finish his. Everything else is done, but it looks like the mail won’t go out until Wednesday at the earliest. Karen came in and updated the membership. I hooked up our new projector. It is nice and user-friendly. Brighter than the replacement model we have been using thus far. Picked up a copy of Lola and was pleasantly surprised to see that Sally had condensed our interview. It made me seem wittier.

Went to the openings at Anna and eyelevel tonight. The Anna was hosting the work for the auction fund-raiser “Anna’s Bash”. It looks bland and conservative; very commercial and I’m certain will appeal to the ‘bloated bourgeoisie”, as Jeff put it. It wasn’t very busy at all. Had a couple glasses of wine the headed to eyelevel for “Friends Forever”. Evan and Greg were serving up grilled cheese sandwiches to the hip sounds of ’80’s Michael Jackson. The walls were stuffed with drawings that were garish coloured scribbles and overscrawls made by Evan and Greg. It was great or awful.

Hung out in the Club for a time afterwards. Karina stopped by after working out at the Y and left to get groceries. I talked to Swintak about New York and the Towers of Light. Talked to Aaron about renting our projector for his show at Anna next week. Talked to Seth about his upcoming show at the Bathroom Gallery and his great invitations. They are printed on toilet paper. He taped the TP to regular paper and ran it through the photocopier at Staples, until they kicked him out. Then he went to Kinkos. Talked to Don about the Critical Art Ensemble. Biked home.

The house is a mess again and full of bodies. Courtney brought another wreck of a bike home. Andrew was drinking beer and Rebecca was eating salad and leaving half of it on the floor and the rest on the counter. I think I may look into getting an apartment for just the two of us, and the cats and the fish. I am getting sick of the clutter.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

It was crazy outside for rain and wind this morning. Caught a bus to work but realized that my rain jacket and my boots are at the office. Luckily there was an extra jacket in the closet. My umbrella appears long-gone as well. They don’t last long with all the wind.

It was a slow day getting the newsletter finished. Craig F. and Lucas finished their columns by mid-afternoon but I didn’t hear from Craig P. until just past five. He had emailed his review at about 3pm but I hadn’t checked for it. Lucky Dean stayed all afternoon putting the finishing touches on the layout, so he finished the whole thing before leaving. If I get it to the printer tomorrow early in the morning and if there are no problems with the file then we might still see the newsletter by tomorrow afternoon.

Had a building complaint from the guy who looks after the theatre school next door. Apparently the busted downspout could lead to flooding in both our basements. What I had thought was a storm drain in the side alley is just a collector. I told him that it would be more effective if he called my building managers to complain. I’ve been nagging them about the busted downspouts for the past year and they haven’t been fixed yet.

Received a phone call from someone at Fuse Magazine regarding the NSAC. They are thinking of looking at the arts funding situation for the next issue. That would be good; I’d like to do more writing about it. We need to keep the pressure on.

Set up telephone banking today to check our account balance and lo-and-behold our Canada Council money is finally here – our operating grant plus the two years of supplementary funds. What a relief. Now I can pay off the pile of bills that has been growing on my desk. Either that or jump ship to Cuba—heh-heh.

Caroline emailed me to let me know that Winnie’s catalogues have been printed and she needs the second installment of money. I need to get those catalogues in order to finish my final report. She said that Erick wants me to make a few minor changes to my intro for his catalogue, but I have been trying to get in touch with him for 2 days. That catalogue needs to be completed ASAP as well. Outstanding projects, grrrrr.

Have a big board meeting tomorrow night. Need to work on an agenda and some reports. Started a budget today.

Karina is trying to get some plans underway for our vacation this June. Her and Judy are at odds about travel. Karina would like to drive to NY and Judy will only fly, but would consider driving to Montréal.

Am going to see if the hockey game is still on. Karina bought a copy of Being John Malkovitch today. We may watch it later on.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

I don’t know how it managed to turn into such a long day. I must not have been paying attention to the time. Here it is after midnight and I even came home from work early to have supper at home.

Spent most of the day completing the mailout. It was great because almost everyone I had called and asked to help actually came in. It is hard to know who to expect after talking only to answering machines. So most of the newsletters were folded today, and the envelopes stuffed and dropped off early in the afternoon.

After work Karina and I went on a little tour of the studios at NSCAD. Dropped off a box of newsletters for the lounge. There isn’t much work happening yet, I guess it is still quite early in the semester. Karina showed me her studio, a quiet little space tucked away on the second floor of the former Girl Guides building. She hasn’t been working on anything yet either.

Came home to make supper and then people started showing up for Rebecca’s Drawing Club. She had invited a lot of people and the kitchen filled up fast, so it moved to the living room. I joined in, this being the first drawing club meeting where I was actually home, and not at work late or at a meeting or somewhere else. Since Robbie wasn’t there I felt a responsibility towards making the more blatantly perverted drawings. Lots of cats were featured. There is lots of laughter at a drawing club. The Drawing Club is working on an exhibition of drawings for a suitcase exhibition in England this summer.

Watched the last few minutes of the hockey game after the drawing club dispersed. Hard to believe that Toronto managed to win. Watched the national after that, then read some news on the web. Brutal review of Attack of the Clones in the Globe and Mail. It’s weird, but I have very little desire to see it, even though I probably will. Then I can more legitimately criticize it.

Bill 109 will most likely pass Third Reading and be voted on tomorrow, wiping the NSAC off the books. Frustrating. There were a few snippets about it in the Coast today, even some quotes from my law amendments presentation, but now we have to gear up for dealing with the new replacement council the best we can. Need to keep involved.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Had a late start to the day this morning. Was up late last night having one of those ‘heart-to-heart’ conversations with Karina that can only seem to occur at 2:30am. I decided around noon today that there was no real need for me to rush to work so we walked downtown after the rain had stopped. Bought some office supplies at Staples along the way. Took a break at Steve-O-renos for tea and coffee. When I finally got to work I checked my day-planner and realized I had missed two meetings, one with Laura from CFAT and one with Leah from Genesis. I’m such a slacker.

Tim came by and I asked him to write about SOS for the upcoming catalogue. He has an extensive knowledge of film and video, and has even seen Rimmer’s Variations on a Cellophane Wrapper. Made plans to rent the projector to Aaron for use in his exhibition opening at the Anna on Monday.

Karina helped scan some slides to send to Arts Atlantic. After work she headed off to the Y. I walked home because I missed the bus. It is muggy out today, but nice because it is not cold, not too windy, not raining and not even too cloudy. I made a salad and some supper tonight but mostly watched TV. That 24-hour Kieffer Sutherland show and then an anniversary M*A*S*H special. It looks like Global will be running M*A*S*H reruns weeknights at 10pm. It seems odd to present a TV sitcom about the Korean war in the midst of this current war on terrorism and evil and the fighting in Afghanistan. Like some sort of make-shift or ready-made comedic outlet for the twisted situation of the world? And what’s with the 5000 troops needed for Kananaskis? I just voted at an on-line site to have the G-8 conference at an alternate location. The majority of respondents want to have it held at 24 Sussex Drive. I’d like to see that!

I’m heading to bed. Even though I hope to have a day off tomorrow, I have to get down to work to finish payroll remit, which I am behind on. We need to buy groceries and wash laundry too, and I’d like to get into the studio if at all possible.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

I feel dirty. Karina and I went to see the latest Star Wars flick; it stank. Some of the action scenes were bearable, but even most of those felt out of place and habitual. Lucas is just going through the motions. He’s like a bad used tire. I don’t know why he didn’t take some of his millions and hire some decent writers. I mean, how hard can it be to craft an interesting screenplay about the genesis of Darth Vader? Only about a million of his fans could do a better job. The only dark lord out there is George himself, lording over us with his techno-gadgets. Lucas, I mean. Well, Bush isn’t a saint, either.

We had supper at I love Sushi and debated getting groceries before the film, but that would have involved too much travel. It has been raining all day. We read some magazines and had sorbetto at Dio Mio instead. We’ve been spending more time together, which is nice. Being a workoholic I forget sometimes how nice it is to relax and read and talk.

Woke up late today and planned to do laundry and get groceries, but had a late breakfast at Mary’s Place instead.  Caught a bus downtown and documented the exhibitions. Took photos of the Ballroom and Closet exhibitions. Used film instead of slides, to better catch the light. We can always shoot slides from the prints. Bought a carrying case for the projector before Aaron came to rent it. The case is intended for a laptop computer but the projector fits in it fine and costs half of what the Epson case does.

Back to Star Wars: Seeing how bad these first 2 installments in the Star Wars monopoly has actually made me appreciate the original trilogy a little more. Maybe it was the fact that actors had to do more work. They actually had work. The stories have a more human component. They are funnier, too. The only laughs in Attack of the Clones is in a. The title, b. the droids and c. the wooden acting. The audience laughed hardest at the painful love scenes. George really should have farmed out the writing.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Had a so-so day. Slept in, while Karina surprisingly woke up early and washed all the laundry. Went to Juliens for bread and bought some other groceries at Toulany’s. Made an omelet for brunch. Spent most of the afternoon housecleaning and discussing our living arrangements with Karina. We are thinking of moving into our own apartment in the fall. Roommates are great at times, but cleaning up after them isn’t. Our current apartment has really become too cramped; there are bikes in the hallway and in the storage closet, there are twenty pairs of shoes at the top of the stairs and general clutter everywhere. The bedrooms in this apartment are tiny, not much larger than our bed. Of course, moving is a great hassle, but if we start looking now we may be able to find something for the fall.

Went to the studio for a little bit this afternoon. Didn’t do much; mostly looked at the paintings I have on the go. Haven’t been in there in a while and it takes time to get back in the swing of things. Made some supper while Karina went to the Y. Watched the hockey game but switched channels to watch the final episode of the X-Files. The whole military trial for Mulder’s life was a compact excuse for a trip down memory lane and a cheesy way to wrap up loose ends. Well, some of them. The Simpsons episodes afterwards weren’t much better. And in between the Leafs lost in overtime. Not that I’m a fan, but at this point in the playoffs they are a good default team to root for. Overall just a bad TV night.

We had been calling Video Difference in search of Episode 4 of Star Wars. Karina had only seen it once or twice before. They didn’t have a copy and neither did Blockbuster; they were all rented. We found one at Rogers and biked there to get it. Karina took one of Courtney’s old bikes. I noticed a couple more in his room when I went in to get a bike tool to tighten the handlebars. He’s got a mini bike repair shop happening in his bedroom.

After watching Star Wars again I realized that it was much better when I was twelve, though the acting is so much more playful and fun to watch than in the recent prequels. My big question is why doesn’t C-3PO remember being on Tatooine? Do the ‘droids get their memory banks cleaned after the Clone Wars? And why do these questions even occupy room in my mind?

I am hoping that having a low-key weekend will have relaxed me enough to get though another week at work. Paul and Jo are coming the end of the week to install the next show and I have a lot of financial stuff to work on, plus the hiring of some summer staff.

Dear Mr. Chretién,

Worked on my green thumb today, but really only succeeded in getting my hands really dirty. After lazing about in bed for most of the morning, and after making breakfast and having tea and trying to decide what to do first, Trevor called and needed to pick up his drill. He and Tamara are busy packing. They move into their new place in just over a week. He picked me up and we drove to the Khyber to get his drill. On the way there he asked if we wanted to go to Lunenburg to visit our grandparents. Karina was too busy, as she is behind in her studio work, but she came anyway. It was a nice sunny day and it was good to get out of the city. Nice day for a drive. Even nicer to play in dirt for awhile; when we got to my grandparents house Poppy immediately put us to work re-planting some climbing roses. Helped do some other yard work as well. Talked about trapping raccoons. Watched the birds, the finches and the pheasants. Drank some beer. Had a barbeque – though I had veggie lasagna, while everyone else ate burgers. Talked about GM foods. Drove by their church on the way home, the one that burned down as a result of a bad Halloween prank. It is currently covered by a huge plastic shell, and looks sort of like a space-age greenhouse, or some sort of Roswell-esque bunker. All the salvaged and potentially re-usable or restorable articles are stacked up on the front lawn in front of the cemetery. It looks very odd. Would have taken a picture but we forgot the camera at home. I keep teasing Karina about carrying around the camera in case there is the potential to make art somewhere, but she says she isn’t a photographer. Maybe I just wish I was. Trev and I talked about Star Wars lore on the drive to and from Lunenburg. Karina read in the back seat. I’m surprised she didn’t get car sick. She finished About a Boy. We’ll probably check out the movie sometime this week or next. I can’t read in a moving car. A bus or train, no problem, but not a car. Something to do with the smell. Came home and watched some of the hockey game and read Adbusters. Still have some work to do on the computer. Want to get to bed early as I have a lot of catching up to do tomorrow.

Bummer of a day for my bike. Woke up early to go to the supermarket to get cat food and my bike had been stolen right from our front porch. The creeps cut right through my lock. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry; this is the third bike to be stolen from our house in the 2.5 years we have lived here. I called the cops but that is about as useful as calling the Prime Minister. Looks like I might be buying Courtney’s old bike.

Bit of a zany day at work. Dismantled the gear from the gallery and Jacob’s dad Peter drove me to Buckley’s and Rentown to return it all. They had rented a U-Haul to move chairs and platforms, as Jacob’s play The Orchard was opening tonight in the Turret. Peter wasn’t used to the wide wheelbase and kept driving on the curb with every right turn. No one was hurt. He dropped me off at Rentown, then I caught a bus down to the bus station, picked up Winnie’s catalogues and took a cab back to the Khyber. It is great

to finally have a major project completed. I was so happy I walked our final report directly to Pat at the Department of Tourism and Culture office. I didn’t run into Rodney but in an odd coincidence when I got to Pat’s office she was just opening her Khyber mail and reading the newsletter while she was scanning one of our recent grant applications. Must be the stars or something.

Andréa has taken it upon herself to re-organize my office. A good thing, too; it was getting out of hand. We need to create more workspace for the additional computer we plan to get in the next week or so. I am worried about where we are going to put all our employees this summer: me and 2 khyber kids employees, plus 2 more in the media centre, and an intern. Yikes! We’ll have to try to do something really ambitious this summer, like build a rocket ship or something. Maybe the Critical Art Ensemble will help.

Went to the openings at Anna. Aaron’s dual channel video rear projection was a coy look at masculine buddies; the footage was of he and Ryan literally climbing the walls of an apartment. Sort of homoerotic when listening to their grunts and groans, but mostly just goofy to watch. There was a visiting faculty show about slides of water and glass, sort of stale, in gallery 2 and a weak painting show in gallery 3.

Went back to the office for a bit and alternately caught up on some PR work and listened to Karina talk about her lack of focus. Talked about her hyper-real dreams. On more that one occasion she has woken up yelling because of some bad thing I did in her dreams. Just the other day she woke me up by pushing me off the bed; it was because she dreamed I was taking a sex class with David and Claire in  tent and wouldn’t invite her. She takes her dreams very seriously. And now she is in a studio slump. We went for coffee at the Med. She headed down to her studio and I spent some time in the Club and talked to Sarah about the upcoming conference in Moncton and the revisions to the bylaws. She was meeting Robbie and Randy later on for drinks. Randy is in town; he is giving a presentation at the conference with Ron. It was nice to see him. He had just come in on the train and stopped at the Khyber first thing. It is becoming a tradition with him.

Went down to the school and met Karina in her studio. Changed some fluorescent lights for her. She caught a bus home and I cycled. Need to go get a bite to eat before going to bed, I skipped supper and the food at the opening was insubstantial.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

It is getting easier to get up early lately, mostly a result of bright sun shining in our bedroom window. Even Karina was up early. She has been wearing earplugs to bed the past few nights as those tiny black beetles have been making appearances. She is worried they will crawl in her ears in her sleep.

I bought a new bike lock and helmet this morning on the way to work. Ran into Mohanad on Quinpool Road and we biked to Steve-O-Renos and had coffee and sat outside in the sun talking about the futility of politics and ‘the system’.

Finished another final report today for the old NSAC catalogues. Now I just have to plan a big mailout of them all. Caroline had mailed a mock-up of the catalogue for Erick’s show, which I used in the final report. The actual catalogue is still undergoing revisions and probably won’t be finished for another few weeks. It feels good to have the projects officially completed.

Had a meeting after work to discuss equipment purchases and other uses for the supplementary funding. Had four beer for supper. Afterwards Sarah, Spencer, Emily and I talked about art and programming and board structure and movies. Karina called me at the Club and wanted to meet me for a movie. She wanted to go on a ‘date’.  We went to see About A Boy. It started off promising and even had some momentum going but ran out of steam. It had an awful soundtrack. I don’t understand why they ditched the Nirvana storyline. But Hugh Grant wasn’t as bad as I thought he would be.

Jo and Paul are scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Lots to do.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Another sunny morning. Had a big breakfast and cycled to work. Made plans to find a place to stay for Sarah in Moncton for the conference. My old girlfriend from my first year of arts school, Kimberly, is one of the options. I got her number from Jamie. His mom goes to Kimberly occasionally. She is a masseuse.

Drew dropped his paintings off. They look great. Blurry close-ups of famous paintings from the art history canon; Goya, Michelangelo, Botticelli and more, the surfaces all scoured with sandpaper. The paintings are all on TV-Sized and shaped panels. Early in the afternoon Jo Cook arrived with her partner Walter. They unpacked her crate. Her work looks much better in real life than it did in her slides. Great digital prints of egg sculpture and rock drawings. It is going to be a good show. Paul hasn’t shown up yet but I’m sure he will tomorrow.

Stayed at the office until close to 8pm. Talked to Lucas and Andréa about programming and hiring. Talked to Emily on the phone, but didn’t get a chance to meet up with her. She is driving up from Connecticut to retrieve some of her bookworks and some work for a show she is curating called Canada Darling. She is bringing back Peter Flemming’s big canoe piece. She didn’t have time or room to bring her G-3 so she is going to mail it to us instead.

Biked to Canadian Tire to pick up a hex key set so I can dismantle the monitor arm Jason left attached to the wall at the Khyber. We are going to use it in the next exhibition. Picked up Empire Strikes Back at Video Difference on my way home.

Made supper and sat and talked with Rebecca and Andrew until Karina came home. She had been at the Y all night. We watched the movie and ate chips.

Courtney wants $75 for the bicycle I am currently borrowing from him. I’m considering it. Karina likes it. We could buy it and then eventually I’ll get that antique bike from Judy for me and Karina can use Courtney’s.

Courtney has a new show in his Wallet Gallery; selected drawings from the Drawing Club. Apparently there was an opening at our house this afternoon for it but nobody came because nobody knew about it except Rebecca, and she was working.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Surprise surprise, sun again today. Swept and mopped the gallery before it got busy. Jo and her partner Wes finished installing her work. He is a carpenter and former preparator and so the installation was a snap. There was no sign of Paul until late in the afternoon. I was getting worried about him. He is coming in tomorrow to install his viewing booth. Drew is going to come tomorrow and attempt to remove his large cocoon. He will have to use wire snips on a stick, as we don’t have access to a twenty-four foot ladder. Finished lighting Jo’s work. Jo and Wes are going to spend the rest of the weekend sight-seeing.

Set up on-line banking for the Khyber. That was a bit of an adventure. Made an appointment with our account manager to change one of our signing officers and discuss GIC’s. things I never, ever thought I would be doing.

Had supper with Rebecca and Lucas at the Med. Karina joined us later, after she had finished working out. After supper we went to Jacob’s play, The Orchard.  It felt long. No intermission. Uncomfortable chairs. It was hard to distinguish between  the characters, as five actors alternately filled ten roles with little more than subtle costume changes and mannerisms. But watching the night fall through the windows as lamps were clicked on during the performance was magical. The actors used the space well.  Their rendition of Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time dance routine was thrilling. I don’t know much about Chekov, but I didn’t expect it to be this much fun.

Debated staying afterwards for the Brothers Creegan, but ended up cycling home. I didn’t have enough money for the cover anyway, though I did feel like staying out for a bit and having a drink or two. Craig seemed nervous about the attendance for the show. He says he put his nuts out on it. The Brothers aren’t cheap.

Watched the last fifteen minutes of some Law and Order-type show and then the National. Have a few email notices to send out. I don’t think Instant Coffee listed our upcoming openings.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Sorry I didn’t write last night. We watched Return of the Jedi to complete the trilogy, then watched the end of The Big Lebowski on CBC. It was late when we went to bed. I was disappointed with Jedi. I remembered it being more exciting the first couple times I watched it, many years ago. I must have hit a Star Wars saturation point.

I was also in pain last night. I had fallen off Courtney’s bike yesterday just after leaving Peter’s house, where I borrowed the Jedi video. I flipped right over the handlebars while checking the front brake. It is a really touchy brake. I thought I had broken my wrist at first, but it was only bruised. Had to keep some hot compresses on it to relieve the ache.

We spent almost all of today cleaning the apartment, even the big closets. There is now stuff everywhere. You should see all the crap on our back deck. Good thing garbage pick-up is on Tuesday. We are having a pot luck tomorrow night for the visiting artists. Originally it was just going to be members of the board and the visiting artists but I have since invited more people. It may well turn into more of a party. Have to figure out what to make, and get groceries tomorrow.

Karina and I are in the middle of having a heart-to-heart conversation. I’d better go.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

The pot luck went well, with one exception. I forgot to invite Drew, one of the artists in the show. How foolish of me. But everyone else that I invited came, except the 2 Days. It is just winding down right now, an impromptu Drawing Club has taken over. Jo really wants to see Courtney’s Wallet Gallery as she is familiar with the wallet gallery on the west coast and another one she mentioned from New Zealand (I think).

This morning I was up early to meet Spencer at the Khyber before going to the bank but he was running late so I met him there. We had to go over signing authority documents which weren’t actually at the bank, they were on their way from Montréal. We talked about GIC’s with Heather, out account manager. Afterwards we went for coffee at C’est Ci Bon, and talked about how difficult it has become to get a decent apartment in Halifax.

For the afternoon Karina and I discussed recipes and went grocery shopping at Sobeys. We had a good talk in the morning. Last night she read some notes I had written years ago that were upsetting to her. I think things are smoothed over a bit now. Anyway we made sweet potato with sesame seeds and a great big bowl of soup, a tomato/potato/chick peas/spinach thing. Then I went to the openings at Anna and Karina went to the Y to work out.

The openings were bland. Some competent paintings in gallery one about young gay male love, sort of quasi-Calvin Klein imagery, and the same show in gallery 2 and ceramics in gallery 3. Pots. Biked to the liquor store and met up with Andrew on the way.

So, like I said the Pot Luck went well. Jo and Wesley showed up first and we had great conversations all night, she and Wes are funny and full of life. Leslie and Andréa and Jacob and even Heather and Karen and of course Spencer and Sarah and Lucas and Peter and Andrew and for a little while Mohanad was here, and Paul and Christina. But not Drew, poor guy. He did take down his cocoon yesterday, I noticed today. And the Drawing Club took over later in the evening and I drew dirty pictures on everything, from Butt-Monkeys to Stains. Drawing can be fun, I forget that sometimes.

Anyway, I am going to go bring Courtney’s bike inside and help with the dishes before going to bed.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

It was a bit of a late night after the openings. Stayed in the Club until almost midnight. Jo is a bit of a dynamo, and is really keen about talking about art. It was nice to talk about my own projects as well. It was funny to hear that Paul has made some Voice of Fire-inspired work as well. The ‘Open Mic’ was taken over by a ‘band’ from the South Shore circuit, a bad blend of 80’s pop with a splash of Janis Joplin. Dusty is on tour so there was a replacement host. No comparison. Attendance at the Club seems a bit down lately. Have to talk with Craig about it, try to get the renovations back on track. Walked home with Sarah. She had all sorts of interesting stories about the conference she attended in Moncton last weekend.

The fire alarm went off after the opening last night, while the performance of the Orchard was still happening. Luckily we know what key opens the panel and were able to shut it off fairly quickly. There was no fire as far as any of us could tell. The firemen still came to check over the building and they couldn’t find a fire either. Jo’s partner Wes is an electrician and he said he has replaced systems before because they become dirty and start going off all the time. I hope that isn’t the case here; the alarm is really, really loud. Will look into getting the system serviced.

The opening went well last night. There seemed to be a good crowd, a lot of people I didn’t recognize. Jacob had a good turnout for the play, it was ‘pay what you can’ night.

Am heading into work early this morning to meet the electrician to adjust the wiring so Shana can set up her second kiln. It will give me the opportunity to really organize my office space and prepare for the interviews tomorrow and Friday. Have a lunchtime meeting at Dal for the upcoming curatorial conference, then am going to help Trevor with his move this afternoon.

Dear Mr. Chrétien,

Thanks for writing back, it has been awhile. It is always nice to hear from you.

Had a full day yesterday, with the interviews and brochure planning and meetings and gallery adjustments. I think the fire alarm was triggered the other night by Riikka’s exhibition in the Closet Gallery. Her speakers are really close to the sensor. Wes told me before he and Jo left that paint fumes can actually set the sensors off, so maybe it was that. Whatever it was, it hasn’t happened again and the show was on for over 10 hours yesterday.

The interviews went well, considering that Andréa, Lucas and myself have very little experience conducting them. I found it a little tricky interviewing people that we know, like Eleanor and Jeremy. I am looking forward to more today. Hopefully we will find people who fit both jobs by the weekend.

We had a programming committee meeting yesterday evening, which was great fun. One of the few times we get to talk almost exclusively about art. We also talked about the office situation for the summer. The Refugee clinic moved out of their office yesterday so now the room is available and I think we should move our office into it. It will be large enough for the summer staff and volunteers and plus gives us access to the street; Lucas and I have already constructed some signage templates for the windows in the side spire and experimented with lighting it from behind. While looking at our back-lit sign from the sidewalk we also watched some of the actors in The Orchard performing in the windows of the Turret. Talked to Michael Fernandes, who is exhibiting work in the eyelevel gallery windows. He is sleeping on buses, riding them to the end of the line and back, with a sleeping bag. He has 2 signs in the windows. One reads “miss the job” and the other “sleep on the bus”.

Went to a movie with Karina last night, after she finished working out at the Y. She was there for over 4 hours. We watched Insomnia. I liked it, though it felt a bit like a ‘made for TV’ movie at times. Went back to the Club afterwards to pay my tab (1 Guinness) and watched Dean’s band play a few songs. They desperately needed a sound tech. Dusty is still on tour. Stayed up late with Karina last night; the roommates are away.

I must run, am  having breakfast with Karina before work.
